Snapdrop is a browser-based way to send a file directly between nearby devices without emailing it to yourself. Open the same Snapdrop service on both devices, select the other device, and send the file. The classic Snapdrop project uses WebRTC for peer-to-peer communication, but a server still helps devices discover one another and set up the connection.

What Snapdrop does

Snapdrop is a Progressive Web App (PWA) for sharing files between devices through a web browser. The classic open-source project describes a system built with WebRTC, WebSockets, and a Node.js backend. It was inspired by Apple’s AirDrop, but it is a browser-based project rather than Apple’s built-in sharing feature. The classic Snapdrop repository

In ordinary use, open the same Snapdrop service on both devices. When each device appears in the other’s browser, choose the recipient and select a file. The receiving device must be available to accept it; Snapdrop is not an email inbox or a place to leave a file for someone to download later.

How a Snapdrop transfer works

The classic project uses WebRTC to establish peer-to-peer communication when the browser supports it. WebSockets and signaling infrastructure help devices find each other and exchange the information needed to start that connection. “Peer-to-peer” therefore describes the file-transfer path, not a system with no server involvement at all. The repository and the classic project’s FAQ describe these roles.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The separately operated snap-drop.net service documents a similar division for its own deployment: clients use a WebSocket for discovery and connection setup, then send file bytes through a WebRTC data channel. Its operator says the signaling server does not receive the file data and that its optional WebSocket file-transfer fallback is disabled. Those details describe snap-drop.net, not necessarily every Snapdrop fork, self-hosted copy, or LimeWire offering. snap-drop.net technical explanation

How to share a file

  1. Open the same service on both devices. Use the Snapdrop website or deployment you intend to use in each device’s browser.
  2. Wait for the devices to appear. Discovery depends on the service, browser, and network. On snap-drop.net, the operator says devices with the same apparent public IP are grouped automatically, which is why devices on the same Wi-Fi often find each other. That is not a universal discovery guarantee. snap-drop.net FAQ
  3. Select the recipient and choose the file. Follow the prompts in the sending device’s browser.
  4. Accept the transfer on the receiving device. Keep both devices online and the relevant browser pages available until the transfer completes.

Is Snapdrop like AirDrop?

They address a similar need: sending files between devices without routing them through email. The classic Snapdrop project explicitly describes itself as inspired by AirDrop, but the implementation is different. Snapdrop works through a browser and uses WebRTC plus signaling infrastructure; AirDrop is Apple’s device-sharing feature. Snapdrop’s compatibility and discovery depend on the particular service, browser, and network, so the comparison does not mean they work identically.

Privacy and security: what peer-to-peer means

The classic project’s FAQ says files are sent peer-to-peer and that WebRTC encrypts data in transit; it also says the signaling server is not involved in the file transfer. Classic Snapdrop FAQ The snap-drop.net operator separately says its WebRTC data channels use DTLS encryption and that its server handles discovery and handshake information rather than file bytes. snap-drop.net technical explanation

These are descriptions of the respective projects, not an independent security audit or a guarantee about every browser, network path, fork, or deployment. Check the specific service’s terms and privacy information before using it for sensitive files. On snap-drop.net, the operator says public rooms are temporary and that anyone with the active room code can join; treat an exposed code as public. snap-drop.net FAQ

Requirements and transfer limits

  • Both devices need to be available at the same time. The snap-drop.net operator says its service does not keep a server copy or mailbox for later pickup. snap-drop.net technical explanation
  • Browser and network conditions matter. The snap-drop.net FAQ says current mainstream Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari versions normally support the WebSocket and WebRTC data-channel features its deployment uses. This is the operator’s guidance for that service, not a guarantee for every device or Snapdrop instance. snap-drop.net FAQ
  • Available memory and storage can constrain transfers. Limits vary by device and browser. The snap-drop.net operator documents a rejection of iOS receive batches at or above 200 MiB for that client; do not treat this as a general limit for classic Snapdrop or other deployments. snap-drop.net technical explanation

Classic Snapdrop, LimeWire, and snap-drop.net

The names refer to related but distinct things. The canonical Snapdrop repository announces that Snapdrop has been acquired by LimeWire, says the repository will remain as-is, and says users can still download and run classic Snapdrop on their own infrastructure. The repository also describes a LimeWire-branded offering, but that announcement alone does not establish the offering’s current terms, operational policies, or every advertised feature. Canonical Snapdrop repository

Snap-drop.net publishes its own FAQ and technical explanation. Its statements about discovery, room codes, transfer behavior, and client limits apply to that operator’s documented deployment; they should not be assumed to describe LimeWire or a self-hosted classic build. Check the terms and privacy information of the particular service you open, especially if you need to know whether it uses accounts, retains files, or handles data in a particular way.

When Snapdrop is a good fit

Snapdrop is useful when you want a quick browser-based transfer and both devices can be present together. It may be less suitable when the recipient is offline, the transfer exceeds a browser or device’s practical limits, or you need a clearly verified retention or privacy policy. If self-hosting matters, the classic repository remains available for running that project on your own infrastructure; doing so means you are responsible for the deployment you operate.
