It can also compare layouts and run scripted design-rule checks (DRC) and layout-versus-schematic checks (LVS)—but those verification jobs require appropriate rules, scripts, and, for LVS, a reference netlist. Opening a layout by itself does not establish that it meets manufacturing rules or matches a circuit schematic.
What is KLayout?
KLayout is a layout viewer and editor for IC and mask design. Its publisher describes a viewer mode intended for large mask-layout files, an editor mode with additional editing features, and an integrated XOR/diff tool for comparing layouts. The terms “fast” and “accurate” appear in the publisher’s product description; they are not independent benchmark results. KLayout’s product page describes these capabilities.
That distinction matters in practice: viewing or changing geometric shapes is different from verifying that a design satisfies a particular fabrication process or represents the intended circuit. DRC and LVS are separate workflows described below.

Gerber PCB data can also be read, but the manual qualifies this as requiring preparation; do not treat it as an unqualified, straightforward format option. Consult the file-loading manual for the details relevant to your installed version.
How do you run DRC in KLayout?
KLayout’s DRC is script-driven. A DRC script defines the layers and operations used to check a design; it is not an automatic signoff result produced simply by opening a layout. The official DRC basics documentation describes checks including minimum width and spacing, as well as geometric operations for overlap, enclosure, inside, and outside relationships.

Set up and run a check
- Obtain or create rules for the target process. A check is meaningful only if its rules correspond to the relevant layer definitions and manufacturing requirements.
- Prepare a DRC script. KLayout’s integrated Ruby interpreter supports control flow in scripts. The Macro Development IDE can be used to edit and debug them.
- Run the script against the intended layout inputs. The documented workflow supports multiple input layouts and hierarchical operation. Configurable tiling can use multiple CPU cores.
- Inspect the results. The script can emit results on layout layers or into a report database. Review reported violations in the context of the rules and layout rather than treating a clean run under unsuitable rules as proof of manufacturability.
For non-interactive checking, KLayout also documents batch DRC. The exact commands and interface details can vary by release, so use the documentation matching your installed version rather than assuming the current-master manual describes every older installation.
Does KLayout support LVS?
Yes. KLayout’s built-in LVS workflow extracts a netlist from the layout and compares it with a reference schematic netlist. The overview says SPICE-format netlists can be read; it also describes hierarchical analysis and customizable device recognition. LVS scripts are handled in the Macro Development IDE. LVS requires a reference netlist and suitable scripts or rules for recognizing the devices and connections in the layout. It is therefore a separate verification task, not a consequence of loading or editing a layout.

How to evaluate KLayout for a design workflow
Before choosing any layout tool, compare the specific requirements rather than relying on a general “best tool” claim. The KLayout documentation establishes its described features, but it does not provide a controlled comparison with competing tools.

- File exchange: Check that the formats you must import and export are supported for your workflow, and account for the preparation caveat for Gerber input.
- Work type: Decide whether you need inspection, manual geometry editing, scripted generation, or some combination.
- Verification setup: Determine whether process-specific DRC rules and the device and netlist setup needed for LVS are available and suitable.
- Automation: Consider whether Ruby scripting, batch DRC, and report or layout-layer output match your automation and review process.
- Scale and hierarchy: Evaluate the actual layout sizes, hierarchy, and performance requirements in your own workflow. The publisher’s speed description is not a substitute for a controlled comparison on your designs.
Which documentation should you use?
The official documentation index links the user manual, release notes, DRC and LVS references, scripting and API documentation, examples, and a PDF manual. The current-master manual identifies KLayout 0.30.12 and a 2026-10-02 documentation build; the file-loading page identifies version 0.30.12 and is dated 2026-09-25. These are documentation markers, not confirmation of the version installed on your computer. Check your installed release and use its matching documentation for version-specific behavior.
