Depending on the method, it samples geometry at multiple points, filters the rendered image, or combines information across frames. It does not simply increase resolution, and each approach trades edge smoothness against sharpness, motion stability, and performance in a different way.
Why game images look jagged or unstable
A game renders a continuous-looking 3D scene onto a grid of pixels. When a thin edge or small detail falls between pixels, the grid cannot represent it perfectly. The result can be a stair-stepped silhouette, flickering detail as the camera moves, or other aliasing artifacts. Anti-aliasing reduces some of these effects by using extra sampling or filtering to create a smoother-looking image.
The artifact and the method matter: smoothing a polygon outline is not the same problem as stabilizing distant foliage or a fine fence pattern. Microsoft describes MSAA specifically as a way to reduce geometric aliasing, not every kind of aliasing: Microsoft Direct3D documentation.
What the main anti-aliasing options do

MSAA: smoother geometry, not a universal cleanup
MSAA samples coverage and depth at several locations within a pixel, which can make polygon boundaries look less stair-stepped. Its scope is limited: it does not necessarily smooth texture or shader aliasing, and transparent textures such as fences can still look jagged. AMD discusses that limitation in its anti-aliasing guidance. More samples are not a guarantee of a whole-image fix.

FXAA and SMAA: filtering the finished image
These screen-space techniques operate on the rendered image rather than relying only on geometric coverage. Filtering can be a relatively inexpensive way to reduce visible jaggedness, but it may soften fine detail as well. The balance depends on the game’s implementation. NVIDIA’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider graphics guide compares that game’s own modes; its descriptions should not be treated as a universal ranking for other games.
TAA: using more than one frame
Temporal anti-aliasing uses information across frames, helping address unstable subpixel detail and flicker that a single-frame filter may miss. Because it relies on motion and frame-history information, the reconstruction can sometimes look soft or leave ghosting behind moving objects. NVIDIA’s adaptive temporal anti-aliasing research describes blur and ghosting as problems its method seeks to address; artifacts vary by implementation.

DLAA versus DLSS Super Resolution
NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as reconstructing a higher-quality output from lower-resolution images using motion data and feedback from previous frames, with performance improvement as a goal. DLAA uses related AI technology for anti-aliasing at native resolution. In practical terms, DLAA prioritizes smoothing at the display resolution, while DLSS Super Resolution also uses a lower internal rendering resolution to pursue higher performance. These options are specific to supported games and hardware, not generic labels for every temporal technique. See NVIDIA’s DLSS overview for the product descriptions.
How to choose a setting in your game
There is no single best AA option for every game or PC. Start with the game’s recommended or default mode, then compare alternatives in a repeatable scene. Look beyond a still screenshot: temporal methods can behave differently once the camera or objects move.

- Pick a consistent scene. Find wires, railings, silhouettes, foliage, hair, or distant detail that makes the current image problem easy to see.
- Compare one option at a time. Keep other graphics settings unchanged so you can tell what the AA choice changed.
- Check both stillness and motion. Look at edges and fine texture while stationary, then pan the camera or move through the scene to spot shimmer, ghosting, or softness.
- Check performance on your own PC. Compare the game’s frame-rate behavior with each option; the cost depends on the engine, resolution, hardware, technique, and scene.
- Check how upscaling interacts with AA. If an upscaler is enabled, see whether it supplies reconstruction or changes separate AA controls. Names and interactions vary by title, so use that game’s settings and documentation.
Keep the option that best balances the specific image defects you notice with clarity and performance. If an image looks too soft, too jagged, unstable in motion, or costly to run, use that symptom to guide the next comparison.

AA can add execution or memory cost, but there is no reliable universal FPS penalty. The impact varies with the method, sample count, engine, resolution, hardware, and scene. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation explains that MSAA sample count and supersampling affect execution cost. Game-guide measurements, such as those in NVIDIA’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider guide, apply to their stated game and test setup rather than serving as current benchmarks for other systems.
