For modern encrypted Word files, PowerShell can call Microsoft’s .NET EncryptedPackageEnvelope.IsEncryptedPackageEnvelope method to check whether a file contains an encrypted Office package. This detects a specific package-level condition; it is not a universal test for every Word password or editing restriction. Decide whether you mean a password required to open a document or any kind of protection before you scan.
What counts as a password-protected Word document?
A password required to open a document is different from a setting that recommends read-only access or restricts editing. Word automation exposes an open-password parameter named PasswordDocument for Documents.Open. Microsoft’s documentation describes that parameter and cautions against hard-coding passwords: Word Documents.Open method.
For an inventory, define the result you need: files encrypted so they require a password to open, or files with any password-related editing restriction. The encrypted-package method below addresses the former for applicable modern Office packages; it does not establish all Word protection states.
What PowerShell can detect in modern Word files
Microsoft documents EncryptedPackageEnvelope.IsEncryptedPackageEnvelope(String) as checking whether a file is an OLE compound file with an encrypted package stream. That is the basis for identifying modern encrypted Office Open XML packages, such as some password-to-open .docx files. See Microsoft’s EncryptedPackageEnvelope.IsEncryptedPackageEnvelope API documentation.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Do not decide based on the file extension. Office native encryption can preserve the document’s existing extension, so an encrypted Word document may still end in .docx. Microsoft describes that behavior in its documentation on configuring file types for extraction and in its Office cryptography specification.
Choose a detection method by document type
| Case | What the method establishes | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
Modern encrypted Office Open XML, such as a password-to-open .docx |
Microsoft’s API checks for an OLE compound file containing an encrypted package stream. | Use package-level detection; extension alone cannot confirm or rule out encryption. |
Legacy Word .doc |
Microsoft documents separate password-to-open encryption and obfuscation mechanisms for the binary format. | Track as a separate legacy case; do not treat the encrypted-package check as universal. |
| Password-based write protection or editing restrictions | Word binary write protection does not itself encrypt the document. | Keep editing restrictions separate from password-to-open encryption in reports. |
The format distinctions are documented in Microsoft’s Word binary file format specification and its Office cryptography write-protection specification.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Build a reliable inventory in PowerShell
- Set the scope. Decide whether your report is for files that require a password to open, or for all password-related restrictions. Keep those categories distinct.
- Enumerate candidates by extension. Use extensions such as
.docxto select likely Word files, not to declare them protected or unprotected. Native encryption can leave an Office extension unchanged. - Check modern encrypted packages. Call
EncryptedPackageEnvelope.IsEncryptedPackageEnvelopefor each candidate in an environment where the required packaging assembly is available. Report a positive match, a negative result, and an error as separate outcomes. - Route legacy files separately. Flag
.docfiles for a legacy-specific check rather than claiming the modern package test covers them all. - Keep inspection read-only. If you use the Open XML SDK for additional package inspection, its documentation supports opening a Word document read-only: Open a Word processing document for read-only access.
The API approach is grounded in Microsoft’s documented .NET method, but Microsoft’s cited documentation does not provide a universal PowerShell script or a compatibility matrix for PowerShell editions and .NET runtimes. Check that the API and its required assembly are available on the target system, then verify the method’s behavior there before relying on an automated inventory. Do not assume an Add-Type or Assembly.Load line works across all installations.
Report results without overstating them
- Encrypted package detected: the API reports an encrypted package envelope.
- No encrypted package detected: the API did not find the specific encrypted-package structure it checks; this is not proof that the file has no editing restrictions or other protection.
- Needs legacy-specific review: a
.docfile may use mechanisms outside the modern package check. - Error or unsupported environment: the file could not be checked or the required API was unavailable. Do not silently classify it as unprotected.
Opening every file through interactive Word automation is not a good default for a bulk inventory: it can introduce password prompts and automation errors. If a specialized legacy workflow requires Word automation, handle prompts and errors and close each document safely; Microsoft documents password arguments for Documents.Open and warns against hard-coded passwords.
