Next.js does not have one timeless, universal “four caches” setup. The familiar four-layer diagram describes the previous App Router caching model, useful especially for understanding apps that do not use Cache Components. Next.js 16 introduces Cache Components, where caching is explicit and opt-in. First identify which model your app uses; then distinguish what each cache stores, where it lives, and what can make it stale or clear it.
Which Next.js caching model applies?
Start with the app’s configuration and the documentation for its Next.js version. The classic Request Memoization, Data Cache, Full Route Cache, and Router Cache map is the previous App Router model. The official Next.js caching guide that describes it assumes Cache Components are not in use; the Next.js 15 caching guide is a useful explanation of that model, not proof that its defaults apply to every Next.js 16 app.
Next.js 16 introduces Cache Components. With cacheComponents enabled, you opt into cached work using use cache and related APIs, rather than assuming the old implicit caching defaults. Dynamic code runs at request time by default in this model. The four-layer map remains useful for explaining the older model and browser navigation, but it is not a universal diagram of Next.js 16 behavior.
In short: use the four layers below to understand the previous model; for a Next.js 16 app with Cache Components, inspect its explicit cache scopes and revalidation APIs.

What are the four caches in the previous App Router model?
The key is to ask what value is being reused. A repeated data request, persistent server data, prerendered route output, and client-side navigation payload are different things with different lifetimes.
| Layer | What it reuses | Where and how long | Typical reuse or invalidation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Request Memoization | Identical fetch work in a React component tree; request-scoped React.cache results where used |
During the current render/request; not persisted for the next incoming request | Another matching call in that render can reuse the result; a new request starts a new scope |
| Data Cache | Data, such as a cached fetch result | Server-side; in the previous model, may be reused across incoming requests, subject to cache policy and runtime or platform configuration | Cache policy, time-based revalidation, or on-demand invalidation can affect reuse |
| Full Route Cache | Prerendered route output, including HTML and the RSC payload | Server-side route output; reuse depends on whether and how the route is rendered and revalidated | Route rendering strategy and the data used to render it affect whether output can be reused |
| Router Cache | RSC payloads for route segments | In the client/browser for navigation; not server-side persistent data | Client navigation may reuse payloads; invalidation behavior can differ between Server Actions and Route Handlers |
This is the previous-model comparison documented in the Next.js 15 caching guide and the current guide for apps without Cache Components. It is a map of separate mechanisms, not four names for one shared store.
Request Memoization: “Did this render already ask for this?”
Memoization deduplicates matching work within a render/request. The current Next.js Fetching Data guide says identical fetch requests in a React component tree are memoized by default. That lets components request the data they need without necessarily passing it through every parent as props.
Memoized does not mean saved for the next visitor. The same guide says fetch requests are not cached by default. A later incoming request may perform the fetch again unless some separate persistent caching behavior applies. React’s cache is also scoped to the current request.

Data Cache: “Can the server reuse this data across requests?”
In the previous model, the Data Cache is the server-side layer for reusing data beyond a single render. Its behavior depends on the request’s caching policy, revalidation, and the runtime or hosting configuration. It is separate from Request Memoization: one deduplicates work within a request; the other can preserve data across requests.
Do not read “Next.js caches fetch” as a blanket current default. The current Fetching Data guide says fetch requests are not cached by default, and the Next.js 16 Cache Components model makes cached scopes explicit. Check the applicable version and configuration before relying on persistence.
Full Route Cache: “Can the server reuse the rendered route?”
The Full Route Cache holds prerendered route output, rather than just a raw data result. In the previous model, route output depends on the data used to render it. Revalidating or opting out of the Data Cache can therefore invalidate the Full Route Cache as well.
The dependency does not make them the same cache. A route can render dynamically while still consuming some cached data. Conversely, reusing route output is about avoiding regeneration of that rendered route, not simply returning one data fetch result.

