File Commander is a cross-platform desktop file manager built around two panels, in the orthodox style associated with Total Commander. The project targets Windows first, also supports macOS and Linux, and describes FreeBSD support as best-effort. Its README confirms plugin support, but does not document specific plugins or many everyday file operations; check the project’s release page and documentation before assuming it has a particular capability.

What File Commander is

File Commander is the desktop project in the VioletGiraffe/file-commander GitHub repository. Its maintainers describe it as a “cross-platform orthodox dual-panel file manager with plugin support.” The name can be confused with MobiSystems’ Android app, also called File Commander; this article covers the desktop GitHub project, not that app.

A dual-panel manager displays two file locations at once. This layout is useful when moving or organizing items between folders because you can keep the source and destination visible together. “Orthodox” describes this traditional two-panel style; it does not mean that File Commander is Total Commander or that it necessarily offers every feature Total Commander users may expect.

Platforms and downloads

Platform Project-stated support What to know
Windows Primary target The README links to the latest release and says current Windows builds are x64.
macOS Supported The README describes a source-build route; check the project’s release page for available prebuilt downloads.
Linux Supported The README describes a Qt 6 qmake and make build route; check the release page for current distribution options.
FreeBSD Best-effort Support depends on the Linux implementation working unchanged.

The repository README does not establish a release number or publication date. Use its latest release link to verify the current Windows build and any downloads offered for other systems.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What is documented—and what is not

The project README establishes two concrete capabilities: a dual-panel interface and plugin support. It does not identify plugins or explain what they add. The available project description also does not verify features such as synchronization, remote file protocols, archive browsing, or batch renaming. Treat those as unconfirmed unless the project’s current documentation or a specific plugin explicitly establishes them.

This distinction matters if you are choosing a manager for a particular workflow: the panel layout is clear, but the README alone is not a feature checklist. Confirm the operations you need before relying on File Commander for them.

Building File Commander from source

The README specifies a C++23-capable compiler and Qt 6.8 or newer. It also notes that the repository uses submodules and points to platform-specific build instructions and update scripts. Follow the current instructions in the project repository, since build steps and dependencies can change.

Platform README build direction
Windows Visual Studio 2022 or later, with a C++23-capable compiler.
Linux Qt 6 qmake and make.
macOS Qt Creator, or an Xcode project generated with qmake.

Before compiling, initialize or update the required submodules using the repository’s platform-specific instructions. The README identifies update scripts for Windows and Linux/macOS; use the one appropriate to your environment rather than assuming a plain checkout contains everything needed.

How it compares with Double Commander

Double Commander is a separate free, open-source twin-panel manager inspired by Total Commander. Its official documentation describes features including tabbed panels, background operations, full-text search, multi-file renaming, directory synchronization, customizable columns, a built-in viewer and editor, and archive browsing. Its homepage lists FTP, FTPS, FTPES, SSH+SCP, and SFTP support. These are documented Double Commander features, not established File Commander features.

The available documentation supports only a limited comparison: File Commander is explicitly dual-panel and supports plugins, while Double Commander documents a broader feature set. The sources do not establish enough about File Commander to compare features one by one. If a documented operation is essential, consult each project’s current documentation for that specific operation before choosing.
