Choose Plex if you want account-based remote access and are willing to meet its pass requirements for personal video on affected apps. Choose Jellyfin if avoiding software fees and keeping the server self-hosted matter more—and you are prepared to configure and secure remote access yourself. Neither is automatically the better option: the right fit depends on who will stream, which devices they use, and how much network setup you want to manage.
How remote streaming works in Plex and Jellyfin
Plex: remote personal video requires a qualifying pass on affected apps
Plex’s remote-playback requirements began on April 29, 2025. On apps updated to Plex’s new experience, remote playback of personal video requires one of three things: the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer has Remote Watch Pass. Plex’s currently listed affected apps include Android and iOS mobile apps, PlayStation, Plex desktop apps, Roku, supported smart TVs, web, and Xbox. A server administrator’s Plex Pass can allow other accounts with access to that server to stream remotely. Remote Watch Pass, by contrast, provides remote streaming to the account that bought it, with a stated exception for managed accounts in Plex Home. This rule concerns personal media hosted on a Plex server, not Plex’s separate ad-supported streaming catalog. Plex says local playback of personal video remains free. Jellyfin: remote streaming is possible, but you provide the route
Jellyfin is self-hosted rather than a hosted streaming service. To reach your server from outside your home network, you must configure a secure route into it. The official networking guide documents options including a reverse proxy, a VPN connection into your network, or a VPS reverse proxy. Although port forwarding is another possible route, Jellyfin warns: “Opening a port directly to the Internet is therefore insecure and not recommended.” Jellyfin’s networking guide
The extra control comes with extra responsibility: you manage routing, firewall and proxy configuration, user access, and the security of the server’s exposure to the internet. Jellyfin’s documentation also covers global and per-user external-access controls and the need to configure local networks and trusted proxies correctly.

What each option costs
Jellyfin says its server and official clients are free, with no usage fees, including for friends or company use. That does not make hosting cost-free: you still provide a server, storage, electricity, and broadband, and may pay for optional networking or hosting services. Jellyfin’s official site
Plex offers free local playback of personal video, but remote personal-video playback on affected apps requires a qualifying pass. Remote Watch Pass covers remote streaming for the associated account; Plex Pass includes remote streaming and additional premium features. Plex lists examples such as hardware-accelerated streaming or transcoding, DVR recording with compatible tuner and antenna, credits and intro skipping, and additional music features. Work out which Plex pass arrangement fits
- If only one viewer needs remote access and the server owner does not already have Plex Pass, compare the current Remote Watch Pass offer for that viewer’s account.
- If several people use your server remotely, check whether the server administrator’s Plex Pass would cover their access, and whether its additional features matter to you.
- Confirm that the viewer’s exact app is covered by Plex’s current remote-playback requirements.
Account for Jellyfin’s hosting and setup costs
- Include the hardware, storage, electricity, and internet connection you will supply.
- Include any paid VPN, VPS, or other network service if you choose one; none is required by the software itself.
- Consider the time and technical work involved in maintaining secure remote access.
Privacy: compare documented practices, not slogans
Jellyfin’s project website states: “Jellyfin has no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting your data.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent security audit. Plex’s June 2024 privacy policy says data transferred through Plex Relay is not stored except for temporary buffering needed to provide streaming. That statement is specific to Relay and the cited 2024 policy; it does not establish how Plex handles every type of data or service. The policy also describes processing metadata for functions such as account synchronization, metadata matching, and integrated third-party control or playback. Consult Plex’s June 2024 privacy policy and its current policy for the full scope of its practices.
The practical distinction is one of architecture and responsibility: Jellyfin emphasizes a self-hosted system without central data-collecting servers, while Plex uses account-connected services. Neither fact alone proves that a particular setup is secure or that all data handling is identical across products.

Plex fits better when…
- You prefer account-based access over designing your own network route.
- You are comfortable with a pass requirement for remote personal video on affected apps.
- You want Plex Pass features beyond remote playback, or the server administrator can provide Plex Pass access to other users.
Jellyfin fits better when…
- You want software with no usage fees and value the project’s self-hosted approach.
- You are willing to configure and maintain secure remote access, such as a VPN or reverse proxy.
- You want control over the server and its network exposure, and accept responsibility for managing them.
Before deciding, check the exact client devices your household uses, who needs remote access, and whether you are willing to maintain network configuration. Plex’s supported-app list and requirements can change; Jellyfin’s route depends on your own server and network setup.
