In browsers that support it, WordPress processes uploads in the browser: it can compress and resize images, convert formats, and generate the registered thumbnail sizes. Unsupported browsers fall back to server-side processing. The documented feature concerns uploads; it does not establish that WordPress automatically bulk-optimizes images already in your Media Library.
What WordPress 7.1 does to an image upload
WordPress 7.1 moves much of image processing into the browser, using WebAssembly and libvips. The Core developer note describes compression, resizing, cropping, format conversion, EXIF rotation, progressive or interlaced encoding, and generation of the image sub-sizes registered by the site. Those generated files are then uploaded to WordPress. The WordPress 7.1 release page also highlights support for AVIF, HEIC, and HDR gain maps.
In practical terms, this is an upload-pipeline change: it can reduce the work WordPress’s server must do when processing a new image, and it can make the generated files smaller. It is not evidence that WordPress searches through your existing library and recompresses every image already on the site.
Does it make every image smaller?
No fixed reduction is guaranteed for an individual image. Adam Silverstein’s WordPress Core developer note says libvips produces better-compressed output than GD or Imagick and reports that “JPEGs are reduced ~15% with MozJPEG like encoding.” That is an implementation comparison for generated JPEGs, not a promise that each JPEG upload will shrink by 15%, nor a measured speed improvement for every site.

Actual results depend on the source image, the generated sizes and formats, and the processing route. WordPress describes smaller files and lower server CPU and memory use as benefits, but the cited materials do not establish a universal before-and-after page-speed gain.
Browser support and fallback
Client-side processing is enabled by default in browsers with the required capabilities, according to the Core note. When those capabilities are unavailable, WordPress falls back to server-side processing. The note also describes a filterable feature gate for developers, so a site’s configuration can affect whether the browser route is enabled. As a result, not every user, upload, or site necessarily processes images in the same way.

HEIC decoding has additional platform dependencies. The Core note identifies Chromium browsers on macOS, Windows systems with HEVC support, and Safari on macOS; it does not promise identical HEIC handling on every browser-device combination. If HEIC uploads are important to your workflow, verify that your actual browser and operating system support decoding rather than assuming every phone photo will follow the same path.
Does it optimize images already in the Media Library?
The official WordPress 7.1 materials describe processing during upload, not a bulk scan of existing Media Library files. Do not assume upgrading to 7.1 will retroactively recompress your older images. If you need to process an existing library, that is a separate task from the built-in upload workflow.

Do you still need an image optimization plugin?
Not necessarily for ordinary new uploads in a supported browser: WordPress Core now handles several common processing tasks. A plugin may still be useful if you need bulk optimization of an existing library or additional controls and workflows. For example, the WordPress.org listing for Image Optimizer – Compress Images and Convert to WebP or AVIF documents bulk optimization functionality. Check current plugin documentation for the exact supported formats, controls, service requirements, and compatibility before choosing one; the existence of a plugin feature does not mean every site needs it.

Which WordPress 7.1 version is current?
WordPress 7.1 “Mary Lou” was released on August 19, 2026, and WordPress 7.1.1 followed on September 17, 2026. The 7.1 version page and 7.1.1 version page record those dates. The reviewed version information does not say that 7.1.1 changed the image-processing feature. Thus, when discussing the feature in the 7.1 series, distinguish the original 7.1 capability from the latest maintenance release rather than implying a new optimization change in 7.1.1.
