CodeSmith’s central idea is that a coding agent needs more than a capable model: it needs rules, controls, and feedback that help it complete a multi-step engineering task reliably. In DogeKing’s account of CodeSmith v0.5.0, one small safeguard makes the case concrete: text that merely looks like a tool call is filtered rather than treated as proof that a tool ran.
Why a tool-call-shaped response can be misleading
A model can print text that resembles a command to a tool without actually invoking one. An actual invocation must arrive through the API’s tool channel; ordinary generated text is still just text. If an agent mistakes a printed imitation for a completed action, it may proceed as if it had received results that do not exist.
DogeKing’s DEV Community essay describes a guard in CodeSmith’s streaming engine at crates/agent-runtime/src/engine/streaming.rs. Its filter_tool_call_delta state machine watches for five opening markers—[TOOL_CALL], <codesmith:tool_call, <tool_call, <invoke , and <function_calls>—and their matching closing markers. Because streamed output can split a marker across chunks, the filter tracks state across deltas, strips the wrapper text, and sends a notice to the UI.
The notice reproduced in the essay reads: “Stripped non-API tool-call wrapper from model output (use the API tool channel).” Showing the intervention matters: the system does not silently pretend a tool ran, and the user is told that suspicious wrapper text was removed. The example and paths refer to CodeSmith’s stated v0.5.0 snapshot at commit 3a74c82f; they are not a guarantee of current behavior in later versions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What “harness” means in CodeSmith
The CodeSmith README describes the distinction this way: “A model answers a question; an agent finishes a task. CodeSmith is the harness in between.” In this essay, the harness is the layer that constrains and guides a model as it works through a task. The tool-call filter is one illustration: it helps keep the agent’s actions grounded in actual tool-channel events rather than model-generated lookalikes.
DogeKing’s account of the v0.5.0 snapshot points to several other parts of that layer:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- A written constitution and authority hierarchy: rules establish what takes precedence when instructions conflict; the essay describes nine levels of authority.
- Operating modes: Plan, Agent, and YOLO are presented as different ways to run the agent, rather than as properties of the underlying model.
- OS-level sandboxing: execution is constrained outside the model itself. The essay describes this as part of the snapshot’s design, not as proof of support on every operating system or in current releases.
- Per-turn side-git snapshots: the essay says the system creates a side-git snapshot each turn, providing a project-state mechanism alongside model interaction.
- Optional concurrent sub-agents: work can be delegated across agents, according to the essay’s description.
Together, these mechanisms frame agent reliability as a system-design problem. A model may produce a plausible answer, but task completion also depends on which instructions govern it, what it is permitted to do, how actions are verified, and what state is preserved as work proceeds.
CodeSmith’s project lineage and reported scale
DogeKing identifies CodeWhale, previously called deepseek-tui, as CodeSmith’s predecessor. The article describes a Rust workspace with 21 crates, including agent-runtime, tui, agent and providers, execpolicy, index, mcp, hooks, and extensions.

What the essay does—and does not—show about “cheap brains”
The title’s “cheap brains” framing points toward using inexpensive or open-source models with an agent harness, but DogeKing’s essay does not provide prices, controlled model comparisons, or benchmark results. It supports an architectural argument instead: guardrails, explicit authority rules, execution boundaries, state tracking, and feedback can shape how an agent uses a model. It does not establish that a particular low-cost model will match a more expensive one, or quantify savings from the approach.
For readers evaluating the idea, the useful distinction is between model capability and system behavior. The model supplies generated reasoning and text; the harness determines how instructions are prioritized, which actions count as real tool use, and what safeguards surround the work. The streaming filter illustrates one failure mode and one response, not a complete measure of agent safety.
