HyperHDR can synchronize addressable LEDs with video, but it is software—not a complete lighting kit. You also need compatible LEDs, a controller and power supply, plus a way to capture the video: a USB capture device for many external HDMI sources or supported software capture for some computer displays. The right combination depends on your source, host, HDR chain and strip protocol.
How a HyperHDR setup works
HyperHDR analyzes video and controls lighting based on the image. A typical arrangement sends video from a source to a display while a capture path provides the image to HyperHDR; the software then sends lighting data through a compatible controller to LEDs around the display. The project describes support for Windows, macOS and Linux on x86 and ARM, with USB video capture on listed desktop platforms and hardware-accelerated or direct software screen capture on some systems. See the HyperHDR project README for current platform and feature details.
For an external source such as a streaming device or console, you will generally need a USB HDMI capture device that works with your host and the video format you want. If the source is the computer running HyperHDR, software capture may avoid a separate grabber where supported. Neither route guarantees that every resolution, refresh rate, pixel format or HDR configuration will work; check the full source-to-capture-to-host chain before choosing hardware.
Choose the video input and host
| Choice | Best suited to | Check before buying or installing |
|---|---|---|
| USB video capture | External HDMI sources whose picture should drive the lights | Host operating system support, capture format, resolution, refresh rate, HDR handling and the complete HDMI path. HyperHDR’s README describes USB grabber support, but not universal device compatibility. |
| Software screen capture | A computer display captured by a supported software method | Whether the capture method is supported on your OS and hardware, and whether it captures the content you want. This may eliminate a USB grabber for PC content, but does not capture an unrelated external source. |
| Desktop host | Windows, macOS or Linux x86/ARM systems | Platform-specific capture support and enough compute capacity for the selected capture format and video settings. |
| Raspberry Pi-class host | A compact embedded installation using a supported OS and capture route | Installation image or package availability, compute capacity and the controller guidance for your LED protocol. Do not assume the Pi should directly drive the strip. |
HyperHDR lists SDR and HDR processing, and Dolby Vision support is specifically qualified as Low Latency Dolby Vision (LLDV) when the hardware supports it. That is a project-stated capability, not assurance that a particular source, capture device, operating system and metadata path will preserve HDR correctly.

Addressable strip
The project README lists WS281x, APA102, HD107, SK9822 and SK6812 strip families. These are not interchangeable in every build: choose a strip and controller combination whose protocol is documented as compatible. Also match the strip’s voltage, RGB or RGBW type, density and length to the physical layout and power plan. The documentation does not identify one universally best strip.
Controller and signal level
Project materials name HyperSPI for ESP8266, ESP32 and RP2040; HyperSerial variants for ESP8266, ESP32 and Pico; and Hyperk for supported ESP variants and Pico W families. Confirm firmware and transport compatibility for the exact controller before wiring.

For Raspberry Pi installations using WS281x or SK6812, the official FAQ advises against treating direct Pi output as the standard supported approach. It recommends an external ESP8266/ESP32 or Pico/RP2040 controller; in the Pico/RP2040 context, it suggests a built-in or external 3.3V-to-5V level shifter. Verify the electrical requirements of the particular controller and strip. Read the HyperHDR FAQ before connecting hardware.
Power supply
Use a supply rated for the exact strip and the length you intend to install, following the strip manufacturer’s electrical guidance. There is no universal power-supply rating for a HyperHDR build: it depends on the selected LEDs and installation. Do not size it from the software name or an unrelated example.

Optional network lights
HyperHDR can also be extended beyond a strip. The official walkthrough demonstrates a Philips Hue setup as a separate lighting instance alongside an SK6812 TV strip. In that example, Hue requires an Entertainment group and successful bridge and network discovery. Treat this as an optional expansion with its own network and bridge dependencies, rather than a substitute for checking strip compatibility.
Install HyperHDR and configure the capture path
Installation routes described by the project include Windows installers, Debian/Ubuntu packages and a custom Raspberry Pi OS image. The installation guide’s version status can change; check its current instructions rather than assuming a package or image corresponds to a particular release. See HyperHDR installation instructions.

- Choose a supported host and install HyperHDR. Use the installation route for your operating system and confirm that the current instructions apply to your intended platform.
- Connect the video source and capture device, if needed. For external HDMI content, verify that the capture hardware is visible to the host and supports your intended format. For computer content, use a software capture route only where supported.
- Check the preview before configuring LEDs. Confirm that HyperHDR receives the intended picture. If capture fails, troubleshoot device recognition, format and host support first; lighting adjustments cannot fix a missing video feed.
- Set capture format and video options. Resolution, refresh rate and pixel format affect the capture path. An older official walkthrough also calls out frame skipping, MJPEG CPU use and YUV USB bandwidth as considerations; exact controls and behavior may differ in current versions.
- Address HDR appearance if necessary. If HDR capture looks washed out, the official example uses tone mapping. Treat the result as dependent on capture hardware and metadata handling, and validate the picture with your own source and display.
Map the LEDs and tune the image response
Once video capture works, configure the LED hardware and map the physical strip layout so the software’s zones correspond to the display edges. The number and placement of LEDs, corners and direction of travel all matter: a geometry mismatch can make colors appear on the wrong side even when capture and control are functioning.
Then tune smoothing and color calibration. Smoothing affects how quickly lighting changes; calibration adjusts the relationship between sampled image colors and LED output. Make adjustments against the actual display and room rather than expecting one universal setting. The official HyperHDR setup walkthrough illustrates the sequence, but dates from 2021, so its interface labels and version-specific capabilities may not match a current installation.

Troubleshoot by isolating each stage
- No video preview: Confirm the capture device or software capture route is supported and detected, then check the selected device and format.
- Video works but LEDs do not: Check the strip protocol, controller firmware and configured connection, then verify wiring and the strip’s power requirements.
- Wrong colors or misplaced effects: Recheck LED order and geometry, then adjust color calibration.
- Choppy or delayed lighting: Review capture resolution, refresh rate and format. On USB capture, bandwidth and CPU load can matter; the older walkthrough specifically notes YUV USB bandwidth and MJPEG processing.
- Washed-out HDR: Check capture-device HDR and metadata behavior, then test tone mapping rather than assuming the source’s HDR signal is being passed through intact.
HyperHDR also describes integrations including MQTT, Home Assistant and zigbee2mqtt. These can extend automation, but they do not remove the need to establish a working video feed and compatible LED-control path first.
