Yes—you can use Astro for the storefront and keep WordPress and WooCommerce running the store. In this setup, Astro controls how pages are presented, WordPress can continue supplying content, and WooCommerce remains responsible for products, customer carts, orders, and payment workflows. The safe approach is to migrate the presentation layer while deliberately preserving cart identity, checkout behavior, and existing URLs—not to assume that changing the frontend automatically makes the store faster or keeps every plugin working.
What changes—and what should stay in charge
An Astro migration does not transfer your store or its orders into Astro. It replaces some or all of the customer-facing website while the existing WordPress installation remains the content backend and WooCommerce remains the commerce system of record.
- Astro: renders storefront pages, using static generation where suitable and server-side request handling where a page needs live data.
- WordPress: continues to manage editorial content. Astro’s Headless WordPress guide documents fetching WordPress content through its REST API.
- WooCommerce: continues to own products, carts, checkout, orders, and payment processing. Its customer-facing Store API is designed for product, cart, and checkout interactions.
The Store API is not an administrative API. WooCommerce distinguishes it from the authenticated WC REST API used for privileged store data; use the API appropriate to the task, and do not expose privileged credentials in browser code. See WooCommerce’s Store API guiding principles for that boundary.
Choose how much of the storefront to replace
A full Astro storefront gives you more control over the presentation, but also makes you responsible for integrating live commerce behavior. A partial migration can limit that work, while keeping the conventional WooCommerce theme avoids a headless storefront integration altogether. The right choice depends on your store’s checkout extensions, team workflow, hosting, and willingness to maintain the integration.

| Approach | Checkout and sessions | Runtime and maintenance | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Astro storefront | Astro’s customer-facing interface must work with WooCommerce’s live cart and checkout behavior. Validate the actual gateways and extensions you use. | Requires on-demand request handling for live cart and checkout behavior, plus maintenance of the API integration. | You need control over the whole storefront and can support custom integration work. |
| Partial migration | Commerce-dependent sections can remain in the existing WooCommerce experience while selected pages move to Astro. Define carefully where customer sessions and navigation cross between the two. | May reduce the first integration scope, but leaves two presentation paths to manage. | You want to migrate selected content or landing pages before replacing the complete storefront. |
| Conventional WooCommerce theme | Retains the theme-based WooCommerce checkout path and its existing integrations, subject to the store’s current configuration. | Does not require building an Astro storefront integration, though the existing theme and hosting still need maintenance. | Checkout extension compatibility and minimizing migration work matter more than changing the rendering architecture. |
These are architectural trade-offs, not a performance ranking. Astro’s documentation describes rendering and routing capabilities; it does not establish that a particular WooCommerce store will become faster after migration.
Inventory the current store before rebuilding
Document what the existing site does before changing its frontend. Record the current URL set, product and category paths, content types, metadata, canonical URLs, and redirects. Include media and campaign URLs that receive traffic or appear in external links.
Then trace a purchase on the current site from product selection through a completed test order. Write down the dependencies the new frontend will have to preserve:

Connect Astro to the right WordPress and WooCommerce APIs
Fetch editorial content from WordPress
Use WordPress as the source for the content it already manages, such as posts and pages. Astro’s official WordPress integration guide shows fetching WordPress content and selecting fields or embedded resources. If you choose a different content integration, treat that as an intentional architecture decision rather than assuming it is part of the documented REST API approach.
Use WooCommerce’s customer-facing Store API for storefront commerce
Use the Store API for customer-facing product, cart, and checkout interactions. Do not use it as a substitute for privileged store administration, and do not put administrative credentials in code sent to the browser. Keep WooCommerce responsible for the authoritative commerce state; Astro can display and submit that state, but it does not itself migrate payment credentials, WooCommerce settings, or orders.

Preserve customer cart identity across requests
A cart belongs to a customer’s WooCommerce session. WooCommerce documents cookie-based sessions and Cart-Token support for headless clients in its Cart Tokens guide. If the integration uses token-based sessions, carry the returned Cart-Token on subsequent cart and checkout requests so those requests continue to address the same customer’s cart.
Cart mutations and checkout require a nonce or a Cart-Token. Build the cart interface around WooCommerce’s returned cart state—including totals, coupons, and available shipping information—rather than treating a locally stored browser cart as authoritative. This keeps the displayed cart tied to the store’s current session and calculation results.

WooCommerce’s Checkout API documentation describes processing the current cart using customer billing and shipping addresses, a selected payment method, and any payment data required by that gateway. The Astro interface must collect and submit the information required by the actual payment integration; the existence of a general checkout endpoint does not prove that a particular gateway or extension is compatible.

Payment-provider redirects, authentication steps, and additional payment data are integration requirements to validate in staging. Confirm that a successful payment creates the expected WooCommerce order and confirmation experience, and that a failed or interrupted payment does not leave the customer with a misleading success state.

Astro supports static output as well as on-demand server behavior. Static generation is suitable for content that can be published at build time. A cart that must reflect the current customer and a checkout that processes a live order cannot be fixed build-time pages.
Astro’s server endpoints guide describes API routes that run on demand when the project is deployed in a server mode. Confirm that the Astro adapter and hosting environment you select support the request-time behavior your cart and checkout integration needs. A storefront can therefore mix static content pages with runtime handling for customer-specific commerce requests.

Migrate in stages and test the complete order path
- Record a baseline: capture the existing page routes and measure representative storefront pages under comparable conditions before changing the frontend. Without a like-for-like measurement, you cannot attribute a speed difference to the migration.
- Build the content layer: connect Astro to WordPress content and verify that the required fields, metadata, and page paths are available.
- Implement commerce against WooCommerce: connect product, cart, and checkout behavior to the Store API, including a consistent session approach and the required nonce or Cart-Token handling.
- Deploy to staging: use the intended Astro adapter and hosting setup, along with test payment methods, so request handling and gateway behavior are exercised in an environment resembling launch.
- Test store scenarios: cover guest and returning customers, address changes, shipping recalculation, taxes, coupons, stock changes, variable products, failed payments, payment authentication, order confirmation, and email delivery.
- Compare order totals: reconcile the amounts shown in the Astro storefront with the resulting WooCommerce order, including shipping, tax, discounts, and any other charges that apply.
- Verify paths and redirects: test old and new URLs on the deployed site, including response status codes and final destinations, before sending production traffic to the Astro frontend.
These are validation steps for a migration; they are not a claim that a particular store, payment gateway, or extension has already passed them.
Keep URLs stable and map any changes
Preserve existing slugs where practical. When a page must move, create an intentional permanent redirect from its former address. Include product, category, editorial, media, and campaign paths where applicable, and check canonical URLs and metadata as part of the migration.
Astro supports configured redirects and request-time redirects, with behavior depending on the output and deployment mode. Its routing and redirects guide documents those options. Test the actual deployed routes for the expected status code and destination; a redirect rule in configuration alone is not proof that the production environment serves it as intended. Preserving paths and redirecting changed ones is sound migration practice, but it does not guarantee a search-ranking outcome.
Measure speed instead of promising a gain
Replacing a WordPress-rendered storefront with Astro changes the rendering architecture, not the result of a performance test. Establish a baseline and compare the same important routes, devices, and conditions after launch. Include pages with different workloads—such as product listings, product details, and customer-specific cart behavior—rather than judging the migration by a static landing page alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that static rendering applies to the entire store: the cart and checkout still depend on live customer and commerce state. The useful question is whether the deployed design improves the experience on the routes that matter while preserving a reliable purchase flow.
