Dropbear is a compact SSH server and client used by OpenWrt as its default SSH service. On OpenWrt, configure it through UCI in /etc/config/dropbear; secure access with public keys, limit where the service can be reached, and add a separate SFTP server package if you need SFTP. The commands and settings below are specific to OpenWrt—the service configuration for a generic Dropbear build may differ.

What Dropbear is and when it fits

The Dropbear project describes itself as “A smallish SSH server and client.” Its upstream project documents server host-key generation, key conversion, client authentication, and SCP-related functionality. OpenWrt includes Dropbear as its default SSH service, but packages and available features depend on the distribution and build.

Dropbear is a reasonable choice when the target system benefits from a compact SSH implementation and its available features meet the job. The reviewed project and OpenWrt documentation establish a qualitative trade-off—OpenSSH is larger but offers more features—not comparable measurements of size, memory use, speed, or security. Do not treat “lightweight” as a benchmark or proof of greater security.

Configure the Dropbear service on OpenWrt

OpenWrt stores Dropbear settings in /etc/config/dropbear and manages them with UCI. Each dropbear section defines a server instance, so a configuration can have multiple listeners. The documented options cover enabling an instance, its listening port, password and root authentication, host-key files, and interface binding. See the OpenWrt Dropbear configuration reference for the options supported by your release.

The instance index and option names should be checked against the device’s existing configuration. A port change only changes where Dropbear listens; it is not a substitute for restricting network reachability. When changing a listener you use for access, keep a working session open and verify that a new connection succeeds on the new port before closing the old session or changing firewall access.

Bind the service to an interface

Where supported by the device’s configuration, bind the instance to the intended interface rather than allowing it to listen on every network. Also review firewall zones and rules: interface binding and firewall reachability are distinct controls. A listener that should be available only on a trusted LAN or VPN should not be reachable from the WAN.

Use public-key authentication and protect access

OpenWrt’s public-key authentication guide recommends key authentication and disabling password authentication where the deployment permits it. Install and test a working public key before turning off password login; otherwise, a mistake in the key, its location, or the device’s algorithm support can lock you out.

  1. Generate a key pair on the client. Use a key type supported by both the client and the target device. Keep the private key on the client and do not copy it to the router.
  2. Install the public key on OpenWrt. Follow the platform’s authorized-key instructions in the OpenWrt guide. Exact paths and accepted key algorithms depend on the image and device.
  3. Test key login in a second session. Confirm you can authenticate before disabling password authentication. If login fails, check the public key’s placement and permissions, and verify algorithm support for the device’s Dropbear build.
  4. Disable password authentication only after the test succeeds. Change the relevant Dropbear setting in LuCI or UCI, commit the configuration, and restart the service. Check whether root password authentication and root login need separate changes in your setup.

OpenWrt notes that Dropbear on some devices with small flash memory may not support Ed25519 keys. Do not assume an algorithm works merely because the client can generate it; check the device-specific guidance and test a connection before removing another access method.

Upstream Dropbear guidance also emphasizes restrictive permissions on a user’s .ssh directory and authorized-key file. The exact account, paths, and service behavior on OpenWrt can differ from a generic Linux installation, so use the target platform’s instructions when diagnosing rejected keys. Dropbear host keys are distinct from user authentication keys: upstream documents generating host keys once or allowing the server to create them on first connection. Verify your distribution’s host-key paths and behavior rather than copying generic paths blindly.

Limit exposure beyond authentication

OpenWrt’s configuration documentation recommends using a VPN instead of exposing SSH directly to the internet. Restrict SSH to a trusted network or VPN, and review firewall rules as well as the listening interface. Moving the service to a non-default port does not meaningfully replace those controls.

The same OpenWrt documentation identifies limits in the standard environment: ordinary user/group separation is unavailable, and there is no built-in facility to ban addresses after repeated failed logins. These constraints make network-level access restriction particularly important. The precise security posture still depends on the firmware, device configuration, and how the service is exposed.

Dropbear does not provide SFTP

Dropbear itself does not include an SFTP server. OpenWrt’s OpenSSH and SFTP guide points users who need SFTP to install the openssh-sftp-server package. The available package and installation details should be confirmed for the OpenWrt release in use. OpenWrt also describes its OpenSSH client as using SFTP by default; that client behavior does not mean the Dropbear server provides SFTP.

If you need SFTP, decide whether adding the server package is sufficient or whether OpenSSH better fits your requirements. OpenSSH offers more features but is larger; the official material does not establish a numeric footprint comparison. Consider required features, device storage and resource constraints, package availability, and whether existing keys and clients work with the chosen server.

Switch servers without losing access

OpenWrt’s migration guidance recommends moving Dropbear to a different port before installing OpenSSH to avoid a listener conflict. Keep Dropbear available while setting up and testing the replacement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Move the Dropbear listener to a temporary port and confirm you can reconnect to it.
  2. Install OpenSSH and the SFTP server package required for your use case, following the current package instructions for your OpenWrt release.
  3. Check the new server’s listener, key locations, and authentication settings. Test an SSH login and, if needed, an SFTP transfer.
  4. Only after the replacement accepts your credentials and provides the required access should you disable Dropbear or remove its listener.

Do not remove or disable the only working SSH server before verifying the replacement. The OpenWrt migration guide was last modified on 2024-03-03; check its package and migration details against your current release.
