After a break, I can lose about 20 minutes rereading my own code before I remember what I was doing. That is my experience, not a benchmark for programmers with ADHD. I built a tool to give me a starting point: the first line that helps me pick up the task again.

Why getting back into code can take so long

Returning to a programming task is not always as simple as reopening the file. I may need to reconstruct the goal, the recent steps I took, and how the code I am looking at fits into the larger task. Rereading is one way to rebuild that context, but it can consume time before I make any progress.

This kind of task resumption has been studied in human-computer interaction. In a CHI 2010 study, Robert DeLine and Chris Parnin surveyed 371 programmers about interruptions, suspending work, and resuming it. Participants reported relying on notes in several forms, suggesting that leaving context outside one’s head is already a practical strategy—not a personal failing. Microsoft Research’s summary of the study describes the survey and a controlled lab comparison of resumption cues.

ADHD research offers relevant context, but not a diagnosis of why my own returns take the time they do. A 2013 study of 37 adults—21 with ADHD and 16 comparison participants—reported group differences on phonological and visuospatial working-memory tasks, with the ADHD group recalling disproportionately fewer items as set size grew. It did not study coding, interruptions, or the time I spend rereading. These results should not be taken to mean every person with ADHD has the same experience. The study is indexed by PubMed.

What the first-line cue is meant to do

The tool’s purpose is to give me a breadcrumb when I return: a first line that can point me toward the place to begin, rather than making me start by rereading everything. The useful idea is not that one line contains the whole task. It is that a small cue can help me recover enough context to take the next step.

That description is about the role the tool is intended to play; it does not establish how the tool generates or selects its line, what editors it supports, whether it records activity, or how reliably it works. Those details—and any measured improvement in my return time—would need to come from the tool’s actual design and evidence. The roughly 20-minute figure here remains my personal estimate.

What research on programming cues suggests—and what it does not

In the controlled lab portion of the DeLine and Parnin study, researchers compared note-taking with two automated cues. The Microsoft Research summary reports that developers in either cue condition completed tasks with twice the success rate of those using note-taking alone in that study. The cues presented activity differently; participants preferred the chronological presentation of code snippets.

That result makes a resumption cue a plausible design direction, but it is not a promise that any cue will double anyone’s success rate. The study tested its own systems and tasks, not this tool, and it does not show that a “first line” is the best cue for every programmer. Its more practical lesson is that the form and ordering of context matter: a concise, chronological trace may help someone re-enter work differently from a pile of disconnected notes.

Ways to leave yourself a useful breadcrumb

You do not need a custom tool to try externalizing the context you will want later. A note, an IDE cue, or another reminder can all serve as a starting point; the cited programming study does not establish paper as better than digital notes.

  • Record the next action. Write a short instruction to your future self, such as the next behavior to implement or the failing case to investigate.
  • Preserve a relevant code snippet. A small excerpt can reconnect the task to the code you were changing, especially if it includes the point where work stopped.
  • Keep recent activity in order. A brief chronological trail can show how you arrived at the current state, rather than leaving you to infer the sequence from the finished code.
  • Choose a cue you can leave quickly. The best practical reminder is one you will actually create before stepping away and can understand when you return.
  • Consider persistence and privacy. If a tool captures code or activity, check what it stores, where it is kept, and how long it persists before relying on it.

These are practical options, not a proven ranking. The cue should fit the task and workflow; a reminder that is easy to create but too vague to use later may not help much.

ADHD experiences in software work are varied

A 2023 exploratory case study by Liebel, Langlois, and Gama draws on interviews with 19 software engineers with ADHD and discussions with four experienced managers. The authors discuss reported challenges involving task organization and estimation, attention to work, and interpersonal aspects, as well as strengths. They also caution that their findings do not establish that those challenges are specific to ADHD. The interviews are useful context for the range of experiences people describe, not evidence that all developers with ADHD work the same way or need the same tool. Read the case study on arXiv.

Where workflow-aware assistants fit

Tools that preserve work context are an emerging area, not a settled solution. A September 30, 2026 arXiv preprint describes Tether 2.0, an LLM assistant for software-engineering workflows that uses structured interaction modes, activity-aware context, and persistent memory. It reports expert feedback and hands-on use with one software engineer with ADHD. That is preliminary evidence about a different system, not validation of my tool or proof of broad effectiveness.
