Grml is a Debian-based live system for command-line work, system administration, deployment, and computer rescue. You boot it from USB, CD/DVD, or a network rather than installing Grml to a hard disk. The current stable release, as of October 4, 2026, is Grml 2026.09, with images for 64-bit x86 (amd64) and 64-bit ARM (arm64).

What is Grml?

Grml is a bootable Linux environment aimed particularly at system administrators and people who rely on text-based tools. It includes software for installation, deployment, and rescue tasks, and uses Debian as its base. The project describes Zsh as its default interactive shell and provides a customized grml-zshrc configuration. See the Grml features page for an overview of its software and tools.

Grml runs from boot media; it is not itself a hard-disk installation product. If you want to install plain Debian from a Grml environment, the project points to grml-debootstrap or Debian Installer. Grml also provides tools for related tasks: grml2usb creates USB boot media, grml-terminalserver supports PXE/network boot, grml-hwinfo gathers hardware information, and grml-crypt wraps cryptsetup and related commands. The documentation index covers these utilities and live-system configuration.

Which Grml image should you download?

Choose the architecture that matches the computer you will boot, then choose full or small according to the included software you need. The Grml 2026.09 download page offers both variants for amd64 and arm64; it lists approximate image sizes, not required USB capacities.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Variant Approximate ISO size What differs
Full 1.1 GB, according to the Grml download page for 2026.09 Includes more software; it is the larger image.
Small 640 MB, according to the Grml download page for 2026.09 Reduced software set; omits packages including X.org. It uses the same kernel image as full and is binary compatible with it.

Use the official download page to select the current image. “Small” does not mean a different architecture or kernel. The project recommends it when minimizing image size matters.

What are the requirements for running Grml?

The Grml FAQ lists these minimums:

  • A 64-bit x86 processor (Intel Prescott or later, or AMD K8 or later, operating in 64-bit mode), or a 64-bit ARM v8 CPU.
  • At least 1 GB of RAM; more is preferable.
  • A way to boot the system: USB-capable hardware, a CD/DVD drive, or network hardware usable for PXE boot.

Current Grml images are amd64 and arm64. The project says its 32-bit x86 grml32 and grml96 flavours have ended; the last grml32 images were from 2024.02. A 32-bit computer therefore cannot use a current Grml image. Requirements and architecture details are in the official FAQ.

How do you boot Grml from a USB stick?

For most users, USB is the straightforward route. Use a USB stick with enough free capacity for the image you chose. Writing the ISO erases existing data on the selected device, so use an empty stick and verify the target device carefully.

  1. Download the image. Select the 2026.09 full or small ISO for amd64 or arm64 from the Grml download page.
  2. Verify the download. The project publishes SHA256SUMS-2026.09 and a detached GPG signature. Following the project’s directions, verify the signature on the checksum file, then check the downloaded release files with sha256sum --ignore-missing -c SHA256SUMS-2026.09. Consult the download page for the signature-verification command and key details.
  3. Write the ISO to the USB stick. The official page provides a dd example and warns that the chosen USB device’s existing contents will be overwritten. Alternatively, use grml2usb; for Grml 2026.09, use version 0.20.14 or newer. Follow the current official instructions and take care to identify the correct target device before writing.
  4. Boot from the stick. Restart the computer and choose the USB device in its boot menu or firmware settings. The exact key and menu wording depend on the computer.

USB drive capacity is not prescribed by Grml: compare the selected ISO’s approximate size with the stick’s available capacity. The download page’s USB instructions include the project’s current commands and cautions.

What other boot methods are available?

Boot route When it fits What to know
USB The common choice when the computer can boot from USB. Writing the image overwrites the selected device; current release instructions specify grml2usb 0.20.14 or newer.
CD/DVD When the computer has an optical drive and USB boot is unavailable or inconvenient. The FAQ lists an optical drive as a supported boot route.
PXE/network When booting over a network is suitable for the hardware and setup. grml-terminalserver supports network boot. If the network card cannot PXE boot by itself, the FAQ describes iPXE or a supplied GRUB image as options.

The FAQ and documentation index provide further details about booting, live configuration, and persistence.

What should you know before using Grml for rescue?

LVM and software RAID are not activated by default

Grml does not start LVM or software RAID automatically because the project says doing so could risk data damage. If a rescue task needs either, consult the FAQ for the documented commands or boot options and activate it deliberately rather than assuming the volumes or arrays are already available.

XFS v4 has a kernel compatibility limitation

The Grml FAQ says XFS v4 filesystems cannot be mounted with Linux kernel 6.18 or later, which it associates with Grml 2026.04 onward. This does not mean all XFS filesystems are affected. For an XFS v4 volume, the FAQ suggests trying an older release such as 2025.12.

Local accounts and SSH need setup

User accounts are locked by default, and there are no default passwords, so local logins are unavailable until you create a user and password. SSH is not enabled by default; the FAQ documents an ssh boot option that generates passwords and enables it. Read the FAQ before relying on remote access.

What is new in Grml 2026.09?

The Grml project announced the stable release on September 3, 2026, using the codename “Hättiwaritätti.” Its release notes say Grml 2026.09 is based on Debian testing/forky as of September 2026 and uses Linux kernel 7.1.8. The announcement and release details are available on the Grml news page and release notes.

For people building or customizing Grml rather than booting it, the release notes describe changes to grml-live: its build environment now requires Linux user namespaces, the described Docker and other container setups do not provide them inside containers, and chroot-based workflows are temporarily unsupported. grml-live is no longer shipped on the GRML_FULL ISO. The release also includes GNU Screen 5.0.1 with an adapted configuration that is not backwards compatible with GNU Screen 4.9 unless users use the provided screenrc_v4 file.
