There is no single walking-navigation app proven best for everyone. For city walks on an iPhone, start with Apple Maps; for urban routes that connect with transit or need step-free options, consider Citymapper; for following a planned outdoor route, consider komoot. Google Maps is also adding Gemini-assisted walking navigation, but that feature alone does not establish better pedestrian routing. The right choice depends on your phone, destination, route and guidance needs.

Apple Maps: a practical iPhone choice for city routes
Apple Support says iPhone Maps can provide detailed walking directions and let you preview elevation. When available, route choices include avoiding hills, stairs or busy roads, and walking guidance can be spoken. Apple also describes augmented-reality instructions and indoor maps as part of its walking experience; availability varies by location. Choose it when you want an address-to-address walking route on an iPhone and its local options match your needs. Do not assume a particular feature is available in every region.
Citymapper: urban walking with transit and access options
Citymapper describes its walk router as using OpenStreetMap plus data on road types, surfaces, pedestrian areas, accessibility, transit stations and elevation. It advertises step-free routing and accessible station entrances. Its walking-navigation information also lists automatic rerouting, audio directions through headphones, “Fast” and “Main Roads” choices, and live progress sharing. It is a candidate for city journeys where you may combine walking with public transport or need to evaluate step-free options. Check local coverage and the details of each leg rather than treating an accessibility label as confirmation that the entire journey is suitable.
komoot: follow a saved outdoor route
komoot’s documented navigation is centered on saved routes: it provides on-screen turn-by-turn directions and optional voice instructions. Navigation requires unlocking the region around the route’s start, and automatic rerouting requires a stable internet connection. Consider komoot when the walk is a planned route you want to follow, rather than assuming its documented strengths make it a like-for-like replacement for a general map app’s address search.
Google Maps: Gemini-assisted walking is a new option, not an accuracy verdict
On January 29, 2026, Google announced Gemini-assisted navigation for walking and cycling in Google Maps, with rollout on iOS and Android wherever Gemini is available. That is a feature-availability statement, not evidence that Google Maps produces more accurate or safer walking routes than the alternatives. How to decide before setting off
- Match the app to the route. For a city address-to-address walk, compare local walking routes and options; for an outdoor walk you have planned, check whether the app supports following that saved route.
- Check your phone and location. Confirm the app and the specific walking feature are available on your device and in the destination region. Apple describes its cited walking functions for iPhone, while Google’s Gemini feature depends on Gemini availability.
- Check access and terrain details. If stairs, hills, surfaces or step-free access matter, inspect the route and its individual segments. Citymapper’s accessibility information is supplied by the service and should be verified locally.
- Choose your guidance mode. Decide whether on-screen directions are enough or you want spoken guidance. Citymapper describes audio directions through headphones; komoot offers optional voice instructions; Apple says spoken walking directions are available in supported regions.
- Plan for weak internet. If you depend on automatic rerouting, connectivity can matter: komoot explicitly requires a stable internet connection for that function. Preview your route and check what will remain available if service drops.
Is one app demonstrably more accurate?
No comparative accuracy result establishes a universal winner here. The available product descriptions explain features, but do not provide a controlled, same-route comparison or an independently measured pedestrian-routing benchmark. Treat app choice as a fit decision: preview the route, confirm local coverage and check that the directions accommodate the way you need to walk.
