Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Active learning for text classification is a human-in-the-loop cycle: train a classifier on a small labeled set, ask a query strategy which unlabeled examples to label next, add those labels, then retrain and evaluate. Keras’s review-classification tutorial demonstrates that workflow on IMDB sentiment data, but it does not prove that active learning always beats random sampling or saves annotation time.
How pool-based active learning works
In pool-based active learning, you start with a small labeled seed set and a larger pool of unlabeled examples. A classifier learns from the seed set; a query strategy selects examples from the pool; a human annotator supplies their labels; and the newly labeled examples are added to the training data. The model is retrained, evaluated, and the cycle repeats until the results meet a chosen target or there is no more data to query.
The Keras tutorial calls the human-labeling role an “oracle,” defining it this way: “The oracle is an annotator that cleans, selects, labels the data, and feeds it to the model when required.” In practice, active learning does not remove human annotation. It changes which examples are sent for labeling.
What the Keras review-classification example demonstrates
Keras’s Review Classification using Active Learning, by Darshan Deshpande, was created on 2021-10-29 and last modified on 2024-05-08. Its experiment combines the training and test splits supplied by TensorFlow Datasets for IMDB reviews, giving a pool of 50,000 reviews. That figure describes the tutorial’s dataset setup, not a measured performance gain from active learning.

The example turns review text into integer sequences with Keras TextVectorization, then uses an embedding-based neural classifier for binary sentiment classification. It separates data for initial training, validation, testing, and the unlabeled pool. The model is compiled with binary cross-entropy and tracks binary accuracy, false negatives, and false positives.
How the tutorial selects examples
Rather than showing a universal query rule, the tutorial demonstrates a sampling setup that uses observed false-negative and false-positive counts to adjust the positive-versus-negative sampling ratio. It samples from class-separated pools, adds the selected examples to the training data, and retrains iteratively. The tutorial also discusses uncertainty sampling and mentions committee, entropy-based, and minimum-margin sampling.

Its split sizes, vocabulary settings, sequence length, batch size, and iteration settings are example-specific choices, not default values to apply to every text-classification project. The tutorial’s code sets the Keras backend to TensorFlow, but the page does not establish a current tested compatibility matrix for Python, Keras, TensorFlow, and other dependencies. Check the versions in your own environment rather than assuming the notebook will run unchanged.
How to choose a query strategy
No strategy is best for every dataset. Compare methods by the kinds of examples they select, how they build batches, what your model can provide, and the cost of labeling and retraining.

| Decision factor | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Uncertainty or informativeness | Uncertainty-based approaches prioritize examples the classifier finds difficult. Margin-based methods are one way to represent uncertainty; the Keras tutorial also describes uncertainty sampling. |
| Diversity and redundancy | A batch of highly similar reviews may provide less variety than a batch covering distinct parts of the pool. The Google Research active-learning repository describes k-center-greedy selection as choosing representative points to reduce the maximum distance to a labeled point. Its README says the repository is not an official Google product. |
| Batch or sequential selection | A batch strategy chooses several examples before receiving their labels; sequential selection can use each new label before choosing the next example. The Keras tutorial samples batches, and modAL documents configurable query strategies and batch construction. |
| Model and data compatibility | Some strategies depend on class probabilities, uncertainty estimates, or gradients. Choose a method supported by the outputs your classifier can provide. The available documentation does not supply a complete, current compatibility matrix. |
| Annotation and compute budget | Account for human review, model retraining, and the work needed to maintain a representative evaluation set. There is no general savings figure established for these methods. |
The Small-text paper is another reference on active-learning methods for text classification; it does not turn the Keras demonstration into evidence of a universal winner.
Evaluate the cycle without contaminating your test set
Keep a representative held-out evaluation set separate from the unlabeled query pool. The Keras example emphasizes careful test sampling and tracks false positives and false negatives. However, its sampling rule derives a class ratio from those counts measured on the test set. For a real project, repeatedly using final-test results to steer training or query choices makes that set part of model development. Prefer validation or another development signal for those decisions, and reserve an untouched final test set for evaluation.

Measure the outcome on your own data and against an appropriate baseline, such as random selection under the same labeling budget. Track the metric that matters for your application, as well as labels requested, annotation effort, and retraining cost. The Keras example is illustrative; it does not report a generalizable accuracy gain, annotation reduction, or proof that its query rule outperforms random sampling across tasks.
