| Begin a separate list at 1 | Restart at 1 |
| Continue a sequence in a later, separated section | Numbering to continue, or enter the intended next number |

Correct one wrong number
- Double-click the list numbers to select them.
- Right-click the number that needs correction.
- Choose Set Numbering Value.
- Enter the intended value in the dialog.
This changes the number through Word’s list controls. Microsoft Support cautions against manually typing over a displayed list number: “If Word loses track of what you’ve done, problems can pop up when you want to make other list changes later.” Microsoft’s numbered-list guidance explains the supported correction method.
Restart a list at 1
- Double-click the list numbers.
- Right-click the first number where the new sequence should begin.
- Choose Restart at 1.
Use this when the later items are intended to be a separate list, not a continuation of the earlier sequence.
Continue numbering across a break
If two sections belong to one sequence, select the later list and choose Numbering to continue automatically, or enter the intended next number. If the later section should begin a separate sequence, use Restart at 1 instead. The choice depends on the document’s intended structure. See Microsoft’s instructions for continuing list numbering.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix an item at the wrong list level
When an item is incorrectly nested or appears at the wrong outline level, select its number or text. Open the arrow next to Bullets or Numbering, choose Change List Level, then select the appropriate level. Microsoft documents a simpler keyboard method in Word for the web: press Tab to indent a subtopic and Shift+Tab to return it to the main level. See Microsoft’s list-level guidance.
Repair numbered headings or a custom multilevel list
For numbered headings
Apply Word’s built-in Heading styles, then choose a multilevel-list template. This ties numbering to the document’s heading hierarchy—for example, top-level headings numbered 1, 2, 3 and second-level headings numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3—rather than treating each heading as an unrelated list item. Microsoft recommends this method for numbered headings: number headings with a multilevel-list template.

For custom multilevel numbering in Word for Windows
Open Home > Paragraph > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List. Select the level to configure, link levels to styles as needed, set the starting number, and specify whether a level restarts after another level. Microsoft’s steps are for desktop Word on Windows: define a new multilevel list.
Word for the web supports standard list formatting, but Microsoft says advanced list customization requires the desktop app. If the web interface does not expose the control you need, open the document in desktop Word.

Stop Word from turning typed numbers into a list
To prevent automatic list recognition as you type in Word for Windows, open File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type, then clear Automatic numbered lists. This changes future typing behavior; it does not repair a numbering sequence already in the document. See Microsoft’s instructions for turning automatic lists on or off.
