Use TensorFlow’s math namespace instead of the missing top-level attribute: tf.math.count_nonzero(x). TensorFlow’s v2.16.1 API reference documents this as the operation for counting nonzero tensor elements. If the replacement also fails, check which TensorFlow package and Python environment your program actually imports.
Replace the top-level call
Change code such as tf.count_nonzero(x) to:
count = tf.math.count_nonzero(x)The documented API is tf.math.count_nonzero. It counts nonzero elements in a tensor, reducing across all dimensions by default. For TensorFlow 1.x-style code that needs a compatibility API, TensorFlow also documents tf.compat.v1.count_nonzero.
Preserve the operation’s behavior
Moving the call into tf.math does not change what is counted, but the reduction settings and input values determine the result.
- Reduction: With
axis=None, the operation counts across all dimensions. Setaxisto count along selected dimensions; usekeepdimswhen the reduced dimensions should remain in the output. - Output type: The output dtype defaults to
tf.int64. - Zero comparison: Floating-point values are compared exactly with zero. A small value that is not exactly zero is counted as nonzero.
- Other input types: Boolean and numeric tensors are supported. For strings, the empty string is treated as zero, so nonempty strings count as nonzero.
If you use tf.compat.v1.count_nonzero, prefer the argument names axis and keepdims. The compatibility reference marks reduction_indices and keep_dims as deprecated.

Check the imported TensorFlow if the error continues
The error message by itself does not identify the installed TensorFlow version, active Python interpreter, or imported module location. Run these checks in the same terminal, notebook kernel, or virtual environment that runs the failing code:

print(tf.math.count_nonzero)Confirm that tf.__file__ points to the TensorFlow installation you expect. If it points into your project, or several unrelated TensorFlow attributes are missing, inspect the import path and environment before changing more application code. A local file or directory named tensorflow can interfere with importing the installed package.

Historical reports of missing public attributes show that version and installation context can matter, but they do not establish the cause of this particular error. Do not assume a specific package defect without checking the environment that produces it.