Router Cache: “Can this browser reuse route data during navigation?”
The Router Cache keeps RSC payloads for route segments in client memory to help with client-side navigation. It is not the server Data Cache and does not, by itself, make server data persistent across incoming requests.
How revalidation affects browser-held navigation state depends on the path taken. The previous-model guide distinguishes revalidation in a Server Action from revalidation in a Route Handler. Do not assume that any server-side tag invalidation immediately clears every open browser’s Router Cache.
How does caching work with Next.js 16 Cache Components?
Cache Components shift the question from “which implicit cache default applied?” to “which scope did the developer explicitly mark for caching?” Enable cacheComponents, then use use cache at file, component, or function scope, as described in the official use cache reference. Dynamic code is request-time by default in this model.
Keep runtime-dependent values outside cached scopes
A cached scope cannot directly access runtime APIs such as cookies() and headers(). Read the needed value outside the cached function or component and pass the relevant data in as an argument. This makes the dependency explicit and helps avoid treating per-user or per-request information as if it were safely shareable cached output.

Account for the hosting runtime
The use cache documentation notes that runtime cache persistence depends on hosting. Serverless instances may not preserve in-memory entries between requests; self-hosted environments may preserve them. Remote cache handlers are available when a deployment needs a suitable shared or persistent cache.
So an explicit cache scope describes what should be cached, but it does not alone guarantee one universal backing store or lifetime across every deployment. Verify the runtime and cache-handler behavior for the environment where the app runs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which revalidation API should you use?
Choose based on the consistency the user needs and the caching model in use. In the previous model, the caching guide covers time-based revalidation and on-demand revalidation by tag or path. A data tag targets data; a path action targets route output. Client navigation state has its own interactions, so neither operation should be casually described as a universal browser-cache purge.
For Next.js 16 Cache Components
cacheLifesets time-based cache behavior for a cached scope.revalidateTag(tag, profile)is the stale-while-revalidate choice. In Next.js 16, the profile governs how stale content can be served while refresh happens.updateTagis available only in Server Actions and provides read-your-writes behavior by expiring and refreshing data in the same request.revalidatePathrevalidates by route path.
Use stale-while-revalidate only where showing the existing value while an update runs is acceptable—for example, content where a short delay is tolerable. For an account form where the person expects to see their own change immediately, use the read-your-writes behavior of updateTag in a Server Action.

These APIs belong to the Cache Components model. Do not transplant their semantics into older route-segment configuration examples without checking the versioned documentation.
Why might a fetch run again on another request?
That can be expected. Request Memoization covers matching work inside a request/render; it is not cross-request persistence. The current Fetching Data guide also says fetch requests are not cached by default. If the fetch runs again for a later visitor, verify that the app has an applicable persistent caching policy or an explicit Cache Components scope, and check whether revalidation or deployment behavior affects reuse.
- Repeated call in one render: matching
fetchcalls may be memoized in the React component tree. - Call on a separate incoming request: memoization alone does not carry the result over; persistent caching must be configured where appropriate.
- Next.js 16 with Cache Components: confirm that
cacheComponentsis enabled and the relevant work is inside ause cachescope. - Multiple server instances: confirm whether cache entries and invalidation signals are shared across instances.
What changes when Next.js runs on multiple instances or behind a CDN?
Self-hosting guidance says the default server cache is local to each Next.js instance. If an application needs shared cached pages or data, or coordinated invalidation across instances, it needs an appropriate shared cache handler and tag coordination. An invalidation received by one instance does not automatically establish that every other instance has received it.
A CDN is another layer, not a way to merge the four caches. Next.js emits cache-control headers according to rendering strategy, and static, ISR, and dynamic output can differ. The CDN must preserve the relevant cache and variation behavior. Putting a CDN in front of an app does not make its request memoization, server Data Cache, route output, and browser Router Cache one shared cache.

Quick Recap
A practical way to reason about a cache issue
- Identify the model. Check the Next.js version and whether
cacheComponentsis enabled. Do not assume the previous model’s defaults in a Next.js 16 app using Cache Components. - Name the value you want reused. Is it a repeated call in one render, data across requests, prerendered route output, or a browser navigation payload?
- Check the intended lifetime. Request-only deduplication, persistent server data, route revalidation, and client navigation reuse are different goals.
- Choose the matching control. Use the APIs for that version and model; in Cache Components, define explicit cached scopes and select time-based or on-demand revalidation based on consistency needs.
- Check the deployment boundary. Determine whether the runtime preserves entries and whether instances share cache storage and invalidation state.
