Make the fēnix 9 Pro quicker to use before you head out: double-press the upper-left button to toggle its flashlight, customize a button-hold shortcut, and use Garmin’s route and location tools to stay oriented. The watch also offers voice notes and voice commands, with some features dependent on model and setup.
1. Double-press the upper-left button to toggle the flashlight
A quick double press of the upper-left button turns the flashlight on or off, according to Garmin’s fēnix 9 Series Owner’s Manual: Button Functions. It is a fast way to reach light without navigating through watch menus. Try the shortcut at home so it is familiar before you need it outdoors.
Garmin also documents a custom strobe mode in Controls. Consult the Controls menu on your watch for the available options; Garmin’s cited documentation does not establish a particular brightness or battery-life result for using the flashlight.
2. Make a button hold your personal shortcut
Some button-hold functions can be customized, and Garmin’s manual says you can create new button shortcuts. Assign a function you reach for often so it takes fewer steps to open.

Because available functions and menu labels can vary with model variant and software setup, check the current on-watch settings and the Button Functions section of the manual before following a specific menu path. The cited material establishes that customization is supported, but does not provide a verified, universal sequence of menu selections for every setup.
3. Pair round-trip routing with NextFork on the trail
Plan a route for a chosen distance
Garmin describes dynamic round-trip routing as a way to suggest routes for a distance you choose. If you go off course, the watch can recalculate to keep the route at the same mileage. Treat the result as a planning aid, not a promise that the route or its conditions are suitable.

Check what is coming up
NextFork shows the distance to the next intersection and the trail name. Used together, the two tools can help with route planning and in-route orientation. They do not guarantee map accuracy or safe trail conditions, so use your judgment and other appropriate navigation information for the area.
4. Save a useful position before you move on
Garmin’s Controls reference lists Save Location, which records your current position for later navigation, and Reference Point, which sets a point for navigation. These can help preserve a position such as a trailhead, parked vehicle, or point of interest.

The Apps section also lists Project Wpt., which creates a location based on distance and bearing. Use Garmin’s feature names when looking for these tools, and check the on-watch prompts and manual for the precise workflow on your model and software version.
5. Use voice features to cut down on menu work
Record a voice note
Garmin lists Voice Notes as an app for recording a note. The product page says the watch’s microphone and speaker support voice notes. This can be useful when you want to capture a thought without typing, though the cited materials do not promise that voice input will work reliably in every environment.

Know which voice command you mean
Voice Command lets you speak a command the watch can perform. Separately, Garmin says the microphone and speaker support interaction with a phone voice assistant when the watch is paired with a smartphone. These are distinct functions: a watch command is not the same as asking the phone’s assistant, and the latter depends on phone pairing and setup.

Garmin’s Getting Started guidance says to pair the watch with a phone during setup and check for software updates; Garmin notes updates may include privacy, security, and feature improvements. For a fēnix 9 Pro – inReach, Garmin says to activate an inReach service plan in the Garmin Messenger app.

Garmin’s August 25, 2026 announcement says the inReach variant includes LTE and satellite connectivity for messaging, voice, and SOS features, while warning that connectivity and SOS functionality have important limitations and may not be available in some situations or areas. Check Garmin’s current feature requirements and coverage for your location and intended travel. Do not treat the watch as a guaranteed emergency lifeline.
