No—paying for a data removal service is optional. The FTC says you can submit opt-outs from people-search sites yourself for free, one site at a time. A paid service may be worth considering if you have many listings or want someone to handle recurring checks, but it cannot promise to erase your information everywhere or keep it gone permanently. California residents also have a free state option for requests to registered data brokers.
When a paid data removal service may be worth it
A subscription mainly buys convenience and follow-up, not guaranteed disappearance. It may suit you if you have found listings across many people-search sites, lack time to contact them individually, or would rather have a service check for new or returning listings.
If you have only a few listings and are willing to manage requests yourself, paying may not add enough value. The FTC describes the choice as opting out “on your own, one by one, for free” or paying a service to do it for you: FTC guidance on removing information from people-search sites.
How to remove listings for free
For people-search sites, the DIY route is to find each site’s opt-out instructions, submit the required request, and repeat for other sites. The work is site by site, so it can take time. Keep track of the sites contacted and check back for outcomes or listings that return.

This route is distinct from California’s DROP program, which is limited to requests to registered data brokers and has its own scope and process.
California residents can use DROP for registered brokers
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) lets residents submit one request to active data brokers. Brokers began processing requests on August 1, 2026, and the agency says they must process requests at least once every 45 days. See CalPrivacy’s DROP overview.

DROP uses information you submit to help brokers match you to their records. You can add details to your profile if a match fails or no record is found. CalPrivacy says submitted information is encrypted and hashed for broker matching; that describes the agency’s process, not a guarantee of zero privacy risk. The platform can show different outcomes:
- Deleted: matched, non-exempt information was deleted.
- Exempted: the information was not deleted because an exemption applies.
- Opted-out: the broker could not make an exact match but may stop selling or sharing the information. This does not mean the data was deleted.
- Record not found: no matching record was found.
- Pending: the request has not yet reached a final outcome.
DROP does not require deletion of information you gave directly to a business, public information, or exempt data. Public records can include vehicle or real-estate ownership and voting records; some patient health, credit, and financial information is governed by other laws. A broker may hold both third-party and directly supplied information, so a DROP request may remove only some data. What removal services cannot promise
Opting out of people-search sites does not erase the public records those sites may draw on. Your information can also remain in reports about relatives or associates, and listings may reappear when public records change. A service may handle requests and checks for the sites in its coverage, but that is not the same as removing all information from the internet or preventing every future listing.
DROP has its own defined boundaries: it targets non-exempt information held by registered brokers, not every business or every category of data. Neither route should be treated as a universal deletion tool.

How to evaluate a paid service
Compare the work a service actually undertakes with the effort you would otherwise spend yourself. The FTC recommends checking site coverage, whether the service provides a report, and how often it scans for reappearing or newly discovered information. Before subscribing, also ask:
- Coverage: Which people-search sites and data brokers are included, and what is excluded?
- Follow-up: How often are records rescanned, and does the service resubmit requests if information returns?
- Reporting: Can you see which sites received requests and what happened to each one?
- Information requested: What identity details must you provide, and how does the company say it handles them?
- Cost and cancellation: What is the current subscription price, when does it renew, and how do you cancel? Verify the terms directly with the provider.
- Free alternatives: If you live in California, compare the service’s broker coverage with DROP’s scope before paying for work the state platform may cover.
What a study of commercial services found
A 2025 paper, Measuring the Accuracy and Effectiveness of PII Removal Services, examined four popular commercial services and reported accuracy and coverage problems in the services it measured. In that study, 48.2% of successfully removed records were among identified records the services were unable to remove; participants judged 41.1% of records identified by the services to be personally identifiable information about themselves. These figures describe that study’s sample and methods, not all providers or the market as a whole. They are a reason to look for transparent coverage and outcome reporting, not a basis for ranking current services: the paper’s abstract.
