iTop is an open-source, web-based IT service-management (ITSM) platform built around a configurable configuration management database (CMDB). It connects infrastructure records and their relationships to service requests, incidents, changes, and other operational workflows. Despite the assignment’s expanded title, iTop is a tool for managing IT services; it is not the ITIL library or framework.
How iTop works
At the center of iTop is a CMDB: a structured record of configuration items (CIs), such as servers, software, and application solutions, and the relationships between them. Instead of keeping that inventory separate from support work, teams can link configuration data to tickets and service processes. The iTop data-model documentation describes core objects as well as optional modules for areas such as end-user devices, virtualization, storage, and data centers. Available objects and modules can depend on the installation and its extensions.
This approach can help teams understand which services or other components may be affected by a change or incident. It does not automatically produce a complete or accurate inventory: the usefulness of the CMDB depends on the quality of its data, clear ownership, and ongoing maintenance.
What iTop can manage
The official iTop Hub describes requests, incidents, problems, changes, and a service catalog in one platform. The iTop project repository also lists service and contract management, configurable service-level agreements (SLAs), graphical impact analysis, CSV import, consistency audits, and data synchronization or federation.

- CMDB maintenance: Import data, check consistency, and synchronize or federate records with other sources.
- Impact analysis: Use the recorded relationships to examine potential effects across connected items.
These are capabilities described by the project and publisher, not guarantees of a particular result. Your team still needs to decide how to define processes, keep records current, and verify that the chosen configuration supports its requirements.
Customization, integrations, and extensions
Combodo presents iTop as customizable and integrable with other systems. The iTop extension store includes examples such as Ansible-driven CMDB updates, approval workflows, ticket assignment and handling, and cable management. Extensions have their own version requirements and compatibility conditions; check the current listing against the exact iTop version and package before relying on one. Catalog listings may also differ in whether an extension is free, premium, or included with a subscription.

Who should evaluate iTop?
iTop is worth evaluating if your service desk needs to connect tickets with infrastructure and service records, or if your operations team wants a configurable CMDB alongside service-management workflows. It may suit organizations that have the capacity to define their data model, establish data ownership, and maintain integrations and records over time.
Before choosing it, assess the following:
- Deployment: Decide whether SaaS or self-managed/on-premise hosting fits your organization and who will operate the system.
- Workflow fit: Confirm that the request, incident, problem, change, service catalog, and SLA processes match your actual needs.
- CMDB fit: Identify the objects and relationships you need, where data will come from, who owns it, and how accuracy will be maintained.
- Customization and integration: List required model changes and connections to other systems; check extension compatibility for your intended version.
- Adoption and support: Decide whether internal staff can implement and administer the platform or whether you need vendor support, consulting, or training.
Packages and deployment options
As presented on Combodo’s homepage on October 4, 2026, the publisher promotes iTop 3.3 and describes three packages. These are high-level publisher descriptions, not a complete entitlement or pricing schedule; verify current terms directly with Combodo.

Combodo also describes adjustable support levels, SaaS onboarding with a dedicated customer relationship manager, consultancy, and training in CMDB, ITSM, and customization. Organizations considering those services should confirm scope and commercial terms with the publisher. The homepage’s claim that iTop can “Cut IT costs by 20% while boosting efficiency” is a vendor marketing claim; the page does not provide a study, sample, or method supporting it as a general outcome.

Evaluate iTop against your required processes and operating model rather than its feature list alone. In a proof of concept, use representative configuration items and relationships, connect them to a realistic ticket workflow, and test the imports or synchronization sources you expect to use. Check how staff will maintain the records and whether required integrations are available and compatible with the selected version.
