MatterControl is free, open-source desktop software for preparing and managing 3D prints. It combines model editing and preview, slicing, printer profiles, and printer controls in one application. It does not include a printer or filament, and the exact printer must support a compatible connection and configuration before MatterControl can control it.
What MatterControl does
MatterControl is designed to manage much of the desktop 3D-printing workflow. The project describes an integrated MatterSlice slicing engine, an STL library, printer profiles, design editing, print preview, and tools for managing queued jobs and print history. During a print, it can also provide printer controls, software leveling, remote monitoring, and completion notifications. See the MatterControl project repository for the project’s feature overview.
The editor includes built-in tools and plugins for adding text, images, and braille to designs. The documented workflow also includes previewing and manipulating designs, managing multiple parts, and searching a design library. MatterHackers describes the application as free and open-source on its MatterControl product page; the project repository says development is sponsored by MatterHackers and its partners.
Is MatterControl compatible with your 3D printer?
Compatibility depends on the exact printer and how it communicates, not just its brand. MatterControl’s official FAQ identifies G-Code and S3G/X3G as supported communication languages. It describes G-Code as standard for RepRap and most other printers, and S3G as used by MakerBot and Flashforge. The printer also needs suitable slicing settings.

Speaking G-Code does not guarantee that MatterControl can directly control a printer. Some newer G-Code printers use intermediary boards that run web servers, which the FAQ says cannot be controlled directly by MatterControl. Confirm the exact model’s connection path as well as its protocol before relying on compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If your printer is not listed
A missing built-in profile does not automatically rule out using MatterControl. The FAQ says you can enter the manufacturer’s specifications in the printer and filament settings. You may need to configure and tune those settings yourself; use the specifications for your exact printer and material rather than assuming a generic profile is correct.
MatterHackers lists example printer profiles and broad support claims for printers using G-Code or X3G on its product page. Treat that as the vendor’s stated coverage, not as an independently tested, model-by-model compatibility guarantee.

How to get from a model file to a print
MatterControl’s getting-started material outlines a workflow that moves from choosing a printer to preparing and starting a job. Exact screen labels can vary by release, so use these as the task sequence rather than assuming an older guide matches your installed version.
- Select or create a printer. Choose a built-in profile if one matches your machine. If not, create a configuration using the printer manufacturer’s specifications and appropriate filament settings.
- Connect and configure the printer. Set up the connection and verify that the machine can communicate with MatterControl. Confirm the protocol and whether the printer requires an intermediary web service.
- Add a model. Import or select a design, then use the preview and editing tools to position or adjust it as needed.
- Prepare the job. Choose slice settings for the printer and material, then slice the model. Review the preview before printing; MatterControl also supports organizing jobs in a queue.
- Start and manage the print. Use the printer controls to monitor or adjust the job. Depending on the setup, documented features include temperature and movement controls, leveling, in-print adjustments, remote monitoring, and completion notifications.
The official MatterControl Quick Start and Getting Started manual cover the setup and print workflow. An older MatterHackers guide, MatterControl – Getting Started, was posted on December 18, 2015; use it for general context, not as proof that its operating-system requirements or interface labels apply to a current release.

What you need besides the software
- A compatible 3D printer: Check the specific model’s communication protocol, direct-control method, and available profile or configuration options.
- Filament: Choose material that is supported by both the printer and the job. MatterControl includes filament settings, but its documentation does not establish one material or brand as suitable for all printers or projects.
- Accurate machine and slice settings: Use the manufacturer’s specifications and appropriate settings for the printer and filament so the prepared job matches the physical setup.
How to decide whether MatterControl fits your setup
- Check the connection first: Find out whether your printer uses G-Code or S3G/X3G and whether it permits direct control by desktop software.
- Check the configuration effort: A matching built-in profile may simplify setup; otherwise, expect to enter manufacturer specifications and configure printer and filament settings.
- Match the workflow to your needs: MatterControl brings slicing together with preview, editing, library and queue management, printer controls, and leveling. Its official repository lists Windows, Mac, and Linux, but that listing alone does not confirm support for every current operating-system version.
- Verify the current release: The manual includes older material, and a vendor profile list is not a guarantee for every printer. Check the latest official download and documentation against your operating system and exact machine before setting it up.
For a specific MatterHackers Pulse setup, the company also provides Pulse software setup instructions.
