Start with the parts of the software delivery cycle that transfer across platforms: the command line, Git, automated checks, deployment, infrastructure basics, and monitoring. Then connect them in one small project instead of trying to learn every tool—Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Jenkins, and Terraform—at once.

DevOps is a way for development and operations teams to work together across building, testing, deploying, and operating software; it is not one job title or a required bundle of products. AWS describes it as a combination of culture, practices, and tools that helps organizations deliver applications and services at high velocity. Microsoft’s overview also places collaboration, source control, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, containers, and feedback within the practice.

What should a beginner learn first in DevOps?

Learn how to make a code change, track it, check it automatically, deploy it, and see whether the deployed service is healthy. That sequence gives you a useful mental model before you commit to a particular cloud or toolchain.

  1. Command line and code basics: Read project files, run commands, and understand enough of a small application to make a change.
  2. Version control: Use Git to record changes and collaborate. Source control also makes it easier to understand and recover from changes; Microsoft calls it a foundation of DevOps work. Microsoft Learn: What is DevOps?
  3. Continuous integration and delivery: Learn how a code change can trigger automated checks, produce a build artifact, and support a repeatable deployment. CI/CD is a workflow to understand, not a synonym for one product.
  4. Deployment and infrastructure: Learn what your application needs to run and how to make its environment repeatable. Infrastructure as code (IaC) manages infrastructure through code and software-development practices such as version control and continuous integration. AWS explains the IaC concept.
  5. Operations and feedback: After deployment, check service health and review logs or monitoring signals. Operating the service is part of the delivery cycle, not an optional topic that begins only after you have mastered every tool.

This is a practical learning order, not a universal syllabus prescribed by AWS or Microsoft. Your prior programming experience, operating system, budget, and preferred cloud may change how much time each step takes.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build one project that joins the steps

Choose a small web application or static site and keep the goal narrow: deliver a change and check what happens after it is live. You do not need to add a container orchestrator or multiple cloud services just to make the exercise count.

  1. Put the project in a Git repository and make a small, understandable change.
  2. Add an automated test or other check that runs when you update the code.
  3. Set up a workflow to build the project and deploy it to one platform you choose.
  4. Where it makes sense, record configuration or infrastructure in a repeatable form rather than relying on undocumented manual steps.
  5. After deployment, verify the service is responding and inspect available logs or basic monitoring.

This is a suggested exercise based on the documented areas of source control, CI/CD, IaC, deployment, and monitoring; it is not a tested recipe or proof of job readiness. If deployment requires a paid service, check its current access conditions and charges before using it.

Which DevOps tools should a fresher learn?

Learn the purpose of each tool category and choose one tool to practice in each part of your project. Names such as Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Jenkins, and Terraform are not a checklist every beginner must finish. A tool is useful when it helps you understand a stage of delivery or operations.

  • Version control: Git helps track and share changes.
  • CI/CD: A workflow service automates checks and delivery steps. Microsoft’s foundations path uses GitHub Actions as an example.
  • Infrastructure as code: IaC tools describe or manage infrastructure through code. Microsoft’s path names Bicep; AWS describes the practice more generally.
  • Containers and cloud services: Learn these when your application or chosen platform calls for them. Containers are one part of the broader DevOps picture, not a prerequisite to understanding version control or automated checks.
  • Monitoring and logs: Use the signals available on your chosen platform to inspect how the deployed service behaves.

The goal is to understand how the pieces connect. Learning several competing CI systems or cloud consoles before completing one delivery cycle can add terminology without teaching you how changes reach and affect a running service.

Choose a learning path without mistaking it for a universal standard

Official vendor training can provide structure, but each path reflects its provider’s products and examples. Compare the concepts and practice offered rather than assuming one vendor’s stack defines DevOps.

Path What the cited page says it covers Useful if
AWS DevOps Engineer learning plan AWS describes an expert-designed, self-paced plan with digital courses and a broader Ramp-Up Guide. It is intended to build capability to deploy, manage, and monitor cloud applications. AWS Training You want a structured AWS-oriented route and are prepared to practice with AWS services.
Microsoft DevOps training and foundations path Microsoft offers role-based training; its foundations path names source control, CI/CD with GitHub Actions, and IaC with Bicep. Role-based training · Foundations path You want a Microsoft-oriented introduction with named examples for automation and infrastructure.

Before committing, compare the path’s learning goal, the transferability of its exercises, and the subjects it actually covers—source control, automation, infrastructure, security, deployment, monitoring, and feedback. The cited pages do not establish a cost comparison or guarantee that practice access is free, so check current terms and charges with the provider.

What a learning path or certification can—and cannot—tell you

A course can organize study, and a project can give you a concrete way to explain what you practiced. The cited AWS and Microsoft learning pages do not establish that finishing a course, earning a certification, or following a particular path guarantees employment, salary, or job readiness. Treat those outcomes as dependent on factors beyond a training page’s stated coverage.

Measure progress by whether you can explain and repeat the delivery cycle: where code is tracked, what automated checks run, how deployment happens, what infrastructure is managed, and how you would notice a service problem. That is a more useful beginner milestone than counting how many tool names you recognize.
