“Free” in PCB design software can mean either software whose license grants users freedoms such as use and modification, or a vendor’s no-cost tier with eligibility and feature limits. Neither meaning makes the manufactured circuit board free. Check the license and terms against your intended work, then budget separately for fabrication and components.
Two different meanings of “free”
In free-software licensing, “free” is about rights, not just price. The license determines whether users may run, study, modify, and share the software, subject to its terms. Open source is related, but a no-cost download alone does not establish that a product is open source or grant those rights.
A vendor’s free tier is different: it is a no-cost offering governed by eligibility rules and product restrictions. It may be limited to personal, educational, or non-commercial work, for example. The practical question is not only whether the price is zero, but whether your project and use are allowed.
What the license does—and does not—cover
KiCad’s software license
KiCad describes itself as an open-source electronic design automation (EDA) suite for schematic capture and PCB layout. Its software is primarily licensed under GNU GPL version 3 or greater. The project states, “KiCad is free software.” Read the project’s license information for the terms that apply to different parts of the program.

Libraries and your design files
Software, component libraries, and the PCB design you create are distinct things. KiCad’s library data uses CC-BY-SA 4.0, with an exception: using that data does not, by itself, require your design or the files generated from it to use CC-BY-SA. The library terms allow use in commercial, closed, and non-commercial projects, while redistribution of the library collection is subject to separate requirements. See the KiCad libraries license before redistributing library data.
That distinction matters if you plan to sell a product or keep a design proprietary. Do not assume that a license applying to software or a library automatically applies to your design output; check the terms for each component.

When a free tier is limited to personal use
Autodesk Fusion for personal use illustrates a vendor-defined free tier, not the same licensing model as KiCad. Autodesk’s current personal-use comparison and terms describe a limited offering for qualifying individuals doing home-based, non-commercial projects. Its stated eligibility threshold is annual revenue of less than $1,000 USD. The offer excludes primary employment and company environments, and the comparison lists limitations affecting electronics and PCB designs, import/export, and support.
Autodesk’s personal-use FAQ says the qualifying offer has a three-year subscription term. Autodesk also says users who exceed its annual revenue limit or use Fusion for commercial projects must convert to a subscription. These are Autodesk’s published conditions, not a general definition of free software; check the live terms before relying on them, since vendor policies can change.

How to decide whether “free” fits your project
Before choosing a tool, compare the terms with the work you actually intend to do. A free tier that excludes your business use is not a free option for that project, even if the software installs at no cost.
- License rights: Does the license permit your intended use, modification, and redistribution? Is commercial use permitted?
- Eligibility: Is the offer open to any user, or only to students, educators, hobbyists, or qualifying individuals?
- Work restrictions: Are company environments, primary employment, commercial projects, or revenue above a threshold excluded?
- PCB capabilities: Do the available electronics features and any project, layer, or collaboration limits suit your design? Confirm current plan details rather than relying on old comparisons.
- Files and portability: Where is project data stored, and can you import and export the formats your workflow requires?
- Separate costs: Software licensing does not cover board fabrication, components, assembly, or physical tools.
Software cost is not board cost
PCB software helps you produce the design and manufacturing files; it does not include a physical board. KiCad’s version 7.0 getting-started guide describes plotting manufacturing files and says Gerber is usually the right format for ordering from a fabricator. You still need to account for fabrication and, depending on the project, components and assembly.
