Its three modes—nvidia, integrated and hybrid—trade sustained NVIDIA use against lower power use or on-demand access. Whether it works well on a particular laptop depends on its GPU wiring, firmware, Linux distribution, drivers and display session; switching can also interrupt your session, and the project warns that integrated-mode switching can be unstable.
What optimus-manager does
On supported systems, optimus-manager changes how the integrated and NVIDIA GPUs are used. The project describes dynamically writing X configuration and loading the appropriate kernel modules to turn GPUs on or off. It is not a universal graphics switch for every laptop: firmware behavior, display wiring, drivers, distribution and desktop session all affect the result. See the official repository and project wiki.
Choose a mode around your priority: NVIDIA performance for a sustained graphics workload, lower power use with the NVIDIA GPU off, or integrated graphics for the desktop with NVIDIA available for selected applications. The project does not provide a benchmark that quantifies the performance or battery-life difference.

These are operating choices, not guarantees that every display or application will behave identically. NVIDIA’s driver documentation explains that on muxless laptops the integrated GPU may drive the internal panel while NVIDIA renders work offscreen; PRIME render offload and CUDA can still be useful in that arrangement. What to expect when switching
Switching is not necessarily seamless. In the project configuration, auto_logout=yes causes a switch to log out and close applications. If automatic logout is disabled or unsupported, the new mode takes effect at the next login instead. Save open work before switching, and check the official configuration file and FAQ and troubleshooting guide for the configuration appropriate to your setup.
The repository’s warning is specific and important: “Switching to and from "integrated" mode can be unstable.” If you are experimenting with a custom configuration, keep a recovery route available. A broken graphical setup may require reverting the change from a TTY or a live USB.

Check laptop and software compatibility first
Distribution and installation
The current repository’s installation guidance is Arch-oriented: it directs users to install kernel headers matching a nonstandard kernel, install the appropriate NVIDIA package and install optimus-manager using an AUR package. Those instructions are not general Linux installation steps. The project’s FAQ says the utility is unnecessary on Ubuntu-based distributions because Canonical provides nvidia-prime, which the project says it borrows from. Use your distribution’s current graphics documentation rather than applying Arch instructions elsewhere.
Xorg, Wayland and display manager
The project documents Xorg and Wayland, as well as SDDM, LightDM, GDM, custom display managers and systems without a display manager. Its documented Wayland behavior is automatic rather than configurable through optimus-manager: NVIDIA is allocated to high-performance GLX/Vulkan applications and integrated graphics to EGL desktop applications. The exact result also depends on the driver and application; some Vulkan or EGL GPU selection is handled by the application.

Internal screens and external ports
On a muxless laptop, the integrated GPU can remain responsible for driving the internal panel even when NVIDIA renders an application. External display connectors may be wired differently from the internal screen, and wiring varies by laptop model. Do not assume that switching to NVIDIA will activate every internal or external display.
Firmware and model-specific stability
The project FAQ describes ACPI problems that can cause lockups. Laptop manufacturers implement these controls differently, so possible kernel parameters or configuration adjustments are model-specific rather than universal fixes. NVIDIA’s caution also needs to be read narrowly: its driver guide says external software written to force the NVIDIA GPU to remain on is strongly discouraged. That warning is about always-on forcing; it does not establish that every optimus-manager mode or use is unsupported. See the NVIDIA Optimus and multi-GPU guide.

Troubleshoot by collecting the right details
Before looking for a fix, record the configuration details that distinguish one Optimus problem from another:
- Linux distribution and version, kernel version and NVIDIA driver version.
- Laptop manufacturer and exact model.
- Current optimus-manager mode and any custom configuration.
- Whether the session uses Xorg or Wayland, and which display manager is running.
- Whether the affected screen is the built-in panel or an external display, and which port is in use.
- The application involved and, if known, whether it uses OpenGL, Vulkan, EGL or CUDA.
Then compare the symptoms with the official FAQ and your distribution’s current graphics guidance. The project documents several distinct failure patterns:

- Lockups: ACPI behavior is a recurring, manufacturer-specific cause; a fix for one laptop may not apply to another.
- Unexpected hangs while NVIDIA is off: software probing PCI devices can cause lockups when the discrete GPU is powered down.
- Vulkan or other application uses the wrong GPU: GPU choice can depend on the driver, graphics API and application’s own selection behavior.
- No picture on a screen: internal-panel and external-port wiring can differ, especially on muxless systems.
- Logout behavior differs from expectations: automatic logout depends on the
auto_logoutsetting and support in the display-manager setup.
There is no single compatibility promise or universal remedy: verify advice against the exact laptop, kernel, driver and session before changing firmware- or kernel-level settings.
