Rust is attracting interest, but the available evidence does not show developers broadly abandoning Java, Python, or C++ for it—and it does not establish AI as the cause. Recent surveys and GitHub activity show Rust rising alongside strong growth in Python and TypeScript. They measure different things, though, and none tracks developers switching languages because of AI.

What the latest survey says about language use and interest

Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey asked respondents which languages they had used for extensive development in the previous year and which they wanted to use in the next. The question received 31,771 responses. Those answers can show reported use and future interest among respondents; they are not a count of workplace code, language market share, or people who stopped using one language and switched to another. Stack Overflow’s technology findings also distinguish “admired”—current users who want to continue using a technology—from “desired,” which captures interest in using it.

  • Reported use: Stack Overflow says Python use increased by 7 percentage points from 2024 to 2025; Rust and Go each increased by 2 points.
  • Admiration: Rust had a 72% admired score in the 2025 survey. This describes the share of current Rust users who want to continue with it, not Rust’s share of all developers or evidence of migration from other languages.
  • Interpretation: Stack Overflow connects growth in Python, Rust, and Go with their use in AI development and infrastructure. That is a plausible explanation for concurrent trends, not a causal finding that AI prompted developers to switch.

Stack Overflow summarizes one aspect of the appeal this way: “Python developers aspire to use Rust and Go as the path to high-performance systems programming.” That is the survey publisher’s characterization of reported interest, not proof that Python developers are abandoning Python.

GitHub activity shows Rust rising, but not alone

GitHub’s Octoverse reports activity on GitHub repositories and contributions; it is not a census of all developers or of code written at work. Its 2024 Octoverse said Python had overtaken JavaScript in GitHub usage and described Rust as also on the rise. Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Java remained among the platform’s widely used languages.

GitHub’s later figures make a Rust-only account of AI-related language growth harder to support. In its 2025 Octoverse, GitHub reported that TypeScript became its most-used language in August 2025, adding more than one million contributors during the year. It also reported about 850,000 new Python contributors, a 48.78% year-over-year increase. As of August 2025, nearly half of new AI projects on GitHub were primarily written in Python. Those measures have different populations and denominators from Stack Overflow’s survey, so they should not be combined into a single migration rate.

What AI may be changing—and what is not established

AI may affect how developers learn and the kinds of software they build, but those are different questions from whether AI makes them leave established languages for Rust. Stack Overflow reported that 44% of developers who learned a coding technique or language in 2025 used AI-enabled tools to do so, compared with 37% in 2024. This indicates a growing role for AI tools in learning; it does not say which language learners chose or whether an assistant caused that choice. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey overview does not establish a causal link between AI and migration to Rust.

It also matters what “AI” means in the claim. Rust may appeal to people working on high-performance systems, while Python is prominent in new AI projects on GitHub. A language used to build AI infrastructure is not necessarily one developers choose because they use AI coding assistants. The Rust Project’s 2025 State of Rust survey results discuss hiring trends and community concerns, but do not establish broad replacement of Java, Python, or C++.

So, are developers shunning Java, Python, and C++?

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Rust is gaining interest in some measures and is valued by many current users, particularly for systems programming. But the cited survey and platform figures do not show broad abandonment of Java, Python, or C++, and they do not identify AI as the cause of a shift to Rust. Python’s survey-reported use and GitHub activity grew over the periods cited, while TypeScript also became a major growth story on GitHub. These indicators describe separate samples and activity measures—not a direct count of developers changing languages.
