Short answer: iPhone users can delete some built-in Apple apps, while Android app removal depends on the phone maker, model, software version and app. On either platform, removing an icon, disabling an app and deleting it from the device are different actions.
What do “remove,” “disable” and “delete” mean?
- Remove from Home Screen: Takes an icon off the iPhone Home Screen but keeps the app in App Library.
- Disable: Turns off an app where the phone permits it. This is not the same as uninstalling it, and it may not free storage.
- Delete or uninstall: Removes an app from the device when that option is available. The wording and effect depend on the phone and app.
Check the exact app on your own device: long-press its icon or open its app settings and read the available actions. A button labelled “Remove” may only hide an icon. Menu labels and options vary by model and software version.
Which pre-installed apps can you delete on each brand?

How to check or remove an app on your phone
iPhone: choose between hiding and deleting
- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Tap Remove App.
- Choose Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or choose Delete App to delete it from the iPhone. The options and effects are described in Apple’s iOS 26 guide.
Deleting a built-in app may remove associated data and configuration files and affect related system functions. Apple says some effects can be restored by downloading the app again.
Google Pixel: look for Disable in Settings
- Open Settings > Apps > All apps.
- Select the app.
- Tap Disable if that option is available. Google’s Pixel instructions say some pre-installed system apps cannot be deleted.
Motorola: disable supported preloaded apps
- Open Settings > Apps > All apps.
- Select the preloaded app.
- Tap Disable if available. Motorola’s Android 14 help says preloaded apps cannot be removed and warns that disabled ones may still consume storage.
Samsung Galaxy S23: use the action offered for that app
Touch and hold the app to see the available option. The S23 series manual describes uninstalling downloaded apps and disabling selected default apps, but notes that some apps may not support the feature. See Samsung’s manual for this model series.

Which brand lets you remove the most bloatware?
The available official guidance does not establish a reliable brand ranking. It does not provide a controlled, model-by-model inventory comparing which apps can be deleted, disabled, hidden, or removed without affecting other functions. A fair comparison requires the exact phone, software version, app and—where relevant—region or carrier.
For a purchase decision, check the removal options for the specific pre-installed apps that matter to you rather than relying on a blanket claim about iPhone or Android. Android’s general guidance confirms that some system apps cannot be deleted, and the options depend on the device maker.
