In TensorFlow 2, replace tf.truncated_normal(...) with tf.random.truncated_normal(...) when you need a random tensor. If the call initializes a Keras layer’s weights, use tf.keras.initializers.TruncatedNormal instead. The error usually means code is using an older TensorFlow API path; disabling eager execution is not the first fix.

Why does TensorFlow have no attribute truncated_normal?

The direct tf.truncated_normal name comes from older TensorFlow code. The current TensorFlow API documents tf.random.truncated_normal as the path for generating a tensor from a truncated normal distribution. The TensorFlow 2.16.1 API reference, last updated April 26, 2024, also lists compatibility aliases under tf.compat.v1. See the TensorFlow API reference.

With a truncated normal distribution, values more than two standard deviations from the specified mean are discarded and redrawn. Preserve the original call’s shape, mean, standard deviation, dtype, and seed as appropriate; in particular, do not lose a non-default standard deviation when changing the API path.

Replace the call based on what it is for

Use case Recommended API When to choose it
Generate a random tensor tf.random.truncated_normal(...) Use for a standalone tensor in modern TensorFlow code.
Initialize Keras layer weights tf.keras.initializers.TruncatedNormal(...) Use when the old expression was supplied as a layer’s weight initializer.
Keep legacy graph/session code running tf.compat.v1.truncated_normal(...) Use as a compatibility aid when the surrounding code still relies on TF1 conventions.
Migrate many TF1 symbols tf_upgrade_v2 Use as a starting point for a larger migration, then review and test its conversions.

For a standalone random tensor

Use the TensorFlow 2 API path:

import tensorflow as tf

weights = tf.random.truncated_normal(
    shape=[784, 10],
    mean=0.0,
    stddev=0.1,
)

The API signature is tf.random.truncated_normal(shape, mean=0.0, stddev=1.0, dtype=tf.float32, seed=None, name=None). Its default standard deviation is 1.0, so copy any different value from the old call rather than relying on the default.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a Keras layer initializer

A weight initializer is not the same thing as creating a random tensor to use elsewhere. Set the layer’s kernel_initializer to a Keras initializer:

layer = tf.keras.layers.Dense(
    10,
    kernel_initializer=tf.keras.initializers.TruncatedNormal(
        mean=0.0,
        stddev=0.1,
    ),
)

This configures how the Dense layer initializes its kernel. Choose the initializer API when the failing expression was intended to initialize layer weights, rather than assigning a generated tensor as the initializer.

For code that still uses TF1 graph/session conventions

TensorFlow documents tf.compat.v1.truncated_normal and tf.compat.v1.random.truncated_normal as compatibility aliases. They can help with a transition when the surrounding program still depends on legacy graph/session behavior. They do not mean the whole program has been migrated; prefer the native TensorFlow 2 API for new or modernized code.

Check the environment if the replacement does not work

  1. Inspect the traceback and the failing line. If your code calls tf.truncated_normal, replace it with the API that matches its purpose above.

  2. In the same interpreter or notebook kernel that runs the code, check the installed version:

    import tensorflow as tf
    print(tf.__version__)
  3. Confirm that import tensorflow as tf resolves to the intended installed package. Look for a project file or folder named tensorflow, which could interfere with the import, and confirm the notebook is using the expected Python environment.

    • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  4. Check which file the import loaded:

    import tensorflow as tf
    print(tf.__file__)

    If that path points into your project rather than the installed TensorFlow package, investigate the name conflict before changing package versions.

  5. Read the traceback to identify where the error originates. If it points inside an older third-party Keras or backend library rather than your code, check whether that dependency supports your installed TensorFlow version. The right upgrade or compatibility change depends on the versions and traceback; do not downgrade TensorFlow blindly.

When to use TensorFlow’s migration tool

If a larger codebase contains many TensorFlow 1.x symbols, TensorFlow’s TF 1.x and compat.v1 API migration guide describes tf_upgrade_v2 as a way to rewrite some symbols automatically. Run it as a first pass, inspect its report, and test the converted program. The tool cannot migrate every API or guarantee behavioral compatibility, and some legacy symbols map to tf.compat.v1 rather than to a fully modern TensorFlow 2 pattern.

Should you disable eager execution?

Not to fix this missing attribute by itself. The exception concerns the API path, and tf.random.truncated_normal is available without changing execution mode. Disable eager execution only when the surrounding legacy program specifically requires graph/session semantics; it is not a substitute for replacing the removed or relocated name.
