Dotclear is open-source software for publishing and managing blogs on your own web hosting. It includes tools for posts, pages, media, comments, themes, plugins, and administration; it is not a hosted blog service. To use it, you need a web server with a supported PHP and database setup.
What is Dotclear?
Dotclear is a web-publishing application for blogs and related sites. Its official project materials describe an editorial and administrative system, not merely a text editor: users can create posts and pages, organize content with categories and tags, manage media and comments, and publish syndication feeds. Association Dotclear describes its aim as providing an easy-to-use tool that lets people publish on the web regardless of their technical knowledge. That goal does not make Dotclear a hosted service: you install and operate the application on a web server you control or obtain through a hosting provider. Review the project’s feature and administration information.
What can you do with Dotclear?
- Publish and organize content: create posts and pages, then use categories and tags to organize them.
- Manage a publication: handle media, comments, and site administration.
- Customize the site: use themes, plugins, and template customization to alter its presentation and functionality.
- Distribute and move content: use Atom and RSS feeds, along with import and export features.
- Manage more than one blog or user: the project documents multi-blog operation and user permissions. This is a feature capability, not evidence of a particular scale or performance level.
For a comparison with another publishing system, check the hosting and runtime requirements, available themes and extensions, editorial workflow, permission controls, multi-site support, migration tools, and feed support rather than comparing only the writing interface. What does Dotclear require?
The project README lists a web server; PHP 8.2 to 8.5 with the mbstring, simplexml, intl, and GD extensions and a suitable database driver; and one of MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or SQLite. These are the requirements stated in the project materials referenced here, not a guarantee for every release or hosting configuration. Check the live requirements for the exact version you plan to install before choosing hosting or upgrading PHP. Check the current README and requirements.
In particular, SQLite is among the database options listed by the project. Whether it is practical for a given site depends on the hosting setup and the needs of that site; the documented option alone does not establish performance or capacity.

How do you install Dotclear?
The project documents two routes: use an automatic installer through a browser wizard, or upload the extracted release files and open the installation route. In either case, first confirm that the hosting account meets the requirements for the release you intend to use, and follow the official instructions for current file paths and setup steps rather than relying on a potentially outdated installation URL. Find installation guidance in the project README.
- Choose compatible hosting. Verify the web server, PHP version and extensions, database driver, and database choice against the release’s current requirements.
- Choose an installation method. Use the automatic installer and its browser wizard, or download and extract the release archive, then upload its files to the server.
- Complete the setup in the browser. Follow the official installation instructions for the release to configure the application and database.
- Check the finished installation. Confirm that you can access the administration area and publish as expected; consult the project documentation if setup fails.
Where can you find Dotclear themes and plugins?
The project supports themes, plugins, and template customization. Dotaddict’s repository listing displayed 153 registered plugins when surfaced in 2026, with examples including accessibility configuration, antispam, media embedding, and error logging. That is a repository listing count, not an audited count of actively maintained or compatible extensions. Is Dotclear a good fit?
Dotclear is worth considering if you want an open-source publishing application that you host yourself and value its documented features: multi-blog operation, user permissions, themes and plugins, import/export, and RSS or Atom feeds. It is less suitable if you want a service that handles hosting and server configuration for you. The project materials describe capabilities, but do not establish independent adoption figures, comparative performance benchmarks, or user-satisfaction results.
Release listings can change: the official download index showed Dotclear 2.39.3 archives dated August 25–26, 2026, and an unstable-directory entry dated October 3, 2026.
