Actian Ingres is an enterprise relational database designed for transaction processing with operational analytics. Actian describes it as combining the Ingres Transactional Database with its Vector Analytics Database. It remains an actively documented product, but the available release signals do not establish whether version 12.1 is generally available or what its support lifecycle is. Check Actian’s current release documentation and customer portal before choosing a version.
What is Actian Ingres?
Ingres is an SQL relational database management system from Actian, aimed at enterprise applications. Actian positions it as an operational database that can also analyze operational data, rather than as a universal fit for every database workload. The product overview describes Ingres as combining its transactional database with Vector Analytics, and its datasheet characterizes the design as hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP). These are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings. Actian’s product overview and its Ingres datasheet provide the vendor’s product framing.
Actian’s 2024 datasheet describes row-based and columnar storage for transaction processing and operational analytics in one database. It also lists ACID compliance, multi-version concurrency control (MVCC), distributed database support, monitoring tools, semi-structured and unstructured data types, and geospatial types and functions. Security capabilities listed include access controls, dynamic data masking, column-level encryption and security auditing; high availability and disaster recovery are also described. Confirm the exact feature, platform and configuration support in documentation for the release you plan to use. Actian Ingres datasheet.
Ingres and OpenROAD
OpenROAD is a related Actian application-development tool, not a component required to make Ingres a database. Actian describes it as a database-centric, object-oriented 4GL for building mission-critical n-tier applications; it can connect to Ingres and other databases. Actian product overview.

Is Actian Ingres still supported, and what is the latest version?
Actian’s materials show ongoing product activity, but they do not settle the exact current generally available release or its support dates. The Actian launch index lists an announcement titled “Actian Ingres 12.1: Modern. Secure. Connected.” dated February 20, 2026. Meanwhile, the official documentation portal labels Ingres 12.0 “Latest.” A 12.1 licensing page, last modified September 11, 2026, confirms documentation activity, not general availability or support duration. Actian product-launch index; Ingres documentation portal; Ingres 12.1 licensing documentation.
For a production decision, ask Actian or check the Customer Portal for the release’s availability, lifecycle dates, supported platforms, patches and support entitlement. Do not infer those details from an announcement title or a documentation label.

How is Ingres licensed?
Ingres is distributed through Actian’s enterprise software channels, and the applicable agreement depends on the edition and deployment. Actian’s ESD page says enterprise editions are subject to a signed Actian software license agreement or the license included with the product. It does not publish public pricing. The page also offers evaluation editions after requesting a 30-day trial license key. Actian ESD.
For version 12.1, Actian’s licensing instructions require a valid license.xml file in a directory accessible to the installation. License generation is through the Actian Customer Portal; the installer displays information such as host name and core count for the generator. The guide says one valid file can be shared by installations on the same host when valid for the installed version. It also warns: “Failure to have a valid product license causes Actian Ingres to suspend processing.” Confirm license terms and file requirements with Actian for the specific release and intended deployment. Can Actian Ingres run in the cloud?
Yes. Actian’s modernization ebook describes running Ingres in cloud virtual machines and using cloud-enabled deployments built with containers and automation. The best approach depends on application requirements, resource constraints, desired scalability and isolation, and how much management flexibility the team needs. Actian says some migration paths can move Ingres to cloud without converting stored data or changing the database schema while applications transition; treat that as guidance for those paths, not a guarantee for every environment. Ingres documentation describes the Star Server as handling distributed requests: it receives client requests, passes data requests to local DBMS servers, then returns query results to applications. Star does not itself access databases directly; the local DBMS servers perform that work. Documentation also describes reaching non-Ingres databases through Enterprise Access products. Enterprise Access products, also called gateways, provide interfaces between Ingres applications and other database management systems. Actian documents their functions as translating OpenSQL into host query interfaces, converting Ingres and host-native data types, mapping host errors to Ingres errors, and presenting host databases in a way applications can use as if they were Ingres databases. Verify that the specific gateway, target database, release and platform combination is supported before designing around it. Ingres Enterprise Access documentation.
How to assess whether Ingres fits
Ingres is worth evaluating when an organization needs an enterprise transactional database and wants operational analytics in the same environment. A useful evaluation should test the actual application and deployment rather than rely on general product claims.
- Workload: Measure the balance of transaction processing and analytics, and determine whether row and columnar storage meet the application’s needs.
- Compatibility: Check application dependencies, operating-system support, drivers, and any required gateways against the documentation for the exact release.
- Operations: Validate licensing, monitoring, high availability, disaster recovery, security controls and support obligations in the intended configuration.
- Deployment economics: Compare on-premises and cloud costs, including management effort, isolation, compliance, data transfer and support.
- Evidence: Use representative workload tests and independently defined acceptance criteria. Actian’s 2024 datasheet reports a GigaOm TCP-H test in which X100 was “9x faster than alternate solutions,” but the cited material does not provide enough context to generalize that figure to other workloads, versions or competitors. Actian Ingres datasheet.
Actian’s datasheet also includes a customer testimonial from John Barron, CIO of Ireland’s Office of the Revenue Commissioners, describing Ingres as a scalable and performant database engine. That is a customer statement reproduced by the vendor, not independent comparative testing. Actian Ingres datasheet.
