AI-dependent coding is neither automatically a shortcut to good software nor inherently a mistake. The dividing line is how much the person building the software understands, checks, and remains responsible for—especially when other people will depend on the result.

What “vibe coding” means—and what it doesn’t

People use “AI coding” to describe several different practices. AI-assisted programming can mean anything from autocomplete to a coding agent, with a developer planning the work, reviewing changes, testing them, and maintaining control. Vibe coding is narrower: the builder describes a goal in natural language, iterates with generated code, and does little code review. The terms are not used uniformly, but the distinction matters: using an AI tool is not the same as handing it the work without meaningful checks.

In a 2026 ICSE-SEIP review of the literature, vibe coding is characterized by natural-language goals and iterative prompting with minimal code review. That approach can make starting a project feel easy, but it also makes it harder to know whether the result meets its requirements or will be maintainable.

Why people enjoy relying on AI to code

It makes experimentation easier

Instead of translating an idea into code from scratch, a person can describe desired behavior, inspect an initial result, and refine it through prompts. That can be useful for testing an idea or building a prototype. Research describes speed and accessibility as motivations, not proof that AI reliably shortens the full path to a dependable, production-ready application.

It can lower the barrier to making simple software

Natural-language interaction may help people with limited programming experience create a basic app or explore an idea. But generating an implementation does not ensure the user can explain what it does or detect when it is wrong. Novices may also find it difficult to specify constraints and edge cases clearly.

The process can feel collaborative

Microsoft Research’s 2025 qualitative investigation analyzed more than 190,000 words from interviews and public discussions, including Reddit and LinkedIn posts. It identified experiences of conversational co-creation and flow, alongside concerns about specification, reliability, debugging, latency, review burden, and collaboration. Those accounts reveal recurring themes, not how common each experience is among all AI-coding users.

Where AI-dependent coding can go wrong

Vague instructions leave important decisions unstated

A prompt can say what a feature should do while leaving out assumptions, limits, and unusual cases. In a 2026 study examining 163 developer–AI interaction episodes during the construction and debugging of a software system, researchers linked context gaps and communication breakdowns to functional errors. The case offers a concrete explanation of how mistakes arise; it does not establish their frequency across developers or tools.

Code that looks plausible may not fit the task

The same study describes examples such as hallucinated API integrations, faulty logic, and brittle behavior. A generated change can appear convincing in isolation yet fail when used with the wider system. These are reported failure mechanisms, not a quantified error rate.

Skipping review can shift work into debugging and maintenance

Generated code still has to be understood and maintained. Microsoft’s qualitative findings include debugging, reliability, and code-review burden among reported pain points; the 2026 review also connects minimal review with reports of fragile code and technical debt. A quick first draft can therefore leave someone with more work later if nobody checks how it behaves or how it fits the existing software.

Dependencies and security deserve particular scrutiny

One risk mechanism is package hallucination, sometimes called “slopsquatting”: a model may suggest a package name that does not exist, after which an attacker could register that name and a user might install it. IBM’s 2026 analysis discusses this threat and points to research on how AI-generated vulnerabilities may differ from vulnerabilities in human-written code. IBM is a secondary source for those findings, so its attributed statistics should not be treated here as independently verified primary results.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The available studies help explain how people use coding AI and where problems can arise, but they do not supply a universal verdict about productivity or safety.

Source and date What was examined What it supports What it does not establish
Microsoft Research, 2025 More than eight hours of curated video from extended vibe-coding sessions, with think-aloud reflections An observed cycle of prompting, scanning or testing, and sometimes editing code manually; expertise involved context management, evaluation, and choosing when to take control A universal productivity result or a measurement of how often generated code is correct
Microsoft Research, 2025 More than 190,000 words from interviews and public discussion Reported experiences and recurring themes, including co-creation, flow, specification difficulties, reliability, debugging, and review burden Representative prevalence rates or proof that users are always more productive
DORA, Google, 2025 Nearly 5,000 technology professionals around the world, alongside more than 100 hours of qualitative data A framing of AI as an amplifier of an organization’s strengths and dysfunctions That every team or organization will get the same outcome
IOS Press / SAGE Journals, 2026 163 developer–AI interaction episodes involving one developer using Claude Code during software construction and debugging Specific examples of context gaps, communication breakdowns, and functional errors A population-wide failure rate or a result that applies identically to all tools and users
ICSE-SEIP review, 2026 A review of grey literature on vibe coding Reported motivations, the distinction from deliberate AI-assisted programming, and concerns about fragile code, learning, security, and maintainability A universal checklist that eliminates risk

Neither the studies summarized here nor the secondary risk discussion establish a verified headline rate for how often vibe-coded software fails, saves time, or contains vulnerabilities. Treat broad numerical claims about those outcomes cautiously unless they are tied to a clearly described, directly examined study.

How to use coding AI without treating it as an authority

Verification does not guarantee a safe or correct result, but it makes the builder’s responsibility practical rather than merely rhetorical. A Microsoft Research study of extended sessions found that programming expertise shifted toward managing context, evaluating outputs, and deciding when to take direct control. That is a useful way to think about the human role: the AI can generate changes, but a person must judge whether they belong.

  1. Specify behavior and constraints. State what the software should do, what it must not do, and relevant edge cases. If the requirement is ambiguous to you, generated code will not resolve the ambiguity reliably.
  2. Inspect the proposed changes. Review what was added, removed, or altered and how it fits the rest of the application. Do not accept a change solely because the tool describes it confidently.
  3. Run the application and relevant tests. Check the behavior users will encounter, not just whether code was produced. Investigate failures rather than prompting around them until the visible symptom disappears.
  4. Check dependencies and sensitive operations. Pay particular attention to package names, permissions, authentication, and handling of data. A plausible dependency suggestion still needs verification.
  5. Keep changes reviewable and assign maintenance responsibility. Make it possible for a person to understand what changed and who will maintain it. Bring in a qualified engineer before deploying software that handles sensitive data or supports important operations.

These are reasonable software practices, not a checklist proven to remove all risk. The appropriate level of review depends on both how much the builder understands and what happens if the software fails: a disposable prototype has different stakes from a production system.

So, is AI-dependent coding the enemy?

No—not by itself. It can help people explore ideas and create prototypes, and qualitative research describes genuine enjoyment in the process. But natural-language prompting does not make software requirements complete, generated code trustworthy, or maintenance disappear. The more an application matters to its users, the less sensible it is to rely on unreviewed output.

DORA’s 2025 report offers a useful organizational lens: AI can amplify existing strengths and dysfunctions. A team that can specify work, review changes, and maintain software has a better basis for using generated code responsibly than one that already struggles with those tasks. The practical question is not whether to “vibe” or not; it is whether the human using the tool can explain, verify, and take responsibility for what ships.
