An old Ethereum exchange-outflow chart can change even though the transactions recorded on the blockchain have not. The ledger records transfers between addresses; analytics providers decide which addresses to classify as exchange wallets. When that wallet set is updated, the provider may recalculate historical flows using the new classification.
What an ETH exchange-outflow chart measures
Ethereum records transactions between accounts, but it does not mark an address as belonging to an exchange. A provider’s exchange-flow series is an aggregation of transfers involving the addresses that provider classifies as exchange wallets.
CryptoQuant’s ETH exchange-flow documentation describes daily average inflow or outflow in terms of the average transaction value for the day, and provides categories covering all, spot, and derivative exchanges. Its documentation also says historical values may change as new exchange wallets are discovered, added, and validated. When the provider changes the addresses included in its calculation, it can recalculate old flows without any change to the underlying transactions. CryptoQuant ETH Exchange Flows API documentation
Why an exchange wallet label can change
Clustering addresses
Analytics providers may group addresses believed to share control or a service relationship. Chainalysis describes Ethereum as account-based and explains that deposit-address-to-consolidation relationships can be used to cluster addresses associated with a service. This describes a general attribution challenge; it does not establish that CryptoQuant or Glassnode uses the same proprietary method.

Attributing a cluster to an exchange
After grouping addresses, an analyst or provider must decide whether the cluster belongs to a named entity. That judgment can draw on on-chain patterns and off-chain evidence, and it carries uncertainty. As Chainalysis puts it, “No amount of on-chain analysis alone can prove that a wallet belongs to a particular entity, because identity does not live on the blockchain.” Chainalysis wallet-attribution glossary
Consequently, two providers can classify different address sets, and one provider can revise its labels later. A changed chart does not, by itself, show that an earlier transaction was altered or that the old chart was “corrected.” It may simply reflect a changed set of addresses counted as exchange wallets.

How CryptoQuant’s update schedule affects its history
CryptoQuant says its ETH exchange-wallet data updates automatically every Tuesday at 00:00 UTC, and warns that the endpoint does not provide point-in-time accuracy. That schedule applies to the documented CryptoQuant ETH exchange-flow data; it should not be assumed to describe Glassnode or other analytics providers. The API documentation labels its API version 1.3.0, which is the documentation’s OpenAPI version, not a version number for its wallet-labeling model. CryptoQuant ETH Exchange Flows API documentation
The documentation does not quantify how large a historical revision will be or say that every old data point changes. It says values may change, particularly recent data points, as wallet information is updated. Treat a displayed value as a provider’s current calculation, not necessarily a permanent record of what that provider displayed on an earlier date.

Why different ETH flow charts may disagree
Before treating two charts as contradictory, check whether they actually measure the same thing. Compare these details:
- Provider and snapshot date: record who supplied the data and when you viewed or exported it. Historical data can be revised, so retaining the original snapshot matters for comparisons over time.
- Metric: total outflow, netflow, average flow, exchange reserves, and a change in exchange-held supply are different measures. For example, Glassnode’s cited chart measures the 30-day change in ETH supply held in exchange wallets, not a daily outflow total. Glassnode 30-day exchange-balance change chart
- Entity scope: check whether a CryptoQuant series covers all exchanges, spot exchanges, derivatives exchanges, or a single entity. Its documentation lists separate aggregate categories for all, spot, and derivative exchanges. CryptoQuant ETH Exchange Flows API documentation
- Wallet coverage: look for disclosure about missing or changing labels. Glassnode says its exchange balances rely on published exchange information and proprietary clustering, and may omit reserves for exchanges that do not disclose official addresses. Glassnode exchange-balance methodology
A difference between charts may therefore come from metric definitions, which entities are included, how many wallets have been identified, or when each provider’s data was captured—not necessarily from a disagreement about the blockchain record.

What an outflow does—and does not—tell you
An outflow indicates movement away from addresses the provider classifies as exchange wallets under its chosen metric and scope. It does not, on its own, establish who controls the recipient address or why the transfer occurred. The funds might be moved for many reasons; a flow chart alone cannot show that the sender intends to sell, accumulate, or move ETH into cold storage.
Providers and analysts may describe exchange flows as market signals, but claims such as “bullish,” “accumulation,” or “less selling pressure” are interpretations rather than conclusions proved by the transaction record. A chart also cannot establish future price direction. CryptoQuant ETH exchange-outflow chart

How to cite or compare a historical chart
- Save the snapshot: note the provider and retrieval date, and retain the chart or export if you need to show what was visible at that time.
- Record the definition: identify the metric, time interval, and whether it represents outflow, netflow, average transaction value, or a balance change.
- Record the entity scope: note whether the series covers all exchanges, spot exchanges, derivatives exchanges, or a named exchange.
- Include the coverage caveat: report any provider disclosure about missing addresses or changes to wallet labels.
- Describe changes narrowly: say that the provider’s historical series changed between snapshots. Unless the provider uses the term or an archived comparison establishes it, avoid calling the change a correction.
