A chat template can render without an error and still give a model the wrong prompt. It converts structured messages into the model’s expected control-token sequence, so a mismatch in role markers, end tokens, whitespace, or generation headers can degrade responses or break tool and multimodal workflows. Start by inspecting the template actually loaded for the checkpoint, then compare a rendered example with that model’s expected format.
Why a valid template can still be wrong
Chat templates serialize messages—typically dictionaries with a role and content—into the token pattern a model expects. That pattern is model-specific: Hugging Face’s examples show different conventions for Mistral-7B-Instruct and Zephyr. A template that parses successfully is not necessarily compatible with the checkpoint or its training format. Hugging Face advises that the template match the format used to train the model; incorrect control tokens can substantially reduce performance. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates
Diagnosis also depends on where formatting happens. Transformers, an inference server, and a user interface may load or select templates differently. The Hugging Face documentation cited here establishes Transformers behavior; it does not establish universal behavior for every serving runtime.
Debug the active template in this order
- Record the exact setup. Note the model repository or checkpoint, Transformers version, serving runtime and version, and whether the tokenizer, processor, UI, or server formats the messages. This makes it possible to distinguish a model-format mismatch from a runtime or loading difference.
- Inspect what is actually loaded. In Transformers, inspect
tokenizer.chat_template; for multimodal models, inspect the processor as well. If the API supports named templates, identify which one it selected. Transformers recommends inspecting the template and testing it withapply_chat_template. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates Tokenizer API - Render a minimal representative conversation. Use the roles involved in the failure, and pass the tools argument if reproducing tool use. For multimodal inputs, include the real content-item shape. Read the rendered sequence for role markers, separators, end tokens, and the final assistant prefix—not just whether rendering completed.
- Compare against the checkpoint’s expected format. Check the exact control tokens and message boundaries, not merely whether the prompt looks readable. A different model’s template may be syntactically valid but incompatible with this checkpoint’s training format. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates Writing a chat template
- Check whitespace and tokenization. Jinja indentation and newlines can become literal prompt content. If you render a template to text and then tokenize that text separately, make sure tokenization does not add a second set of special tokens already present in the rendering.
- Verify how generation should begin. Confirm whether the template needs an assistant header before generation, and use the corresponding generation option only if it does.
- Check file precedence and task selection. Confirm the path and named template the runtime loaded rather than assuming it used the file you edited.
- Keep regression examples. Save rendered cases for ordinary chat, assistant-prefill continuation, tool calls, and multimodal messages when applicable. Re-render them after changing the checkpoint, tokenizer or processor, Transformers, or serving runtime. This is a practical debugging safeguard, not a stated Hugging Face requirement.
Fix generation-marker and tokenization problems
Assistant header missing or misplaced
add_generation_prompt appends an assistant-generation header when the template and model convention call for one. If that header is required but absent, generation may continue the user’s message or otherwise produce degraded output. Some formats do not need a separate header, so do not enable the option by habit; inspect the rendered prompt and confirm the model’s convention first. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Continuing an assistant prefill
If the final message is an intentionally unfinished assistant prefix that the model should continue, use continue_final_message for that purpose. Do not combine it with add_generation_prompt: the two options describe incompatible ways of preparing the end of the prompt. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates
Special tokens added twice
A rendered template may already contain the model’s special tokens. If you then tokenize the rendered text separately with automatic special-token insertion, another set may be added. Compare the rendered text and token IDs with what the model expects, and avoid adding a second layer of special tokens. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates

Fix Jinja errors and unwanted whitespace
Render or parse exception
Check the reported template line, Jinja syntax, and the types and fields of the messages supplied. A template may assume content is a string or that a particular field exists, while the actual input has another shape. Keeping a long template in its own .jinja file can make line references more useful. Writing a chat template
Unexpected spaces or newlines
Jinja block indentation and line breaks can leak into the rendered prompt. Use whitespace control deliberately, then inspect the complete output—including invisible whitespace between control tokens. Hugging Face recommends using - to ensure only intended content is printed. Writing a chat template

Fix template loading and tool-selection problems
A template file appears to be ignored
In current Transformers documentation, a standalone root-level chat_template.jinja takes precedence over an embedded legacy template setting. Modern saved configurations use that file for a single template; named alternatives can be stored under additional_chat_templates/. For the exact precedence behavior, check the Transformers version in use because storage details can change. Writing a chat template
The versioned Transformers v4.48.1 API documentation also describes the chat-template API; consult the documentation matching your installed version when diagnosing older deployments. Transformers v4.48.1 tokenizer API

Normal chat works but tool calls fail
Tool calling may use a named tool_use template rather than the ordinary chat template. Check whether such a template exists and whether the API selected it when tools were passed. Render a minimal request with the same tools argument as the failing call; a successful plain-chat render does not verify tool formatting. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates Writing a chat template
Fix image and video prompt issues
For multimodal models, the processor—not just the tokenizer—owns the template and handles modality-specific token expansion after rendering. Message content may be a list of content items rather than one string. Inspect the processor, pass the expected list-shaped content, and verify that the rendered request uses the model’s appropriate modality markers. A text-only template check cannot establish that image or video input is shaped correctly. Hugging Face Transformers: Chat templates
