These ten practical Python techniques make everyday code easier to read and maintain. They focus on built-ins and standard-library tools for looping, transforming data, formatting output, working with files, and handling errors. They are a useful set to learn—not the only right way to write Python.
1. Use enumerate() for an index and an item
When a loop needs both the position and the value, enumerate() keeps them together without a separate counter to update.
names = ["Ada", "Grace", "Linus"]
for index, name in enumerate(names):
print(index, name)
Use this for index-plus-item iteration over one iterable. It is clearer and less error-prone than incrementing a counter manually. If you want numbering to start at 1, pass start=1 to enumerate(). The Python tutorial documents this loop pattern in its data structures guide.
2. Use zip() to pair aligned sequences
To process corresponding values from multiple iterables, use zip(). It expresses that the first values go together, the second values go together, and so on.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
names = ["Ada", "Grace", "Linus"]
roles = ["mathematician", "computer scientist", "kernel author"]
for name, role in zip(names, roles):
print(f"{name}: {role}")
This is for aligned iteration, not every possible pairing. By default, iteration ends when the shortest input is exhausted, so unmatched trailing values are not processed. If every input must be consumed, Python’s zip() supports strict=True in current releases; use it when unequal lengths should be treated as an error. See the Python tutorial’s collection looping examples.
3. Use dict.items() for keys and values
When a loop needs both a dictionary key and its value, iterate over .items() rather than looking up each value separately.
scores = {"Ada": 95, "Grace": 98, "Linus": 92}
for name, score in scores.items():
print(f"{name}: {score}")
The key-value relationship is visible in the loop, and the code avoids an extra dictionary lookup. This is the idiom shown in the Python data structures tutorial.
4. Use comprehensions for simple transformations and filters
A list comprehension creates a list from an iterable, optionally applying an expression or filter. It works well when the transformation is short enough to understand at a glance.

temperatures_c = [0, 10, 20, 30]
temperatures_f = [c * 9 / 5 + 32 for c in temperatures_c]
warm = [c for c in temperatures_c if c >= 20]
Avoid turning a comprehension into a dense collection of nested loops or conditions. If readers have to decode it, use a regular for loop. The Python Functional Programming HOWTO explains comprehensions alongside other ways to process iterables.
5. Choose a generator expression for on-demand values
A generator expression resembles a list comprehension but uses parentheses. It computes each value as iteration asks for it instead of building the full result as a list first.
numbers = [2, 4, 6, 8]
squares = (number * number for number in numbers)
for square in squares:
print(square)
Choose a generator when processing values on demand is useful, especially with very large input or a stream that may be unbounded. Choose a list when you need to index the result or iterate over the same materialized values more than once. A generator is an iterator, so once exhausted it does not automatically restart. The Python Functional Programming HOWTO discusses generator expressions and their use with large or infinite data.
6. Use f-strings for readable formatting
F-strings put expressions directly inside a string, making them a readable default for interpolating values. Format specifications after a colon control details such as numeric precision.

name = "Ada"
ratio = 2 / 3
print(f"Hello, {name}!")
print(f"Ratio: {ratio:.2f}")
For debugging, an equals sign inside the braces can print both an expression and its value:
count = 12
print(f"{count=}") # count=12
str.format() is also documented and can be useful when a format string is assembled dynamically. For straightforward interpolation, f-strings keep the values close to the surrounding text. The Python Input and Output tutorial covers formatting, and the built-in types reference documents string formatting behavior.
7. Use with to manage resources
Use a with statement for resources such as files that need predictable cleanup. The context manager’s exit behavior runs when the block ends, including when an exception occurs inside it.
from pathlib import Path
path = Path("notes.txt")
with path.open("r", encoding="utf-8") as file:
contents = file.read()
The with statement does not inherently swallow exceptions. Whether an exception is suppressed depends on the context manager. For a file, the benefit is that it is closed as the block exits. See the Python language reference on compound statements.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. Use pathlib.Path for filesystem paths
Path represents a filesystem path as an object. The / operator joins path parts in an operating-system-appropriate way, and methods such as read_text() simplify common file operations.
from pathlib import Path
notes_path = Path("data") / "notes.txt"
notes = notes_path.read_text(encoding="utf-8")
print(notes)
This example uses a relative path, resolved from the program's current working directory. Use Path methods such as exists() or is_dir() when the program needs to check a path before acting on it. The standard library's file and directory access documentation describes pathlib and related tools.
9. Combine set() and sorted() for sorted unique values
If the goal is to remove duplicates and display the remaining values in sorted order, combine the two operations:
values = ["pear", "apple", "pear", "banana"]
unique_sorted = sorted(set(values))
print(unique_sorted) # ['apple', 'banana', 'pear']
set() removes duplicates; sorted() determines the output order. This combination is appropriate when sorted output is desired, not when the original order of first appearances must be preserved. The Python tutorial presents the idiom in its data structures section.

10. Catch exceptions you can recover from
Handle an exception when the program has a meaningful response to that specific failure. For example, a command-line tool that reads a user-supplied integer can explain invalid input and ask again:
while True:
raw = input("Enter a whole number: ")
try:
value = int(raw)
except ValueError:
print("That wasn't a valid whole number. Try again.")
else:
break
print(f"You entered {value}.")
ValueError is the relevant exception for text that cannot be converted to an integer, and the handler gives the user a way to recover. Avoid catching every exception indiscriminately: unexpected failures may indicate bugs that should remain visible. Python's tutorial covers exceptions and cleanup as core language topics.
Which technique should you reach for?
| Need | Use |
|---|---|
| An index and item from one iterable | enumerate() |
| Values paired by position from multiple iterables | zip() |
| A dictionary key and its value | .items() |
| A short transformed or filtered list | A list comprehension |
| Values computed as iteration proceeds | A generator expression |
| Readable interpolation and formatting | An f-string |
| Reliable cleanup after a resource block | with |
| Object-oriented path construction and file access | pathlib.Path |
| Unique values in sorted order | sorted(set(values)) |
| A known error with a useful recovery path | A targeted except clause |
