MinIO Client, usually invoked as mc, is a command-line tool for listing, copying, synchronizing, searching, and inspecting files and objects across local filesystems and object storage. To get started, install it for your operating system, configure a service alias with the storage endpoint and credentials, then use that alias in commands such as mc ls and mc cp.
What MinIO Client does
mc is MinIO’s command-line client for local filesystems and Amazon S3-compatible cloud storage. Its familiar command names include ls, cat, cp, mirror, and diff. MinIO says the client is built for AWS S3 API compatibility and is tested with MinIO and AWS S3 for expected functionality and behavior. That is not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every service that implements some part of the S3 API.

How to install MinIO Client
Choose the installation method for the machine where you will run mc. The official reference documents Linux binaries for Intel, PPC, and ARM64, a Homebrew command for macOS, a Windows executable, and source installation for developers or advanced users with Go. MinIO identifies its download page as the official binary source and says it does not officially publish mc binaries to common Linux package managers. Source installation does not support mc update.

Because installation instructions can change, use the current commands and platform-specific directions in the official installation reference. After installing, open a terminal or command prompt and run:
mc --help
The help output confirms that the executable can run and lists available commands.

How to connect `mc` to an S3 bucket
Before using an alias, obtain the service endpoint and credentials for an account with the permissions your work requires. The alias is a short name you choose for the storage service; later commands use it in place of the full endpoint.

mc alias set ALIAS HOSTNAME ACCESS_KEY SECRET_KEYReplace

For a MinIO deployment, check the connection with:
mc admin info ALIASIf the check fails, verify that the endpoint is reachable and that the credentials and user permissions are correct. This administrative check is for MinIO deployments; it is not a general connectivity test for every S3-compatible provider.
Avoid placing access and secret keys directly in a command if that would store them in shell history. MinIO’s example of temporarily disabling Bash history is only a basic mitigation and does not protect against every way credentials might be exposed. Follow your operating system’s credential-handling practices and avoid sharing command histories that may contain secrets.

Which `mc` command should you use?
Use the command family that matches the task. The examples below use ALIAS as the configured service name and BUCKET as a bucket name; adjust paths and arguments to the operation you need.

When to use `mc admin`
General object commands operate on files, buckets, and objects. The separate mc admin family handles administrative tasks for MinIO deployments. MinIO states that these administration commands support MinIO deployments only, not other S3-compatible services. Use the admin reference to identify the command appropriate to a deployment-management task; do not assume an admin command is available against AWS S3 or another provider.
Does MinIO Client work with AWS S3 and other providers?
MinIO tests mc with MinIO and AWS S3. Its documentation does not guarantee behavior with other S3-compatible services, whose implementations it describes as unknown and unsupported. A command may work with another provider, but that is not a support commitment from MinIO.
If you use a different provider, check that provider’s documentation for each required operation and test it in your own environment. Confirm especially the commands and options your workflow depends on; API compatibility in general does not establish that every command behaves identically.
Keep the client and server versions reasonably aligned
MinIO Client releases independently of MinIO Server. MinIO recommends using a client version released close to the server version—ideally on the same day or later—for best functionality. A newer client may run against an older server, but version skew can produce warnings or errors, and some features or flags may only be available or stable when versions are aligned. Check the current official reference and release guidance when a workflow depends on a newer feature.
