You can install a third-party launcher on Fire TV without necessarily making it open when you press Home. Sideloading installs the app; redirecting Home takes additional launcher-specific setup and may depend on your Fire OS version. The options below differ in customization, helper requirements, and documented compatibility, and the available sources do not establish a universal performance winner.

What “lightweight” means for a Fire TV launcher

A launcher is the interface that presents apps and, in Amazon’s case, can also surface catalog-integrated content and subscription status. Replacing or redirecting the Home screen may give you a simpler app grid or more control over its appearance, but it can also mean giving up parts of Amazon’s native interface. Amazon documents catalog integration in its Fire TV catalog integration documentation.

“Lightweight” is not established here by a controlled comparison of launchers running on the same Fire TV. One project publishes approximate memory estimates for its own app on a typical Android TV setup, but those figures are not Fire TV-specific benchmark results. They cannot show which option feels faster on your device.

Compare the launcher options

Option What it offers Home-button and setup considerations
TV Launcher A simple customizable Android TV app grid with optional features. Its developer reports approximate total PSS memory estimates: 25–30 MB with auto-update off, 30–40 MB with it on, 45–50 MB with Home override enabled, and 55–60 MB with cycling online wallpaper enabled. These are project estimates on a typical Android TV setup; the opened page gives no publication year. Home override is an optional accessibility feature. Sideload the app separately, then verify whether its Home behavior works on your Fire TV model and OS. See the TV Launcher project documentation.
Home on Fire Redirects the Home button to a launcher you choose. Project documentation reports Fire OS 7 and 8 support, but says Vega OS is unsupported and Fire OS 7 may show a delay. Setup requires installing the app and enabling its accessibility service or granting secure settings through ADB. Check the project’s compatibility and setup guide for your exact device.
FTVLaunchX A helper app for selecting another installed launcher; its project documentation describes routing boot, wake, and Home actions to that launcher. Setup involves developer options and ADB or an accessibility-related permission route, with instructions varying by Fire OS generation. Home does not exit an active screensaver, and the original long-press Home action is replaced by a button combination. Follow the current FTVLaunchX setup documentation.
LTvLauncher Offers visual themes, customization, app organization, and a built-in accessibility-based Home-button fix. The project documents a universal APK as well as architecture-specific builds. Check the APK and compatibility guidance for your device. Its guide also describes disabling system packages through ADB, but warns that doing so carries risk; it is not a routine setup step. See the LTvLauncher project guide.

The project links above point to project documentation, which may change. Confirm that the documentation names your Fire TV model and operating system rather than relying on a general “Fire TV compatible” label.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose based on how you use the TV

  • For a basic app grid: TV Launcher is described as a simple customizable grid. Its optional features can add both functionality and memory use, but its published estimates are not comparable Fire TV tests.
  • For Home-button redirection: Home on Fire documents a direct route for Fire OS 7 and 8; FTVLaunchX offers a helper-based approach. Verify OS-specific directions before granting permissions or following commands.
  • For more visual control: LTvLauncher documents themes and app organization. Its package-disabling method is advanced and carries a stated system-package risk.
  • If you rely on Amazon’s catalog interface: Consider whether you want to retain the stock launcher’s integrated catalog and subscription-status presentation before redirecting Home.

Install the app and redirect Home as separate tasks

Amazon defines installing an app outside its Appstore as “sideloading.” Its developer documentation explains ADB installation, but does not document a universal method for replacing the Fire TV Home screen. After installation, the sideloaded app can appear in Recent and My Library, and Amazon says it can be launched from Settings under Manage Installed Applications. See Amazon’s Install and Run Your App (Fire TV) guide.

  1. Check your Fire TV model and OS. Use the device’s system information to identify the exact model and Fire OS generation. Compatibility and permission steps differ, and Home on Fire’s project documentation does not support Vega OS.
  2. Choose an installation route supported by your device. Amazon documents connecting a computer to Fire TV through ADB, then installing an APK with adb install <path-to-apk-file>. Home on Fire also documents sideloading on the TV and USB transfer on certain devices. Its guide lists USB transfer for Fire TV Cube, some Fire TV televisions, and Sticks used with a USB-OTG adapter; it is not a universal Stick method. Downloader is another listed way to move the APK to Sticks without USB.
  3. Install the launcher APK. Follow the project’s current instructions and choose the correct build where architecture-specific APKs are offered. Amazon’s ADB instructions cover installation, not setting the new app as the Home destination.
  4. Configure Home behavior using the launcher’s own guide. Home on Fire requires enabling its accessibility service or granting secure settings through ADB, then selecting a target launcher. FTVLaunchX’s guide calls for enabling ADB debugging and unknown sources, installing the APK, granting WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS or following the applicable accessibility route, and selecting a launcher. Do not copy commands across Fire OS generations without checking the matching instructions.
  5. Test the remote and return path. Try Home, wake, screensaver behavior, and any long-press Home action you use before relying on the setup. FTVLaunchX documents the screensaver and long-press limitations noted above.

Permission and recovery considerations

Accessibility services and secure-settings permissions allow helper apps to affect system behavior beyond simply displaying an app grid. Grant only what the chosen project’s instructions require, and understand its Home-button behavior before enabling it. Avoid disabling Amazon system packages as a casual shortcut: LTvLauncher’s own guide warns that this advanced ADB method carries risk.

If the launcher installs but Home still opens Amazon’s interface, the likely distinction is that installation succeeded while redirection was not configured or is unsupported on that device/OS combination. Recheck the launcher’s current compatibility guide and the required accessibility or ADB setup. If you prefer not to grant those permissions, you can still launch a sideloaded app from Manage Installed Applications rather than redirecting Home.
