To remove elements from an array in Python, first identify the object you have: the examples below apply to a standard Python list. Use remove(value) to delete the first matching value, pop(index) to delete by position and retrieve the item, del to delete an index or range, and a list comprehension to filter items into a new list. Python’s separate array module and third-party array types may have different APIs.

Choose the right list operation

What you want to remove Use What happens
The first item equal to a value items.remove(value) Mutates the list; raises ValueError if no equal item exists. Python 3.15.0rc3 tutorial.
An item at a position, and you need its value removed = items.pop(index) Mutates the list and returns the removed item. Without an argument, pop() removes and returns the last item. An empty list or invalid index raises IndexError. Python 3.15.0rc3 tutorial.
An item at a position, without needing its value del items[index] Deletes the indexed item from the existing list; it does not return the removed value. Python 3.14.8 Built-in Types.
A range of items del items[start:stop] Deletes the items selected by the slice from the existing list. Python 3.14.8 Built-in Types.
Every item that fails a condition items = [x for x in items if keep(x)] Builds a new list containing items for which keep(x) is true, then rebinds items to it. Python 3.14.8 Built-in Types.
All items, while keeping the list object items.clear() or del items[:] Empties the existing list. The tutorial describes clear() as similar to del a[:]. Python 3.15.0rc3 tutorial; Python 3.14.8 Built-in Types.

Remove the first matching value with remove()

remove(value) compares items for equality and removes only the first match. If values repeat, later matches remain. The method changes the existing list and returns None, so do not assign its result back to the list.

items = ["red", "blue", "red", "green"]
items.remove("red")

print(items)  # ['blue', 'red', 'green']

If the value may be absent, check before calling remove() so the expected missing-value case does not raise an uncaught exception:

if "orange" in items:
    items.remove("orange")

Without that check, remove() raises ValueError when there is no equal item in the list.

Remove by position with pop() or del

Use pop() when you need the removed item

Pass an index to remove that position and save the returned value. Python list indexes start at zero, so index 0 is the first item. Calling pop() without an index removes the last item.

items = ["red", "blue", "green"]
removed = items.pop(1)

print(removed)  # blue
print(items)    # ['red', 'green']

An empty list or an index outside the list’s valid range raises IndexError. Check the list or index first if those cases are possible.

Use del when you do not need the removed item

del deletes an item by index without returning it:

items = ["red", "blue", "green"]
del items[0]

print(items)  # ['blue', 'green']

It also accepts a slice. The stop bound follows ordinary slice behavior: it is excluded from the selected range.

items = ["red", "blue", "green", "yellow"]
del items[1:3]

print(items)  # ['red', 'yellow']

Remove multiple matching items with a comprehension

To discard every item equal to a value, filter the list instead of calling remove() just once. A comprehension creates a new list containing the items that pass its condition:

items = ["red", "blue", "red", "green"]
items = [x for x in items if x != "red"]

print(items)  # ['blue', 'green']

This reassigns the variable items to a different list object. If other parts of your program hold a reference to the original list and need to see the change, use an approach that mutates that list rather than rebinding the variable.

Empty a list without replacing it

Call clear() to remove all items from the existing list. You can also delete the full slice with del items[:]. These approaches preserve the list object, which matters when other variables refer to that same list.

Check the array type before using list methods

Python lists are not the only objects people call arrays. The operations here describe built-in lists; they should not be assumed to work identically on the standard-library array module, NumPy arrays, or other array-like types. Check the object’s type and consult that type’s documentation before choosing a removal method.
