That insulator is usually silicon dioxide, called the buried oxide (BOX). SOI describes the substrate architecture, not one specific transistor design.
What does silicon-on-insulator mean?
In a conventional bulk-silicon structure, device regions are formed in silicon connected to the wafer body. In SOI, the device silicon sits above an insulating layer, which separates it electrically from the silicon handle wafer beneath it. The usual layer order is:
- Device silicon: the thin crystalline layer in which devices are fabricated.
- Buried oxide (BOX): the insulating layer, commonly silicon dioxide (SiO₂).
- Handle wafer: the supporting substrate, typically silicon.
The insulating layer changes electrical coupling and parasitic capacitance paths compared with bulk silicon. It does not, by itself, specify a transistor’s design or guarantee a particular performance result. IEEE’s overview of SOI and Toshiba’s explanation of SOI isolation describe the distinction between this structure and conventional isolation.
How do FD-SOI and PD-SOI differ?
FD-SOI and PD-SOI name different device electrostatics, principally determined by the silicon body’s thickness and whether depletion spans it. They are not interchangeable labels or a ranking of which wafer is better.

| Device type | Silicon body and depletion |
|---|---|
| FD-SOI (fully depleted SOI) | The device silicon is sufficiently thin for the body to be depleted through its thickness under the relevant operating conditions. |
| PD-SOI (partially depleted SOI) | The device silicon is thicker, so depletion does not extend through the entire body. |
When comparing SOI implementations, consider the device-layer thickness and depletion regime, BOX design and handle-wafer properties, the application, and the device’s thermal and body behavior. These choices are tailored to the process; BYU’s substrate reference discusses SOI structures and fabrication, while Soitec describes different engineered substrate options in its product portfolio.
How is an SOI wafer made?
SOI is an engineered wafer structure that can be produced by more than one route. Common methods include:

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Bonding and thinning: bond wafers, then thin and polish one wafer to create the device-silicon layer above the insulator.
- SIMOX: implant oxygen into silicon and anneal it to form a buried oxide layer.
- Ion-implantation-assisted layer transfer: use implantation to define a split plane, then bond and transfer a thin silicon layer. Soitec describes its Smart Cut™ process this way: “Smart Cut™ technology is based on the combination of light ion implantation and molecular adhesion bonding to transfer ultrathin single crystal layers from one substrate to another.” (Soitec’s Smart Cut technology description.)
The route and resulting layer properties depend on the wafer and process requirements; SOI does not imply a single manufacturing recipe.
Why use SOI, and what are its trade-offs?
The BOX electrically separates device regions from the underlying substrate. Compared with bulk silicon, that can reduce certain parasitic electrical paths and substrate coupling. The consequences for a chip depend on its device design and manufacturing process, so there is no single speed or power improvement that applies to all SOI devices.

Some FD-SOI processes also support body-bias control, which can be used to dynamically control transistor behavior. STMicroelectronics describes body-biasing as a feature of its FD-SOI technology; it is a process capability, not a guarantee of a specific chip-level speed or power outcome (STMicroelectronics’ FD-SOI technology information).
The insulating layer also changes heat flow, and partially depleted devices can exhibit floating-body behavior. The significance of either effect depends on the architecture and implementation; neither should be assumed to affect every SOI device in the same way.

Where is SOI used?
SOI is used in multiple, distinct platform types rather than one universal kind of chip:
- RF-SOI: used in wireless connectivity and radio-frequency front ends, where substrate isolation is relevant to circuit design.
- FD-SOI logic: used in some smart-device and processor platforms, as well as automotive radar and RF or mmWave applications cited by substrate supplier Soitec.
- Photonics SOI: used for photonics and optical-networking substrates.
These are examples associated with particular SOI variants and supplier offerings, not a claim that every SOI wafer suits every application. STMicroelectronics also identifies automotive, industrial, and aerospace uses for a specific memory technology combining FD-SOI and embedded phase-change memory; that application statement applies to the described technology, not to SOI generally.
