Trace, FaceCheck.ID and Lenso document face-search APIs; PimEyes’ reviewed pages describe a consumer search and monitoring service, not an API. They differ in access, pricing, indexed material and data policies, and the available documentation does not establish a universal winner for accuracy or coverage. Treat results as leads to verify—not proof of someone’s identity.
What these services search—and what a result means
Face search compares facial features across images. Unlike conventional reverse-image search, which chiefly looks for copies or visually similar versions of the submitted image, face search may return a different photo of a similar-looking person. The two kinds of search answer different questions.
These services describe searching public or open-web material their systems can access or have indexed. That is not the whole internet: a search may miss private accounts, unindexed pages, excluded platforms or images that are otherwise inaccessible. Trace explicitly says an empty result means only that it found no match in the web it can reach.
A similarity score is not a probability that the person has been identified. Trace’s score bands, FaceCheck.ID’s match-quality score and PimEyes’ advertised accuracy figure are provider-defined or provider-reported; the reviewed materials do not establish a controlled, independent comparison among the four services. Check the source page and surrounding context, and seek corroboration before drawing conclusions. Do not make consequential decisions about someone based on a face-search result alone.

How the four services compare
| Service | What the reviewed documentation offers | Published pricing structure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trace | Browser search and a documented API | Credits: $4 for 5 or $50 for 100, per Trace materials accessed October 4, 2026; taxes may apply | One credit reveals one search; credits do not expire, and Trace says there is no subscription or monthly minimum. |
| FaceCheck.ID | Documented API; the reviewed API page describes three credits per search | $0.10 per credit, or $0.30 per API search, per FaceCheck.ID’s API page accessed October 4, 2026 | Its sample testing mode searches a limited scan and is explicitly not meaningful for evaluating results. |
| Lenso | People face-search category, subscriptions and a Developer Plan with API access | Dollar prices: not stated in the pricing-page text reviewed (Lenso, accessed October 4, 2026) | Check the live pricing display for current prices and allowances. |
| PimEyes | Consumer search, alerts and image-rights monitoring described on reviewed pages; no API documentation was established there | Subscription tiers; dollar prices: not stated in the homepage material reviewed (PimEyes, accessed October 4, 2026) | PimEyes says its search excludes social media and video platforms. |
These are not four interchangeable APIs. If integration into your own software is a requirement, the reviewed materials document API workflows for Trace, FaceCheck.ID and Lenso. PimEyes’ reviewed pages describe a paid consumer product; they do not establish an API suitable for an application. Confirm availability and terms directly with a provider before designing around a feature.
What each provider documents
Trace: asynchronous API, credits and external processing
Trace’s API uses bearer-token authentication. The documented flow is to upload an image as multipart form data, start an asynchronous scan, poll for completion and read result objects that can include a URL, platform or handle fields, and a similarity score. The documentation specifies JPEG, PNG or WebP images up to 8 MB, with a minimum 200-pixel short side. A scan typically takes 25–45 seconds; Trace says it may take up to 90 seconds.
Trace labels scores from 50 to 100, with bands beginning at 70 (“possible”), 80 (“strong”) and 90 (“near-certain”). Those are Trace’s labels for similarity scores, not identity probabilities. Its API documentation says, “It is not an identity service. A match is a similarity score between two images, not a statement about who someone is.”

Trace says it crops the face in the browser before upload. It also says its search can query public image engines and that roughly half of paid searches reach a commercial face-search service when Trace’s own result is thin. For external queries, Trace serves a cropped image at a signed URL for up to about ten minutes; it says it cannot control those other engines’ logs or caches.

According to Trace’s policy, last updated September 27, 2026, uploaded images and result previews are kept for 30 days so searches can be reopened, with immediate deletion available. Trace says its own index may retain measurements, a small face crop and the public page URL when a match is indexed; it offers removal and a permanent do-not-index list. These are provider statements, not an independent audit.
Trace’s terms, as summarized in its API documentation, prohibit background checks, hiring, lending, insurance, surveillance, law enforcement, searches involving minors, and using the service to identify, track or harass people. Trace says to search only images you have the right to use.

