You can use a reverse face search API to find public pages that may show the same face as a profile photo, then review those pages yourself. The Trace project repository documents a short Python example that submits an image, polls for results, and displays possible matches. A result is only a lead: it does not prove that a profile is fake or establish who controls the account.
What this checker can—and cannot—tell you
The documented Trace workflow searches for possible public-page matches and returns source URLs and similarity scores. That can help you spot a photo that appears elsewhere, but a score is not verified identity evidence. The repository recommends manual review; the sources reviewed here do not establish an independent accuracy rate for this API. Trace project repository
- A match may point to a reused image or a page worth checking. It cannot establish who uploaded the image, who controls a profile, whether the account is deceptive, or whether the photo was used without permission.
- No match does not establish that a photo is original. Publicly indexed images can be absent or incomplete, and similar faces or reused source images can make results ambiguous.
- Do not label a result “fake.” Use wording such as “possible reuse” or “results to review,” and let a person assess the linked source pages.
How the documented Python workflow works
The repository describes three stages: upload a photo, poll for the scan result, then reveal or display possible matches. Its example uses Python’s requests package and a bearer API key. Treat the implementation as repository documentation, not independently tested code, and check the project’s current API reference for endpoint details and required parameters before adapting it. Adapt the example safely
- Prepare a photo you are entitled to submit. Avoid uploading another person’s image unless you have a lawful reason and have checked the provider’s current terms and applicable local requirements.
- Keep the API key out of the script. Load it from an environment variable or another server-side secret store. Do not commit it to a repository, expose it in browser code, or write it to logs.
- Submit the image and retain the scan reference. The repository’s documented sequence starts with an image upload. Follow its current API reference for the exact request format and response fields.
- Poll for completion. Use the scan reference to check for results, following the provider’s current polling instructions rather than assuming a fixed response time.
- Present results for human review. Show each available source URL and score with cautious labels. Do not make an automated “fake” determination or take consequential action based only on a match.
The repository describes its output as public URLs and similarity scores, rather than names or personal records. That is the project’s description, not an independent audit of the service’s data handling or guarantees. Trace project repository

Why AWS Rekognition is a different kind of search
AWS Rekognition’s SearchFacesByImage operation searches for the largest detected face in an image against a specified face collection. The input can be image bytes or an Amazon S3 reference, and the image must be PNG or JPEG. Because the collection must contain faces indexed by the developer, this is not a search across public web pages. AWS SearchFacesByImage API reference
In practical terms, a developer-managed collection is useful only when the application has a legitimate, appropriate reason to search that collection and has populated it. It does not substitute for a public-page reverse search.

Face search is not a liveness check
Reverse face search looks for possible image matches within a search source; it does not establish that someone is physically present or responding live. A liveness assessment addresses whether an image appears to show a live person rather than a photo presented to a camera. That still does not prove that an online identity or profile is truthful. The Trace repository prohibits using its service to identify, locate, monitor, stalk, or harass people, and says not to upload another person’s photo without a lawful reason. Check the provider’s current terms and privacy notice, including retention and deletion controls, as well as requirements that apply in your jurisdiction.
