A Mac flashing folder icon with a question mark means the startup disk is unavailable or does not contain a working copy of macOS. It does not, by itself, prove the drive has physically failed. What to do next depends on whether the icon disappears, how you enter macOS Recovery, and what Disk Utility reports.
What the flashing question-mark folder means
Apple says a flashing question-mark folder appears when “your computer’s startup disk is no longer available or doesn’t contain a working Mac operating system.” Apple’s startup troubleshooting guide treats this as a startup-disk discovery or working-system problem. A disk problem is possible, but the icon alone does not establish hardware failure.
First distinguish a brief flash during startup from a persistent screen. If the Mac continues to its desktop, use the Startup Disk setting. If it stays on the folder, follow the Recovery and Disk Utility steps below. A circle with a slash is a different symbol: it means the startup disk contains macOS, but not a version or build the Mac can use. Apple’s startup-screen guide covers that and other startup screens separately.
Seven steps to troubleshoot the question-mark folder
1. Check whether the Mac eventually starts
If the question-mark folder appears only briefly and the Mac then starts normally, choose the correct startup disk in Startup Disk settings. On current macOS versions, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then General > Startup Disk. Select the disk that contains macOS and restart if prompted. If the Mac still starts only after a delay, Apple advises resetting NVRAM and checking the Startup Disk setting again; use Apple’s current instructions for the reset procedure that applies to your Mac.

2. Disconnect nonessential devices
Shut down the Mac and unplug nonessential accessories and external storage, leaving only what is needed to operate it. This removes peripheral devices from the startup troubleshooting path. If the internal startup disk remains missing in Disk Utility or an erase attempt fails, Apple also recommends shutting down, disconnecting nonessential devices, and trying again.
3. Enter macOS Recovery using the method for your Mac
The startup method depends on whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor. If you are unsure, Apple’s Recovery instructions explain how to identify the right method.

| Mac type | How to open Recovery |
|---|---|
| Apple silicon | Shut down. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select Options, then click Continue. |
| Intel | Turn on the Mac and immediately press and hold Command-R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears. Release the keys when prompted. |
On Intel Macs, Option-Command-R and Shift-Option-Command-R can start Internet Recovery and affect which macOS version is offered. Use those combinations only when appropriate to your reinstall needs. If Recovery asks you to join a network, connect to the internet; an Apple-silicon Recovery reinstall also requires an internet connection.
4. Run First Aid in Disk Utility
In Recovery, open Disk Utility. If the startup disk or its volumes are hidden, choose View > Show All Devices. Select the startup disk and run First Aid, following the order and prompts shown by Disk Utility. Apple’s question-mark startup guidance recommends repairing the startup disk before moving on to reinstalling or erasing macOS.

5. Restart if First Aid finds no errors or repairs them
If Disk Utility reports no errors or says it repaired the disk, restart the Mac. If it starts normally, no reinstall is needed. If the question-mark folder returns, enter Recovery again and continue with reinstalling macOS.
6. Reinstall macOS from Recovery if the question mark returns
In Recovery, choose Reinstall macOS and follow the onscreen steps. Keep the Mac connected to the internet and follow any network prompts. Reinstalling is the next step when First Aid reports no remaining errors or repair succeeds but the startup problem persists. Apple lists Disk Utility, Reinstall macOS, and Time Machine restore among Recovery’s tools; see its macOS Recovery overview.

7. Erase only if Disk Utility cannot repair the errors, then reinstall
Erasing the startup disk deletes its data. Before proceeding, consider whether you have a current backup, such as a Time Machine backup, and whether preserving data is more important than attempting an erase. Do not erase simply because the question-mark folder appeared.
If Disk Utility reports errors it cannot repair and you decide to proceed, use Apple’s instructions for erasing a Mac, then reinstall macOS from Recovery. If the startup disk does not appear in Disk Utility or Disk Utility cannot erase it, Apple says the Mac or startup disk might need service. Those are the specific conditions for contacting Apple or an Apple-authorized service provider; the icon alone is not enough to conclude service is required.