FaceCheck.ID: API search and a test-mode trap
FaceCheck.ID documents an API sequence that uploads an image to /api/upload_pic, returns an id_search, polls /api/search and retrieves JSON results. Its Swagger page identifies specification version 1.02 and lists upload, delete, information and search operations.
The sample code defaults to TESTING_MODE=True. FaceCheck.ID says this mode scans only 100,000 faces, costs no credits and “results won’t be meaningful.” It is a demonstration mode, not a basis for judging real-world accuracy.

It warns that lookalikes, low-quality photographs and obscured faces can mislead; it also says children’s photos may not be searched and that doing so violates its terms. The FAQ describes a removal route and says search history is deleted within 24 hours, submitted searches are not added to its database, and its index stores low-resolution thumbnails and links rather than original source photos. Lenso: broader image categories, face-search API
Lenso’s People category is for face search. Its other categories include Duplicates & Copyrights, Places, Similar and Related images, so the product is broader than face matching alone. The pricing page describes Starter and Professional subscriptions and a Developer Plan that combines API calls with search and alert allowances. Professional is described as including Research Mode, advanced filters and a larger result allowance.
Lenso’s API examples show bearer-token authentication and a face-search endpoint that accepts a base64-encoded image. The examples include sorting, page selection, domain filters and optional date bounds, with up to 20 results per page and request limits. Because these examples are in repository documentation, check Lenso’s live API guide for current parameters and limits before implementation.
PimEyes: consumer search, alerts and stated exclusions
PimEyes says it searches the open web and excludes social media and video platforms. Its consumer offering includes source information, alerts and image-rights monitoring. The homepage accessed October 4, 2026 lists Open Plus with up to 75 searches daily and 10 alerts; PROtect with up to 125 searches and 20 alerts; and Advanced with unlimited daily searches and 500 alerts. These are the homepage’s stated quotas, not a comparison of API limits.

The same homepage advertises “98% search accuracy” and “50M+ daily index updates.” PimEyes does not provide an evaluation method in the reviewed material, so these should be read as the company’s marketing claims, not independently validated or comparable performance figures. Its terms, dated July 31, 2026, prohibit unlawful or invasive uses including stalking and spying. Its tutorials describe opt-out or manual exclusion routes for removal from its search results; review current terms and privacy information before relying on them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by workload, not by headline claim
Before adopting a service, compare what you actually need to do. A browser search for an occasional query has different requirements from an application processing many images. Subscription quotas, credits and API allowances cannot be compared by headline price alone.
- Access: Decide whether you need a browser interface, an API or both. Confirm that the documented API supports your intended integration and volume.
- Coverage: Check which public-web sources are included or excluded. PimEyes’ stated exclusion of social media and video is especially relevant if those are the sources you expect to find.
- Workflow and limits: Review accepted image formats and sizes, asynchronous polling, page and request limits, filters, result counts and alert allowances. Treat test or demonstration modes separately from production search.
- Total cost: Estimate the number of searches you expect, account for recurring subscriptions versus credits, and check taxes and current quotas. A cheap first search may not be the lowest-cost option for sustained use.
- Data handling: Read the current policy for image retention, result storage, external processing, deletion and opt-out. Trace’s described external image-engine queries make this check particularly important.
- Permitted purpose and location: Read the provider’s terms and check local rules before searching. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction, and permission to upload an image is not the same as permission to use a result for any purpose.
Face images can be sensitive information. Be especially cautious when the image belongs to someone else: consider whether you have the right to submit it, whether the search is necessary, and how the provider and any downstream services may handle it. Policy descriptions are not independent audits, so they should not be treated as guarantees about actual data handling.
How to verify a possible match responsibly
- Open the original result page. Check that the page really contains the image and note its date, surrounding text and context. A result URL or platform label alone does not confirm that the person is who you think it is.
- Compare more than one image. Look for consistent facial features across different photos, while accounting for pose, lighting, image quality, age and occlusion. Similarity scoring can be affected by these differences.
- Seek independent corroboration. Use reliable contextual evidence rather than another unverified face-search result as confirmation. A lookalike or recycled image can produce a persuasive but wrong lead.
- Stop when the evidence is insufficient. Do not use a match as the sole basis for contacting, accusing, reporting or making a consequential decision about a person.
For privacy-related concerns, use the provider’s current deletion or exclusion process and check whether removal from that service also addresses any external source page. Removing a result from a search index does not necessarily remove the source image from the web.
