To share MP3s as a podcast, use a PHP application to publish a public RSS feed whose episode entries link to your audio files. A lightweight option such as dir2cast builds a feed from a directory of tagged media; EasyPodcast is a fuller self-hosted publishing system with an administration panel. Either way, you still manage the server, accessible audio, updates, and backups.

How a PHP podcast script shares MP3s

A podcast is not just a web page with downloadable recordings. Podcast apps read an RSS feed, which describes the show and lists each episode with an enclosure pointing to its audio file. The feed and the audio must both be publicly reachable for listeners and podcast directories to use them.

Apple says RSS feeds can be self-generated and hosted or issued through a hosting provider. A self-hosted PHP script is one way to generate and serve that feed from your own web server.

Choose a directory script or a publishing application

Option How it works Documented requirements and trade-offs
dir2cast Generates a podcast feed from a directory of media. Its documentation says it can use ID3v2 metadata, including artist and title, and embedded cover art; it supports MP3, MP4, M4A, and M4B and caches the generated feed. The project README documents PHP 5.4 minimum, the XML extension, and testing up to PHP 8. It requires uploading the script, configuration, and getID3 files. These are project-stated requirements, not independent compatibility test results.
EasyPodcast A self-hosted PHP and SQLite application with a public site, RSS feed, administration panel, and additional publishing-management features. The project documents PHP 8+, Apache with mod_rewrite, SQLite, and PHP extensions including fileinfo, xmlwriter, zip, GD, and cURL. Its documentation describes browser-based installation or Docker deployment.

Choose dir2cast if your workflow is primarily adding correctly tagged files to a directory and letting the script generate the feed. Choose EasyPodcast if you want an application with a management interface and broader publishing features. Neither project’s documentation establishes a neutral performance comparison, so there is no evidence-based speed ranking.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Requirements and releases can change. Check each project’s current documentation before installing; EasyPodcast’s official site listed version 2.0.2 when reviewed on October 4, 2026. See EasyPodcast’s official site for its deployment and backup notes.

What the RSS feed must contain

For Apple Podcasts compatibility, Apple’s current feed requirements specify a publicly accessible RSS 2.0 feed and describe technical details a generator must get right. Other directories may have their own validation rules, so a valid feed does not guarantee acceptance everywhere.

  • One item per episode: Each published recording needs an RSS item with a title and an enclosure.
  • Accurate enclosure details: The enclosure must identify the audio URL, file length in bytes, and media type. For an MP3, the media type is typically audio/mpeg. The Podcast Standards Project specification and Apple’s RSS requirements document these fields.
  • Stable episode identity: Give every episode a globally unique GUID and do not change it after publication. Changing an existing GUID can make a podcast app treat an episode as a different recording.
  • Valid XML and dates: RSS element names are case-sensitive. Apple specifies RFC 2822 date and time formatting for relevant dates.
  • Useful metadata: Add clear show and episode information. Apple says episodes must include title and enclosure tags and recommends additional metadata such as episode type, number, and release date. See Apple’s episode guidance.

Apple also requires hosting that supports HTTP HEAD requests and byte-range requests, so clients can inspect and stream the audio correctly. Keep file URLs stable; moving or renaming an MP3 after publishing can break the enclosure link.

Set up and publish safely

  1. Check the server first. Confirm that your hosting environment meets the selected project’s documented PHP, web-server, database, and extension requirements. Do not assume an older project’s stated PHP support proves compatibility with every newer PHP release.
  2. Install the application and configure its media location. Follow the selected project’s current installation instructions. For a directory-based setup, confirm that the script can read the media directory and that the resulting file URLs are reachable from outside your server.
  3. Prepare each recording. Use descriptive filenames and complete metadata. For dir2cast, the project says ID3v2 data can supply episode details and embedded cover art. Upload files completely before allowing them to appear in the feed; dir2cast documents waiting for a media file to age before including it during cache regeneration.
  4. Publish a stable feed URL. Make the RSS feed accessible without a password if you are targeting Apple’s stated requirements. Keep the public feed address consistent when possible.
  5. Validate the deployed feed and audio. Use an RSS feed validator and check the feed in the podcast apps or directories you intend to reach. Verify enclosure URLs, file sizes, media types, GUID stability, and streaming behavior. This is a practical deployment check, not a claim that either project was tested here.
  6. Back up before changes. Preserve the media, database if used, feed configuration, and artwork before upgrades or migrations. EasyPodcast specifically recommends backing up before updates.

Plan for storage, traffic, and maintenance

Self-hosting means your chosen server stores and serves the application and media. Audio files use storage, and each listener’s playback uses server traffic; the limits depend on the server or hosting plan you select. EasyPodcast states that its audio and database remain on the selected server and that hosting limits govern storage and traffic.
