Pure Storage announced FlashArray//E on June 14, 2023, as an all-flash system for large, capacity-oriented block and file repositories such as archives, snapshot retention, content libraries and backup. Pure’s launch release claimed lower power, space and operating costs than disk storage, but those figures are vendor comparisons—not independent test results. The “multi-year leadership advantage” wording appeared in a separate announcement about FlashArray//X and FlashArray//C, not in the reviewed FlashArray//E launch release.

What is FlashArray//E designed to do?

FlashArray//E is part of Pure Storage’s FlashArray family. Its launch extended the Pure//E line to unified block and file storage for large data repositories. Pure positions it for capacity-heavy uses—including archives, snapshots, content libraries and backup that is not performance-intensive—rather than as a solution aimed primarily at demanding, latency-sensitive workloads. The current FlashArray family data sheet describes those use cases and calls the system price-competitive with HDD-based systems.

Pure announced the array on June 14, 2023; its FY2024 filing later said it was released in November 2023. Announcement and release are distinct dates.

What does “multi-year advantage” mean here?

The phrase needs a product-family distinction. Pure’s June 2023 FlashArray//E launch announcement does not make the specific “multi-year advantage” claim for FlashArray//E. A separate announcement for fourth-generation FlashArray//X and FlashArray//C said those products extended Pure’s “multi-year leadership advantage.” That is Pure’s positioning for those products, not an independently established finding about FlashArray//E. See the FlashArray//X and FlashArray//C announcement and the FlashArray//E launch release.

What performance and efficiency figures did Pure claim?

In its June 14, 2023 launch release, Pure compared FlashArray//E with legacy storage and disk, making the following claims. These are vendor-reported comparisons; the release does not present them as independent, like-for-like test results.

Launch claim Pure Storage’s stated comparison
8× higher density Compared with legacy storage
3× more terabytes per watt Compared with legacy storage
7× lower drive failure rates Compared with legacy storage
80% less power and space Compared with disk
60% lower operational costs Compared with disk
85% less e-waste Compared with disk
Five times less energy Compared with HDD

The launch release also described Pure//E as costing under $0.20 per GB with three years of support. That is a dated launch statement, not a current price quote; buyers should request pricing for the configuration, capacity and support term they need. The claims and qualification are in Pure Storage’s launch release; its FY2026 filing repeats the 80%, 60% and 85% comparisons with disk (SEC filing).

What ENERGY STAR establishes

ENERGY STAR lists FlashArray//E as certified in the United States and Canada. Its record reports sequential streaming workload readings of 2.31 MiB/s/W for read and 0.99 MiB/s/W for write, captured August 14, 2026. Those are workload-specific measurements, not a direct comparison with HDD power use or proof of a particular savings percentage. See the ENERGY STAR certification record.

How much capacity does FlashArray//E support?

Published maximum-capacity figures differ by source and date. The FlashArray family data sheet retrieved October 4, 2026 lists FlashArray//E at up to 6 PB; Pure’s FY2026 SEC filing describes it as serving repositories up to 4 PB. These should be read as document-specific figures, not combined into one definitive maximum. Confirm the supported capacity and configuration with Pure for the system being quoted.

How should buyers compare it with disk or hybrid storage?

FlashArray//E’s efficiency claims are useful as a reason to investigate, but a buyer’s result depends on the actual workload, configuration and commercial terms. Compare alternatives against the same requirements rather than relying on headline ratios alone.

  • Total cost: Compare the usable capacity, support term, software or subscription charges, and operating costs in each proposal. Do not treat Pure’s 2023 under-$0.20-per-GB statement as a current quote.
  • Power and footprint: Ask for estimates based on the same workload, capacity and operating assumptions for each option.
  • Workload needs: Establish the required latency and throughput, and whether the data is suitable for capacity-oriented storage rather than a performance-intensive system.
  • Recovery and availability: Check expected restore times and availability requirements for backup and archive data.
  • Data reduction: Confirm the assumptions behind usable-capacity figures, since data reduction affects how much data a system can hold.
  • Access and growth: Verify required block and file protocols, capacity headroom and the upgrade path.
  • Support terms: Compare coverage and duration on equivalent terms.

What the claims do—and do not—show

Pure’s launch figures make a case for evaluating FlashArray//E where large repositories and energy or space constraints matter. They do not, by themselves, establish the savings a particular organization will realize against its existing disk or hybrid infrastructure. The ENERGY STAR record adds certified, workload-specific efficiency readings, but it does not supply a disk comparison. For a purchase decision, request a configuration-specific proposal and compare it with alternatives under the same capacity, workload and support assumptions.
