Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To control LDAP access, first decide whether you need to delegate operations under another authorization identity or place an intermediary in a proxy-and-replication topology. These are different designs: the LDAP Proxied Authorization Control changes the identity under which an operation is authorized; a proxy server can instead mediate traffic or replication. For OpenLDAP, proxy authorization is disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled by an administrator.
Choose the right meaning of “LDAP proxy”
“LDAP proxy” can describe a network intermediary or a proxy/replication arrangement. It can also refer more narrowly to the LDAP Proxied Authorization Control, which lets a client request that an operation be processed under a specified authorization identity. That control is not, by itself, a general-purpose proxy server.
- Delegated authorization: a service authenticates to the directory and requests that permitted operations be authorized as a selected identity.
- Proxy and replication: an intermediary retrieves directory changes and relays them to replicas, with referrals or chaining used to guide client operations.
Choose based on the behavior you need. If writes must be evaluated as the end user, delegated authorization may be relevant. If your goal is to distribute directory data or mediate connections, assess a proxy/replication design separately.
How OpenLDAP delegated authorization works
OpenLDAP controls proxy authorization with the authz-policy configuration directive and authorization rules. The OpenLDAP Administrator’s Guide, “SASL Proxy Authorization”, says the feature is disabled by default and must be explicitly configured by the LDAP administrator.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before configuring it, identify the service’s authentication DN and the exact authorization identities it needs to assume. Then choose the rule direction that most narrowly expresses the permitted relationship:
authzTo(source rule): defines which authorization identities a source identity may assume. This can make the service account’s allowed targets visible in one place.authzFrom(destination rule): defines which source identities may act as a given destination identity. This may be easier to review when the permitted sources for each target are the narrow set.
These are alternative ways to express authorization relationships, not a reason to grant broad rights. Compare which identity set is easiest to define narrowly, review, and audit in your directory. A rule may use a DN or regular-expression match, or an LDAP URL search; OpenLDAP cautions that a large search can make authorization checks take an uncomfortably long time and recommends indexing attributes used by such searches.

Secure the authorization rules and service account
A proxy authorization rule can confer substantial authority. If an untrusted user can add a permissive authzTo rule, that user may be able to authorize as another identity. Use ACLs to protect authorization-rule attributes, and do not let ordinary users write their own authzTo values when that would let them select a privileged target. ACLs can also constrain access to the proxy authorization controls themselves.
Limit where and under what connection conditions the privileged proxy client can use the facility. OpenLDAP’s configuration guidance gives an example that applies peer-address and security-strength conditions. Adapt those checks to the deployment rather than treating the example as a universal configuration.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Permit only the exact source and target identities needed.
- Protect the relevant rule attributes from unauthorized modification with ACLs.
- Restrict the service account’s permitted connection origins and security strength where appropriate.
- Test the effective authorization identity and resulting access against the target directory implementation before rollout.
OpenLDAP configuration directives are implementation-specific. Do not assume another LDAP server supports the same directives or interprets rules identically.
Require criticality for the Proxied Authorization Control
When a client uses the LDAP Proxied Authorization Control, it should set the control’s criticality flag to TRUE. The control OID is 2.16.840.1.113730.3.4.18. RFC 4370 states that clients “MUST include the criticality flag and MUST set it to TRUE.” If a server cannot process a critical proxy authorization control, it must reject the request. This prevents an operation from silently proceeding under an unintended authorization context.

When proxying replication is the goal
If the requirement is to mediate or distribute directory data rather than assume user identities, treat replication as a separate architecture decision. The OpenLDAP 2.5 Administrator’s Guide documents a standalone proxy example using syncrepl to pull updates from a provider and send them to replicas. That example describes read-only replicas and referral handling; clients can also use chaining, depending on the design.
This is one documented OpenLDAP architecture, not a universal prescription. Compare options by their intended function, write behavior, data freshness and replication direction, referral handling, and which identity is preserved in audit records. The cited documentation does not establish universal performance rankings.

Plan and validate the deployment
The configuration depends on the directory vendor and version, proxy implementation, operating system, network topology, and whether the requirement is delegated authorization or replication. For an OpenLDAP delegated-authorization deployment, use the 2.6 guidance; the replication example above is from the 2.5 guide.
Quick Recap
- State the required behavior: determine whether operations need to run under a delegated identity or whether data needs to be relayed to replicas.
- Map the identities: document the service authentication DN and every permitted target identity.
- Select the narrow rule direction: use
authzToorauthzFromaccording to which side can be expressed and audited most narrowly. - Protect and constrain: apply ACLs to authorization-rule attributes and controls, then restrict the service’s connection sources and security strength as appropriate.
- Set control criticality: for RFC 4370 requests, use the criticality flag with value
TRUE. - Test before rollout: verify both allowed and denied identity transitions, effective access, and audit behavior on the actual directory implementation.
