The original 21-editor list is a useful directory, not a current ranking: it was last updated on March 11, 2022, and its page is marked as needing an update. Its entries also cover very different jobs, from terminal editing to web and scientific document authoring. Use the names below as candidates to investigate, then confirm each project’s current status and Linux installation options before choosing.
How to choose a Linux text editor
Start with what you need to edit and how you want to work. MDN’s editor-selection guide, last modified July 8, 2026, suggests asking which operating system you want to use and what technologies you want to work with. It also recommends considering expected features, support, and interface preferences.
- Workflow: Decide whether you prefer a terminal and modal editing, or a graphical interface with direct-caret editing.
- Workload: Separate quick notes and configuration changes from programming, web authoring, and structured or scientific documents.
- Editing features: Check for the search and replace, navigation, multiple-document handling, syntax highlighting, indentation, and project or file views you actually need.
- Extensibility and help: Consider whether built-in tools are enough or whether plugins are important. Documentation and an active user community can make learning and troubleshooting easier.
- Linux installation: Verify the package available for your distribution and follow the project’s official installation instructions. Packaging differs among distributions, and some applications may require compiling from source.
These checks matter especially for an older roundup: its descriptions are historical, not confirmation that a project is still maintained, open source, or straightforward to install today.

LinuxLinks’ list contains the following names. This is the original set, not a claim that all 21 remain supported or are interchangeable choices.

Current example: Neovim
Neovim is a current example of why it is better to assess projects individually than to treat an old list as a ranking. The project describes it as a “hyperextensible Vim-based text editor.” Its official site documents Lua plugins, Tree-sitter parsing, Language Server Protocol (LSP) support, and compatibility with Vim’s editing model and Vimscript v1. The site identifies version 0.12 as stable at the time of writing; release status can change, so consult the project site for the latest information.

A practical way to narrow the list
- Choose the kind of work you do most: general text, programming, web authoring, or structured/scientific documents.
- Decide whether you want a terminal-based or graphical workflow.
- Write down the few editing features you need rather than selecting on a long feature checklist.
- Pick a small number of plausible candidates and check their official documentation, license, maintenance status, and package availability for your Linux distribution.
- Try the one that fits your workflow and support needs; there is no evidence here for a universal winner based on speed, popularity, or user preference.
