The 2026 M6 Mac mini packs a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU into Apple’s familiar compact desktop, but its $899 U.S. launch price buys just 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. It is a capable small Mac for everyday work and creative tasks; buyers who need substantial local AI workloads, more memory, or more storage should compare the cost of upgrades with the M5 Pro model before buying.

What’s new in the M6 Mac mini?

Apple announced the M6 and higher-tier M5 Pro Mac mini on August 25, 2026, with availability beginning September 22. The M6 keeps the compact chassis associated with the 2024 M4 redesign rather than introducing a new exterior. Apple lists two front USB-C ports, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Buyers can configure 10Gb Ethernet. The M5 Pro has Thunderbolt 5 ports. Apple’s announcement and Apple’s specifications are the sources for these launch and hardware details.

The M6 specification includes a 12-core CPU—two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores—and a 12-core GPU, with Neural Accelerators, hardware-accelerated ray tracing and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The M6’s memory bandwidth is listed as up to 153GB/s at the base memory options and 170GB/s with 24GB or 32GB. Those bandwidth figures describe a technical characteristic, not a direct measure of how fast a particular application will run.

How much faster is it?

Apple says the M6 Mac mini is up to 40 percent faster in CPU performance, up to twice as fast in graphics and storage, and up to four times as fast in AI performance as the M4 Mac mini for the workloads used in its comparisons. Apple also reports up to 4.8 times faster LM Studio LLM prompt processing than M4 and up to 13.5 times faster than M1. These are Apple’s workload-specific, “up to” claims—not guarantees for every app or task.

Independent reviews describe a desktop that feels responsive for everyday work, photo editing and some modern games, but their results reflect particular configurations and tests. WIRED reviewer Luke Larsen reported that a 9-billion-parameter image-generation workflow produced a 20-step image in an average of 1 minute 40 seconds on the M6. He could not successfully load a 70-billion-parameter Llama model on the 16GB unit; a basic agentic workflow was still incomplete after half an hour. In that review, a 48GB M4 Pro MacBook Pro completed the task in 9 minutes 43 seconds. These observations are useful illustrations of the memory trade-off, not controlled cross-publication benchmarks. WIRED’s review includes the test context.

For gaming, Larsen reported 53 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 in his test, rising to 82 fps with light upscaling. That suggests the M6 can handle some games for a compact desktop, but it does not make the Mac mini a substitute for a dedicated gaming PC in every buyer’s use case. Tom’s Guide reviewer Anthony Spadafora also found the M6 noticeably faster for photo editing, everyday tasks and modern games, while criticizing the unchanged base memory and storage alongside the higher entry price. Tom’s Guide’s review is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict.

Configurations: is 16GB enough?

The M6 starts with 16GB unified memory and a 256GB SSD. At purchase, Apple lists options up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage. The M5 Pro starts at 24GB memory and 512GB SSD, with options up to 64GB and 8TB. Its chip starts with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, configurable to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU; Apple lists 307GB/s memory bandwidth for this model. The larger bandwidth figure is not by itself a promise of a particular real-world speedup.

Model Starting configuration Purchase-time options Ports and networking
M6 Mac mini 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU; 16GB memory; 256GB SSD Memory up to 32GB; SSD up to 2TB Three Thunderbolt 4 ports; 10Gb Ethernet is configurable
M5 Pro Mac mini 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU; 24GB memory; 512GB SSD CPU/GPU up to 18/20 cores; memory up to 64GB; SSD up to 8TB Thunderbolt 5 ports; 10Gb Ethernet is configurable

Specifications and configurable options are from Apple Support. The 16GB model is a reasonable starting point for general desktop use and lighter creative work, but it is a poor fit if your planned workload depends on large local models or sustained memory-heavy tasks. WIRED’s tests show the practical constraint: its 16GB unit did not load a 70-billion-parameter model. The reviewer argues that 32GB is more suitable for local AI experimentation; buyers who need 48GB or 64GB must look to the M5 Pro tier.

Storage deserves the same scrutiny. A 256GB starting SSD can fill quickly with large media libraries, games or local model files. Choose a larger configuration at purchase if internal space matters to your workflow, and compare its total price with the M5 Pro rather than judging by the base-model sticker alone. The cited Apple specifications establish the available capacities, but not the retail price of each upgrade.

How much does it cost, and is it worth it?

At launch, Apple priced the M6 at $899 in the United States, or $799 for education buyers; the M5 Pro started at $1,699, or $1,599 for education. Education pricing is not a general price, and regional prices differ. These are launch figures, and current retail prices may change. Apple’s August 25 announcement states the U.S. launch pricing.

Regional launch prices reported by The Guardian were £899 in the UK, €1,049 and A$1,449, compared with a £599 entry price for the predecessor. The Guardian connected the increase to memory-cost pressures; treat that as reporting context, not as an explanation Apple confirmed. The Guardian’s report gives the regional figures.

Whether the M6 is worth buying depends on the configured system and what you already own. It makes the most sense if you want a compact Mac desktop, have a monitor and input devices, and can work comfortably within the memory and storage you select. If you need more than 16GB, compare the price of an upgraded M6 with the M5 Pro’s higher starting memory and storage. For local AI experimentation, sustained creative work or other high-memory demands, the M5 Pro may be the better fit; it is not automatically the right choice for everyone, given its substantially higher starting price.

A Mac mini also needs a display and input devices, so include those in the total system cost if you do not already have them. If you need a computer you can carry and use away from a desk, compare it with a MacBook rather than treating the mini as a portable substitute. No single base price answers whether the M6 is good value without these configuration and setup choices.

What are the practical drawbacks?

  • No built-in SD card slot: Photographers and videographers who regularly ingest SD media may want a compatible dock or adapter. WIRED flags this as a workflow consideration; most ordinary desktop users will not need an SD reader.
  • Power button placement: WIRED reviewer Luke Larsen criticized its underside placement, which can make it less convenient to reach.
  • Memory ceiling on the M6: The M6 tops out at 32GB in Apple’s listed configurations. Buyers who know they need 48GB or 64GB should evaluate the M5 Pro instead.
  • Desktop-only setup: The compact computer is not an all-in-one, so a monitor and input devices are separate considerations.

The five-by-five-inch footprint and internal power supply are noted in WIRED’s review; Apple’s specification pages provide the authoritative dimensions and port details. Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji described the Mac mini as suitable for home computing, professional studios and always-on agentic use in the company’s August 25 announcement. That is Apple’s positioning, not independent evidence that every configuration suits every one of those workloads.
