Give it access only to the files needed for the task, start with a narrow request, and review proposed changes before accepting them. Local execution does not guarantee that task messages and context stay on your computer.
Open your existing repository in Codex
- Sign in to the ChatGPT desktop app. Codex is a separate desktop view; choose Codex from the top-left menu. OpenAI describes the view as able to work with local folders, repositories, terminals, and developer tools. It is not a selectable view on the web or mobile. - Open the project folder. Select the local folder containing the existing codebase, rather than granting access to unrelated folders. OpenAI’s guidance is: “Open a local folder or project and grant access only to the files the task needs.”
- Describe a bounded first task. For example, ask Codex to explain how a particular component works, investigate one specific issue, or make a small change in named files. State the constraints and what a satisfactory result should include.
- Review before accepting. Inspect the proposed diff and any commands, then decide what to accept or run. Ask Codex to explain its proposed changes if the impact is unclear. The desktop guidance recommends describing the desired outcome and constraints, then reviewing the result. OpenAI Help Center: Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan.
Limit file access and start with a reviewable task
Can Codex access your local files? It can work with the local folder or project you open and the access you grant. Keep that scope aligned with the task: a repository-level explanation usually does not require access to unrelated personal folders or secrets. Avoid including credentials or other sensitive data in prompts.
For a first code change, specify the behavior to change, the relevant area of the repository, and any constraints such as preserving existing interfaces. Ask for an explanation of the planned edit, inspect the diff, and run or approve actions only when you understand their purpose. This keeps the first interaction easy to evaluate without assuming that a particular approval control or default is identical across app versions.
Know whether work runs locally or in the cloud
OpenAI distinguishes local workflows that run on your device from cloud tasks that run in OpenAI-managed environments. In a managed workspace, Codex Local and Codex Cloud can be controlled separately; availability may depend on workspace policy and your role. Local execution and data handling are different questions. OpenAI says messages and task context may be stored in the cloud even when the work runs locally. Therefore, opening a local repository does not by itself establish that all related context remains only on your computer. Review applicable account or workspace settings and policies, and do not put secrets into task instructions.
Use current sandbox and approval settings
Configuration names and support depend on the installed version. The OpenAI help article covering Codex CLI 0.149.0+ and desktop app 26.818.31338+ says approval_policy = "untrusted" is no longer supported in those versions. It lists sandbox_mode = "read-only" with approval_policy = "on-request" as a restrictive alternative. Project-level trust_level = "untrusted" is separate and remains supported. Do not assume older CLI instructions describe the current desktop app’s controls or defaults. The older CLI guide distinguishes modes that suggest edits and commands for approval from more permissive modes, but it is CLI-specific; use the controls shown in your installed desktop app and its current documentation. - Open only the repository or project folder needed for the task.
- Keep the first request specific, with clear scope and constraints.
- Inspect the proposed diff and commands before accepting or running them.
- Confirm whether the task is local or cloud-based and, in a managed workspace, whether your role permits it.
- Check current sandbox, approval, and data-handling settings rather than assuming defaults from a different version or workflow.
For organizations adopting the separate Codex Security product, OpenAI recommends beginning with a small set of repositories and dedicated reviewers, and reviewing findings and proposed patches.
