A wireless phone system uses radio for at least part of the connection between a handset and nearby phone or network equipment. The term does not specify how a call reaches its destination: it could describe a cordless handset connected to a phone line, a Wi-Fi or DECT phone using internet calling, or a wireless handset connected to a business phone system.

What “wireless phone system” means

“Wireless” describes the local connection, not necessarily the whole call. The handset communicates with a base, router, access point, or other nearby equipment over radio instead of being connected to that equipment by a wire. The call may then travel over a traditional telephone line or an IP network, depending on the system.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) defines wireless communication broadly as communication between nodes without wires, usually using radio frequencies. It defines Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) as voice transmission over IP networks. These are related but different ideas: wireless describes how devices connect locally, while VoIP describes how voice is carried over a network. CRTC glossary

Common types of wireless phone system

Cordless phone connected to a telephone line

A household cordless phone has one or more wireless handsets linked to a nearby base. The base connects to the telephone service; the handset does not need its own wired connection to the wall. This is often what people mean when they ask about a cordless phone system.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Wireless VoIP phone

A wireless VoIP phone uses a handset, cradle, and battery, with a built-in Wi-Fi or DECT transceiver to connect to a home or office network. The call is carried using VoIP over an IP network. ENERGY STAR distinguishes these wireless handsets from desktop wired VoIP phones and conference phones. ENERGY STAR: Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) Phones

Wireless handset connected to a business phone system

A business may use wireless handsets integrated with a private branch exchange (PBX), its private telephone system. This is a distinct arrangement from a household cordless phone or a standalone wireless VoIP handset. The architecture and equipment depend on the particular business system.

  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How wireless phone systems work

In each case, radio replaces a cable for at least one part of the connection: between a handset and its base, or between a phone and a nearby Wi-Fi access point. From there, the system routes the call through its telephone service or IP network. A phone can therefore be wireless at the handset while still relying on wired network equipment or a wired connection to the phone service.

Wi-Fi and DECT are two connection methods identified for wireless VoIP phones. A wireless VoIP handset depends on a nearby router or access point for its network connection. That coverage is not the same as mobile or cellular coverage, which comes from a cellular network. ENERGY STAR notes that wireless VoIP range is more limited than cellular coverage because it relies on nearby wireless routers or access points; it does not give a universal distance that applies to every setup.

Wireless phone system, cordless phone, and mobile phone compared

Type Wireless connection How it differs
Cordless phone system Handset to nearby base The base connects the handset to telephone service; the system is commonly used at home.
Wireless VoIP phone Phone to nearby Wi-Fi access point or DECT equipment Voice travels over an IP network; calling depends on the nearby network.
Wireless business handset Handset to equipment in a private phone system Part of an integrated business PBX arrangement.
Mobile or cellular phone Phone to a cellular network Uses cellular coverage rather than relying on a nearby home or office router for calls.

Does a wireless VoIP phone need Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily. The wireless VoIP phones described by ENERGY STAR can connect using Wi-Fi or DECT. The exact connection required depends on the phone and service. A Wi-Fi model needs a compatible nearby wireless network; a DECT model needs compatible DECT equipment or a base. Check the specific phone and VoIP service requirements before choosing one.

Choosing a home or small-office wireless handset

If you are shopping for a DECT cordless phone system, check that it works with your phone line or VoIP service, supports the number of handsets you need, and covers the space where you plan to use it. Compatibility and usable coverage vary by equipment and service; the term “wireless” alone does not establish either.

What the term does not tell you

  • Whether calls use a traditional telephone line, an IP network, or a cellular network.
  • The handset’s coverage distance or call quality.
  • Whether a specific phone works with a particular carrier, VoIP service, or PBX.
  • How many handsets the system supports.

Those details depend on the model, network, service, and installation. ENERGY STAR’s page lists a VoIP phone specification effective date of October 1, 2014; that date alone does not establish whether a newer specification exists, so check the current criteria before relying on a certification claim.
