Its official overview lists support for PowerShell, Bash, Zsh, Fish, Nushell, cmd, Elvish, Xonsh, and Yash across Windows, macOS, Linux, WSL, containers, and SSH environments. “Any shell” describes its broad cross-shell design, but setup still depends on the shell you use and its requirements.
What Oh My Posh changes in your terminal
Oh My Posh is a prompt engine: it renders a shell prompt from a configuration rather than providing a new shell or terminal. The prompt can show useful context such as your current path, Git status, cloud context, or language versions. The official configuration guide describes the structure this way: “Oh My Posh renders your prompt based on the definition of blocks (like Lego) which contain one or more segments.”
That distinction matters: you keep using PowerShell, Bash, Zsh, or another supported shell, and Oh My Posh changes how that shell’s prompt looks and what information it displays.
Does Oh My Posh work with your shell?
The official overview lists PowerShell, Bash, Zsh, Fish, Nushell, cmd, Elvish, Xonsh, and Yash. It also describes use on Windows, macOS, Linux, WSL, in containers, and over SSH. For the current support details and the right initialization command, use the official shell prompt setup guide. Shell-specific requirements can change; in particular, check that guide for current Fish and Nushell version notes rather than relying on an old version list.

How to install and initialize Oh My Posh
Installation and shell initialization are separate tasks. First install the Oh My Posh executable for your operating system; then configure your shell to invoke it when it draws the prompt.
- Install for your platform. Follow the current official guide for Windows, Linux, or macOS. The Windows page includes WinGet and other installation methods; it notes that the Chocolatey package is community maintained and may not be up to date.
- Configure the shell. Open the official prompt setup guide, choose your shell, and add its specified initialization command to the relevant profile or configuration file.
- Reload the shell. Restart the terminal session or reload the shell configuration as directed by the guide. The prompt should then be rendered by Oh My Posh.
- Choose a theme if desired. You can start with a bundled theme or configure a custom one; theme selection is not a substitute for installing and initializing the program.
Platform details to check
- Windows: The installation guide directs users to configure a font, terminal, shell, and optionally a theme after installation. Treat the Chocolatey package as community maintained.
- Linux: The documented installation script requires
curl,unzip,realpath, anddirname. The guide says ANSI colors should work in terminals and notes that$TERMmay need to bexterm-256color. - macOS: Use the current installation page for package-manager-specific commands, then follow the font, terminal, and shell configuration steps.
How to change or customize an Oh My Posh theme
A theme is a configuration choice. In your shell initialization, you can use a bundled theme or pass --config a local configuration file, a theme name, or a remote URL. The customization guide explains the available approach and current syntax: Oh My Posh configuration.

For a predictable startup, the documentation recommends a local configuration file. A remote configuration needs an internet connection when the shell starts; caching is used, but the docs recommend a local file for performance.
Custom configurations can be written in JSON, YAML, or TOML. A practical way to begin is to export an existing theme and adjust its colors, segments, or icons instead of building every block from scratch. Do you need a Nerd Font?
A font with the necessary glyphs affects whether prompt icons render correctly; it does not determine whether the prompt engine itself can run. The Linux guide recommends a Nerd Font to display all icons. The theme guidance says themes with “minimal” in their names do not require one. Check the platform and theme documentation if symbols appear as boxes or missing characters.
