If you want an alternative to the OpenAI Codex app, start with your workflow: GitHub Copilot is the better fit to investigate if you want AI assistance across GitHub, an existing IDE, and the command line; Cursor is worth considering if you want a separate AI-focused coding editor. Neither is a proven overall winner here: the available official information does not provide comparative task tests.

This is a focused comparison of those two options, not a ranking of every AI coding tool. Plan details and prices below reflect official pages accessed October 4, 2026, and can change.

Which alternative fits your coding workflow?

Option Best starting point if you want What to check
GitHub Copilot AI coding help across GitHub, supported IDEs, and CLI, with cloud-agent and delegated-agent workflows described by GitHub. Your IDE and GitHub integration needs, model choice, agent access, monthly AI Credit allowance, and team governance. GitHub Copilot product details.
Cursor A separate AI-first coding editor with agent, privacy, and team plan features described on its pricing page. Whether you want to change editors, plus current agent usage, privacy controls, and team terms. Cursor plan details.

The distinction is practical: Copilot is positioned across existing development surfaces, while Cursor is an AI coding editor in its own right. Compare the day-to-day workflow you want rather than assuming that one tool will be better at every coding task.

What does GitHub Copilot cost, and how do credits work?

GitHub’s plans page listed these individual plan prices in USD when accessed October 4, 2026. They are product prices, not independent market statistics.

Pro $10 per user/month $15
Pro+ $39 per user/month $70
Max $100 per user/month $200

GitHub says agent mode, code review, cloud agent, CLI, and chat usage consume AI Credits, with consumption varying by model. A plan price therefore does not by itself establish how much agent work a particular developer can do: the model and the tasks you run affect credit use. Do not treat the listed credit amounts as unlimited usage or assume that inline completions follow the same accounting; check the live terms for the exact feature and plan you intend to use. See GitHub Copilot’s current plans and usage terms.

Can Copilot or Cursor handle multi-step work?

GitHub Copilot

GitHub describes cloud agents and delegation to third-party agents, including Claude and Codex, alongside its IDE and CLI assistance. That makes Copilot relevant if you want to delegate work as well as ask for in-editor help. Availability and use depend on the plan and feature availability, so confirm access for your account on GitHub’s product page and plans page.

Cursor

Cursor’s official pricing page indicates agent usage and team and privacy plan features, but the information available for this comparison does not establish exact current prices or a complete feature-by-feature account of agent limits. Check its current pricing page for the terms relevant to your use before choosing it.

How to choose without a misleading “best” claim

  1. Decide whether you want to keep your current editor. If GitHub and your existing IDE are central to your work, assess Copilot’s supported workflow first. If you are open to a separate AI-focused editor, evaluate Cursor.
  2. List the tasks you expect the assistant to do. Separate inline help from chat, code review, CLI use, and delegated or cloud-agent work. A feature’s presence does not establish that it is included in every plan.
  3. Estimate usage, not just the monthly fee. For Copilot, account for the credit-consuming features and model-dependent usage described by GitHub. For Cursor, verify the current agent and plan terms on its official page.
  4. Check organizational requirements. If privacy controls or team governance matter, review the applicable plan details directly rather than inferring them from an individual plan’s price.
  5. Confirm availability and terms before subscribing. Plan access, features, prices, and usage rules may change; the linked official pages are the appropriate place to verify current conditions.

What this comparison does not establish

The official pages cited here describe products and plans, not a controlled head-to-head coding evaluation. They do not establish which assistant writes better code, completes tasks faster, or is best for all developers. Claude Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, and other contenders are not compared in detail here because current primary-source feature and price information for them is not established in this comparison.
